BBC: Hamas says its negotiators have opened a new round of talks aimed at ending the war in Gaza, hours after Israel launched a major offensive.

Taher al-Nounou, an adviser to the head of Hamas, told the BBC a new round of negotiations had officially begun in Doha on Saturday. There were no preconditions from either side, and all issues were on the table for discussion.

Israel Katz, the Israeli defence minister, said Hamas negotiators were returning to indirect talks in Qatar to seek a deal on the hostages.
Katz called the move a "departure from the recalcitrant position they had taken up until that moment".

It came after Israel's military said on its Hebrew X account that troops had been mobilised for "Operation Gideon's Chariots" to seize "strategic areas" of Gaza and free hostages.

I believe so too, the current extremist government in Israel is not representative of Israelis and is doing enormous damage to Israels legitimacy and reputation worldwide

Netanyahu will likely be voted out at the next election. Hope they get a more moderate leader next time.

I hope so too, I don't see a future for Israel under the current leadership unfortunately. It's not reported in the West, the deep divisions in Israel are huge and growing, Israel either learns to live with its neighbours or perishes 🙏

I don’t see how Israel could live with a neighbour that plans & executes a massacre against its citizens & then joyfully celebrates it.

But once Hamas are out of the picture as per the new deal apparently being negotiated, maybe then Israel can live with its neighbours.

"Israel either learns to live with its neighbours or perishes "

Israel wouldn't perish, its military and its allies would ensure that it didn't.
There is absolutely no chance of Israel not existing.
But what it could expect, is to be in eternal conflict.

So it has to start bargaining with the Palestinians who have already said, in return for peace, they will accept Israel behind 67 borders.

I think it's position is more perilous than that, Israels only meaningful ally is the US and it is completely reliant on the US for survival. It recieves billions in economic and military aid each year from the US without which it absolutely would fail.

Support for Israel amongst Americans is dropping off a cliff, particularly amongst young Americans who have an overwhelmingly unfavourable opinion of Israel. If this trend continues will American support also continue?

It's two sided situation though. A few months ago a young Palestinian was taken to hospital with injuries related to rape and sexual assault. The medical staff reported it to the police, the injuries were horrific, and the soldiers accused were arrested. An Israeli crowd stormed the prison and released them.
Israels Channel 9 ran a poll asking the publics opinion, the majority believed the IDF should be allowed to rape and sexually assault Palestinians without fear of arrest. There's a great deal of hate on both sides.

Not doubting that there is a great deal of hate on both sides.

The two just cannot live alongside each other peacefully, that has been proven over and over again.

I don't see a two state solution as feasible for that reason (though it should be the solution in an ideal world).

I believe if you take away the root causes of the conflict with a two state solution the feelings will ease with each passing generation.
The main problem for Israel is the damage being done to its reputation and the growing ill feeling worldwide. Go outside of the West and the feeling towards Israel is overwhelmingly hostile. I recently spent a couple of months in China, that was eye opening

Well I don't think China have any right to judge other countries on human rights.

I'm sure the international reputation of Israel has been damaged by this war. At first it was enhanced, now it is damaged as the war continues. They were the perceived underdog on October 7th 2023, now they are the aggressor.

However, I don't believe you can take away the root causes of the conflict, it goes back so far into history and is so convoluted with both sides claiming moral supremacy. Each generation seems to pass on the distrust of the other side to the next generation.

Hope to be proved wrong & a way for them to peacefully co-exist can be found when Gaza is redeveloped, however.
