Conflict in the Middle East

The worst humanitarian crisis and people displacement

Sudan.

Barely on the news. Channel 4 currently is discussing the worst humanitarian crisis currently ( its NOT occurring in Gaza). People are actually REALLY starving and eating rats and leaves from the trees.

No marches, no flag waving, no slogans, no student interest, no protest on campus, no symbol wearing. We all know exactly why. No interest at all.

Why did you say we all know why?
What did you mean by that?

In your OP you said Sudan doesn't get enough attention and we all know why. What is the reason that you think we all know why it doesn't?

ImmediateReaction · 10/03/2025 22:30

The ongoing conflict in Sudan, now approaching its second year, has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with more than 30 million people in need of assistance—the highest number ever recorded.

You don’t think Sudan deserves some attention?

You really think it's not obvious what the OP was doing? It's pretty obvious that this thread wasn't started out of genuine concern for Sudan but rather to compare the public attention between the conflict in Sudan and Israel/Palestine.

ImmediateReaction · 10/03/2025 22:32

Thank you for private messages, I agree I will ignore.

Sudan has been largely ignored by the mainstream media you are correct there but I don't fully understand the link you're trying to make with Palestine. You haven't really said anything about the Sundanese conflict in its own right, only in relation to Gaza and I'm not sure I understand the subtext you're hinting at.

The people I mix with are horrified by what's been happening in Sudan however I do appreciate that Gaza has been a much bigger discussion point and there are many in the U.K. who don't even know about it. In terms of protesting, my understanding was people were protesting because the UK has provided extensive military support to Isreal - I don't particularly want my tax money being used to kill kids. Whereas the UK's role in Sudan is more that britain's colonial policy was pretty crap and left Sudan unstable but that was along time ago so and we're sending aid now so there's not really too much to protest about unless you want to protest something we've already done (as opposed to something we're continuing to do). What would you like to see people doing?

I have genuine concern for Sudan and also struggle to understand why its largely ignored. Both points are possible, even if not to others.

I see what some posters are trying to do.

Why are people protesting in Ireland then?

The Irish have always had an affinity with the Palestinians.

I don’t think the point being made is that people can’t be appalled by the horrors in Sudan as well as by war in Gaza.

I think it’s that endless marching, campaigning, protesting and - in its own little way - thread upon thread on here, all about Gaza, rather than Sudan, shows where people think their efforts should go.

So the question becomes what the defining factor is behind vehement, continuous protest against Israel and not against some other country or movement or conflict.

Partly yes. Thank you.

Why are people protesting in Ireland then?

Asks have mainly pressured the government to say more and do more so have largely been successful I guess esp recognition of Palestine. A big ask would be to sign off the bill that makes trading with the occupied territories illegal - which has not yet been successful.

Smaller asks of activists have targeted companies that would be trading with the occupied territories. Trinity students for example had a large and successful protest that asked that the university stop investing in companies that had operations in the occupied territories.

That’s fine . But There should be space to think about Sudan as well…

ImmediateReaction · 10/03/2025 22:49

Suggests it's also about how Africa is presented, its viewed differently.

It isn't.

I would have thought someone who supposedly cares about Sudan would be aware of the marches that have been held. If you’re in the UK there have been marches, there have also been joint marches for Sudan and Gaza in London, three of which we saw when we lived in London.

TY78910 · 10/03/2025 22:51

Whatsinanamehey · 10/03/2025 20:11

This reads to me that you don't actually care about Sudan, you just posted about it to make a point about your views on the Palestine/Israel conflict which is quite tragic.

If you really cared about Sudan you could have made a thread just about Sudan.

Yea… and the news is full of the crisis in Ukraine but no mention of that in the OP. Wonder why only Gaza was singled out here.

I think this is what I don't understand about the thread. Surely it's that the U.K. government is actively supporting Isreal so there's is something concrete to protest or march against. There is a munitions factory near me that is frequently a site for protests because it sends weapons to Isreal - it does not send them to Sudan. However I feel like something else is being alluded to here but nobody will actually clarify what it is.

Absolutely. You asked a question & I answered it

If @ImmediateReaction wabts to specifically know why Gaza gets more media attention than Sudan then I think it’s because of the western powers involvement as well as all the other reasons that I mentioned. Ukraine also gets a lot of media attention.

It’s also has been a very media “friendly” conflict with the situation constantly evolving so always something new to report on. So often with conflicts you get huge amounts of coverage at the beginning but if the fighting continues with no new developments then it goes into a hum in the background, I think we saw this with Ukraine after a while then bang all back at the top of our newsfeed after Trump,

The threads on here are generated by conflict. That’s what keeps them going.

I think we all agree that what’s happening to people in Sudan is a genocide.
