Conflict in the Middle East

What would the 'support for Israel' equivalent of wearing a Keffiyeh be?

Although the Keffiyeh is a traditional Bedouin headdress it now largely indicates support for Palestine. I've noticed women wearing them in Zoom meetings and would like to find a way to reciprocate with my own clothing statement.

Crikey between this and the coffee date I'm surprised how many fervent pro Palestinians you are surrounded by.

It's not that surprising, I work at a university on the West Coast, did you not see news reports of pro-Palestinian encampments at US universities?

Please see my previous update, "There's also a sense that certain 'personal beliefs' are more acceptable than others. So wearing a Keffiyeh may be more acceptable than wearing a yellow ribbon and displaying rainbow flags is acceptable whereas if I displayed an XX flag (if there was such a thing) it would be seen as being in opposition to the rainbow brigade and therefore unacceptable."

It's tricky, I don't want to get in hot water at work for making an 'unacceptable' political statement through my clothing.

I think a yellow ribbon might be the safest thing you could wear. It's very clear support for the hostages and I don't think could easily be read as support for an aggresser.

Ohhh I remember seeing a thread somewhere else with a similar background. Was that when you were unsure to carry on a friendship with someone for calling it a genocide?
Or was that someone else, can't remember.

Aaah it's that poster, right OP I see you now.

Your colleagues are very brave to be wearing them so considering the way the protests were broken up in those universities such a heavy handed manner

You should tell them about your new friends group in case they would like to attend.

Yep, that was me! She & I have met up again several times since and it turns out we have plenty of other things to talk about, so this issue hasn't come up again.

There was nothing heavy handed about the ending of the protests here. An agreement between the protesters and the university was miraculously reached last summer, just before graduation, when they'd all go home anyway, and they haven't been back.

The pro Palestinian group your new friend you spoke about invited you too that you didn't know how you would turn down.

Look, you do you, but there is clearly an agenda with these threads to whip up a pile on about social media junkies just hopping on the next bandwagon.

Oh that, well I told her I couldn't come to the meeting and we're meeting for a coffee on Friday.

I don't know why you've got a hair up your ass about my posts, hey, but you do you.

Because these are life and death issues for Palestinians and Israelis not something that we can just use as fodder to start a pile on and to bandy about the same words and phrases.

Your president has just earmarked Gaza as his next rich person's playground due to the weather and the beach.
I think that is probably a much bigger issue at the moment.

Of course there are bigger issues, go start a thread on one you feel deserves attention.
Meanwhile, I didn't vote for the orange tyrant.

I find your post highly offensive.

Whatsinanamehey · 22/01/2025 18:27

I wear my keffiyah with pride and I will continue to do so in public. It's no less offensive than wearing a yellow ribbon or a sudra.
I hope you can see what an extreme position it is to call it what you have.

Whatsinanamehey · 22/01/2025 18:35

It feels like the hate towards the keffiyah and those who wear it, to show solidarity with the Palestinians, is another form of demonising pro-Palestinian voices.

Whatsinanamehey · 22/01/2025 18:11

I find your post highly offensive.

I have expressed my experiences and opinion, as have you.

Keep wearing yours with pride then.
I find hoards of people with keffiyas chanting about killing people in London highly offensive and in no way comparable to people wearing ribbons to represent the release of innocent hostages. That is offensive.

Whatsinanamehey · 22/01/2025 19:07

Well, clearly we disagree.

Inauthentic · 22/01/2025 19:23

Cultural symbols like the keffiyeh can spark such strong reactions. I think it's worth reflecting on why people choose to wear these symbols and what they mean to them. I think many people see them as expressions of solidarity, others may wear it for different reasons.

For this reason, I believe people should avoid wearing such symbols in a professional setting.

It’s unfortunate that the keffiyeh is often interpreted solely as an antisemitic statement or an attack on Jews.
Many people fail to distinguish between solidarity for victims of war crime and prejudice against a people or religion.

I also believe that conflating these issues is convenient for some as it can be used to stifle dialogue and criticism.

I don't feel any hate towards people wearing the Keffiyeh, but I don't think it's appropriate in a work setting and would like to have some way to respond in kind.

After this thread I think the yellow ribbon is probably the way to go, but I'd honestly rather people left their politics at home when they came to work.

I agree but why respond in kind why not just address in with HR?

Inauthentic · 22/01/2025 19:52

Are your colleagues aware that you are Jewish?

It wasn’t until I read posts on Mumsnet that I realised how offensive the keffiyeh can be to Jewish people. I now understand that it can be perceived as antisemitic and as a personal attack on all Jewish people - although it's often not the case at all.
