Can Hamas remain in charge?

So we have a ceasefire but will it last with Hamas remaining in charge of Gaza? There may be attempts for more moderate governance such as the. PA to take over but will they succeed?

The problem with Hamas still existing as a governing power is that Gaza may not attract international. investment for reconstruction and surely that is required for the Palestinian people to live reasonable lives?

More worryingly is that Hamas still has a great deal of support in Gaza and I think the media has glossed over the Palestinians who still feel the war needs to continue and Hamas represent some kind of righteous cause (which is bizarre). The media have had plenty of quotes from Palestinains wanting peace but for balance I think there should be acknowledgment there will be many who wish revenge on Israel and there is still the latent possibility of another October 7th st some point. As Blinken pointed out there are more Hamas fighters now than at the start and this does indicate there is a section of Paelstinain society who at heart out their hatred of Israelis above a lasting prosperous peace.

Many released today were held for minor offences and even many held without any charge at all under administrative detention.

Those released today include 69 women — including one minor — eight male minors, and 12 men sentenced for relatively minor offenses

Minor offences like 'attempted murder by stabbing'.

Not minor offences like 'dancing at a festival whilst Jewish'

Or no known offence at all

Palestinian teacher and activist Hadeel Shatara had been held without charge for seven months by Israel in administrative detention.
"There's no case against me. There's a secret file against me so I really don’t know what I did," she told Sky News.
"So they put you for a renewable six months, telling you that there's a secret file against you, we cannot tell you what you did but you’re going to stay behind bars," she said she was told.

Whatsinanamehey · 20/01/2025 08:57

Hadeel was released yesterday after being held for seven months without even being told why. Why is Israel allowed to do that? Why should she not be freed?

Well the majority of Palestinians released last night were women and children. A quick google would have told you that.

Perhaps read my update, I was talking phase 1. The around a 1000 wanted for 33. Not the token release on day 1 to look good to simpering westerners. The ones they really want, the list of murderers and hamas. THOSE.

Women and 15-18 year olds can also be terrorists and murderers.

Of course they can, but if you had taken the time to find out why they had been detained, you would have know they had committed minor offences.
But according to you and others, every single Palestinian detainee is a terrorist and a murderer.

Whatsinanamehey · 20/01/2025 09:15

It is extremely rare that Israel holds any Jewish citizens in administrative detention. The few that were held for violent crimes against Palestinians were all released before the ceasefire by Israel just because they can and as a 'gift' to Smotrich.

Yet, I don't see anyone complaining about that, if you care sooo much about violent offenders being released. Where's your criticism for that?

Where's your criticism that most Jewish settler terrorists who attack and set fire to Palestinians, their homes and property are never even arrested let alone detained?

No one said every single one.

I merely suggested perhaps the 1000 or so releases in exchange for 33 hostages might all be detainees rather than include murderers and hamas on their list of wants.

I guess that's not a consideration in moving forward, which rather suggests that hamas won't move forward and will be back to business as usual ASAP.

Pebblesonthebeach40 · 20/01/2025 09:22

"While a number of those due for release have been held on remand without charge, some are also serving multiple life sentences for murders or terror attacks."

Netanyahu will be back in business too. After all, he has been vocal in expressing this.
His goal of getting rid of Hamas has evidently failed. 15 months down the line and what has been achieved?

Pebblesonthebeach40 · 20/01/2025 09:24

Watching the TV this morning you'd be led to believe that the 1000 or so due for release are all stone throwing children 😂🤣

There were multiple terror attacks carried out by Israeli terrorists all through out the night on Palestinian villages. Some were even firebombed. How many of these Israeli terrorists were detained for their terror do you think?

3 innocent girls for 90 terrorists. What does that say?!

Reuters says that most of those released yesterday were not tried or convicted of any crime.

missdeamenor · 20/01/2025 10:58

SharonEllis: 'I think its really, really strange that people that style themselves pro-Palestinian are so incurious about how Hamas treats their own people.' You've made some brilliant points Sharon.

I pray that Palestinians will be brave enough to rise up and see them for what they are. Have watched many documentaries, and it's so sad to see little children saying they want to be martyrs when they grow up.

What was deemed most important to the people of gaza..... the release of terrorists and murderers. That will help ensure peace in the future 🤣

Rubbish. What was most important for the people of Gaza was stopping the genocide.

It's an agonising choice for Israel who both desperately want the return of the hostages and also know that releasing murderers will result in more civilian deaths. It's truly a devil's bargain.

In contrast to Hamas, who have nothing to lose but ill-gotten leverage, and choose murderers over anything which would help Palestinians.

Yes, I think Israel has been pressured into a very hard choice. They are desperate to get the innocent prisoners back but can't want to release terrorists in return and so many of them.

That Hamas are scum, and that they'll never stop until Israel are allowed to eradicate them completely.

And before anyone asks "eradicate them completely" means wiping out every last one.

Hamas are dreadful. But truth is still important. It wasn't 3 innocent girls for 90 terrorists.

I struggle with that line, and have heard it over the last few days in interviews with citizens

It’s a fearful ideology and a damaging one. We seem to be normalising it by amplifying it via the BBC reporting

This pressure isn’t due to hostages though I don’t think, it’s due to Trump.

My question is what will Hamas do?

What power will they hold if any, and how will they interact with new governance?

gloriagloria · 20/01/2025 11:58

@missdeamenor it's not lack of bravery in the Palestinian people - they've shown that is spades over the last 15 months. I have friends in Gaza who have had their home destroyed, been displaced seven times and seen sights no-one should see, but they continue working as health care providers - that's bravery. The barrier is lack of hope or a realistic option for peace. At the moment what do the people of Gaza have? Most have no homes, no infrastructure many dead and no plans for self-determination in the future or even rebuilding what they've lost. And those in the West Bank are rapidly their security and livelihoods to violent settlers. This requires political pressure and support from the International community and neighbouring countries and an Israeli Government prepared to accept compromise as well as the will of the Palestinian people.

And yes, @Menstrualcycledisplayteam , Hamas are undoubtedly scum, but they cannot be eradicated by military might. It needs a political solution. No-one will ever say this is easy or quick, but this is the only hope.

I think that what will have been achieved will be getting those innocent hostages back. Hamas could have released them earlier and saved many thousands of Palestine lives.

stomachamelon · 20/01/2025 12:25

@Auvergne63 I think it's reflective of a lot when you say that in light of the fact that hostages were released yesterday......

Also I am aware of who was released yesterday including the rapists and murderers. There are some seriously nasty people on that list. I will reserve judgement as to what happens next. Let's see if they return to their old lives? Whatever shape that may take.....

Follow the conversation. We ate talking about which prisoners or detainees are better released for the people of Gaza. Terrorists and murderers in the 1000 or do or detainees?
