Can Hamas remain in charge?

So we have a ceasefire but will it last with Hamas remaining in charge of Gaza? There may be attempts for more moderate governance such as the. PA to take over but will they succeed?

The problem with Hamas still existing as a governing power is that Gaza may not attract international. investment for reconstruction and surely that is required for the Palestinian people to live reasonable lives?

More worryingly is that Hamas still has a great deal of support in Gaza and I think the media has glossed over the Palestinians who still feel the war needs to continue and Hamas represent some kind of righteous cause (which is bizarre). The media have had plenty of quotes from Palestinains wanting peace but for balance I think there should be acknowledgment there will be many who wish revenge on Israel and there is still the latent possibility of another October 7th st some point. As Blinken pointed out there are more Hamas fighters now than at the start and this does indicate there is a section of Paelstinain society who at heart out their hatred of Israelis above a lasting prosperous peace.

I don't really understand why dozens of Hamas prisoners have to be released for each single Israeli prisoner. Does anyone know why this is?

Because there are a lot more Hamas prisoners than Israeli ones.

So they can reform and keep striking Israel.

Notice now there is a ceasefire the Hamas uniforms are back on, giving it large in Gaza no longer hiding in civilian clothes behind women and children. They won't stop in their desire to eradicate Israel. Israel know that.

Politics always comes down to what you most want/need, powered by what you physically can and can't do. To imagine that there is some kind of natural balance is naive.

mollyfolk · 20/01/2025 06:43

@Usou

*hey could just obliterate the place, and who would blame them watching well-fed Hamas operatives "giving it large" at the hostage exchange today.

This is, after all, what Hamas, Hezbollah, IJ and various other actors want to do to Israel.*

By "obliterate" do you mean killing or moving most Palestinians out of Gaza?

Or what do you mean exactly? How can you eradicate Hamas without committing a genocide?

There are some hamas being released. They don't ask for low ranking detainees but murderers ready to go.off again in their continued hatred. They could take this opportunity to rebuild gaza, get masses of aid in and look to a better future. Its unlikely though. More corruption, money sent off to Qatari bank accounts of hamas leaders and using the suffering of the people for their own aims (again).

stomachamelon · 20/01/2025 07:00

@Thornybush that's such a naive answer and not a reflection at all of the reality. After Shallit Hamas know exactly what they can get per hostage and what a commodity they are.

stomachamelon · 20/01/2025 07:02

@Pebblesonthebeach40 you would wonder why exactly they would want murderers of multiple people, bombers and rapists back. Around their women and children. Men who have committed multiple crimes. Terrorists.

Why not ask Back for all the people I hear about on here that are being held in detention unlawfully? The innocent? The children and women.

Strange.

What does it mean then?

It is strange. Different mindset to the thinking of people who seek peace.

It's obvious why, to continue with more of the same, continue in hatred of Israel and aims to wipe out. Otherwise why would you want terrorists released in exchange for hostages rather than detainees.

What was deemed most important to the people of gaza..... the release of terrorists and murderers. That will help ensure peace in the future 🤣

They've already obliterated the place! And still haven't eradicated Hamas, surely nobody is that naive to believe if the IDF go in much much harder they'll definitely see an end to Hamas, not gonna happen

What is it you’re after? What is it you’re hoping for wrt Hamas

According to a list provided by the Palestinian Authority's Commission for Prisoners' Affairs, all of those released are women or teens, the youngest 15. Israel detained them for what it said were offenses related to Israel's security, from throwing stones to more serious accusations like attempted murder.

Phase One

In this first stage, 33 hostages are to be set free over the course of six weeks.

These include all women (including female soldiers), children and men over the age of 50.

In return for the release of the hostages, Israel will free between 990 and 1,650 Palestinian prisoners and detainees.

I was talking about the list of phase 1 prisoners. Not the first few to look good on day 1, for the simpering western hating followers, the ones they want in phase 1 in the 1000 or so. Could ask for a 1000 detainees but the ultimate aim is the release of the more 'important ' ones to their cause.

Remember the release of Sinwar in a previous prisoner release. I wonder why they wanted him back.... 🤔 round and around

Liv999 · 20/01/2025 07:59

@EasternStandard I'm not "after" anything, I'm simply stating Israel have not achieved what they've set out to do, yet someone has already stated that well it didn't work out for them this time, but they can always obliterate the place next time round, one day into a ceasefire! Pretty vile talk

statsfun · 20/01/2025 08:05

It's an agonising choice for Israel who both desperately want the return of the hostages and also know that releasing murderers will result in more civilian deaths. It's truly a devil's bargain.

In contrast to Hamas, who have nothing to lose but ill-gotten leverage, and choose murderers over anything which would help Palestinians.

ParsnipPuree · 20/01/2025 08:21

3 innocent girls for 90 terrorists. What does that say?!

missdeamenor · 20/01/2025 08:22

SharonEllis · 18/01/2025 07:16

No Hamas cant remain in charge, obviously. They are a terrorist organisation committed to the destruction of Israel. They have also proved themselves to be completely incompetent as a government for the people of Gaza not only because their overriding interest is to obliterate Israel but because they are religious extremists with no concern for human rights.

Agree 100%. Hamas is a death cult sponsored by Iran and Qatar. The billions received have been used to buy weapons instead of improving the lives of Palestinians. They kill anyone that opposes them.

It would be so hard

Any rejoicing for and with Hamas is part of that. I feel for citizens who are scared

Hamas likely are as they were but the US reaction if they acted again may well be even more difficult

I think its worse than that, Hamas want their activists and commanders back so they can keep control of the gazan population & keep them riled up. Prison stories are great propaganda. I think its really, really strange that people that style themselves pro-Palestinian are so incurious about how Hamas treats their own people. Any mention of radicalisation and we get massive indignation, for example. If you cared about Palestinians wouldn't you be horrified at the indoctrination of young people?

I think it says that power and choices are complex. That many 'mights' and 'maybes' have to be balanced, and there are no easy answers.

Well the majority of Palestinians released last night were women and children. A quick google would have told you that.

Women and 15-18 year olds can also be terrorists and murderers.

Women and 15-18 year olds can also be terrorists and murderers.

Many released today were held for minor offences and even many held without any charge at all under administrative detention.

Those released today include 69 women — including one minor — eight male minors, and 12 men sentenced for relatively minor offenses

Dulra · 20/01/2025 08:53

In answer to the threads question, no I don't think Hamas should remain in charge. They are not good for Gaza or the region as a whole and they are a proscribed terrorist organisation and act as one. I also don't think they can be bombed out of existence and Blinkens warning that they have grown is very concerning. The long-term game needs to be played here and a viable alternative option needs to be developed for people living in Gaza that will ensure their safety and prosperity. The last 15 months has been an unequivocal disaster for Gaza and Israel nothing has been achieved that can even begin to look at, never mind implement, any sort of "regime" change. There is no plan. The rebuilding of Gaza and its people needs to take priority above all else. There needs to be some serious negotiations and I don't know stability, peace, future talks whatever they need to be called, with Hamas and international representatives that will have the expertise, clout and leverage to try and work with and convince Hamas to back off from their control over Gaza and give the region a chance. This all sounds whimsical I know but force will not achieve anything.
