Ireland, realising that the war in Gaza does not constitute a genocide, has applied to the ICJ to change the definition
They have asked for the definition to be broadened in light of the deaths caused by Israel who claim they were targeting Hamas but have killed 45,000 people, 17,000 of whom were innocent children.

Why is Israel closing it’s embassy in Ireland?

Ireland, realising that the war in Gaza does not constitute a genocide, has applied to the ICJ to change the definition (much like the recent Amnesty report changed the definition to declare the war a genocide).

This is why.

This is the classic definition of antisemitism.

If you have an international definition of what constitutes genocide and seek to change that definition for the Jewish state, that is antisemitism.

Yet they haven't closed the South African or Spanish embassies so is it only antisemitism when certain countries are at fault?

Is Myanmar also a Jewish state?

Broadening in this instance means changing.

To change the definition exclusively for the Jewish state is antisemitism.

Irelands decision to intervene in South Africas case:
“By legally intervening in South Africa’s case, Ireland will be asking the ICJ to broaden its interpretation of what constitutes the commission of genocide by a state.
“We are concerned that a very narrow interpretation of what constitutes genocide leads to a culture of impunity in which the protection of civilians is minimised.
“Ireland’s view of the convention is broader and prioritises the protection of civilian life – as a committed supporter of the convention, the government will promote that interpretation in its intervention in this case.”

JaneJeffer · 16/12/2024 14:33

Broadening in this instance means changing.
It doesn't. The definition would not change. They want clarification on intent.

Alwayslookonthe · 16/12/2024 14:36

If you’re interested in why Ireland is so weirdly, unreasonably antisemitic and antiIsrael, here is some of the answer....

Broaden means to widen ie include more definition which would mean the definition would change.

Written by Simon Sebag Montefiore. His family were in Ireland and were on the receiving end of the Limerick pogrom at the beginning of the 20th century.

Alwayslookonthe · 16/12/2024 14:47

Unbelievably, (or perhaps not so) Ireland’s president also sent condolences to Germany’s representative in Dublin on Hitlers death!

You need to start getting your news from places other than twitter. You have spread misinformation here that has the potential to stir up hatred. If you start reading the news from trusted sources it will help you understand issues and prevent you from being part of the problem.

JaneJeffer · 16/12/2024 14:50

There's a real problem with anti-Irish sentiment on Mumsnet which needs to be dealt with.

Unfortunately, not misinformation. Simon Sebag Montefiore is a reputable historian. He wrote an incredible book on the history of Jerusalem. His family also ended up in Ireland and were subject to the Limerick pogrom. He is a very good source.

I don't believe Ireland has done anything wrong in this instance, however Israel's reaction was predictable. Their actions and reactions are the main source of their isolation on the world stage, which is increasing day by day.

Yes and it has been widely discussed and debated and criticised in Ireland and already discussed many times on these threads. You have clearly just googled Ireland and antisemitism and throwing out everything you have got.

I am not sure why you think highlighting the mistakes of a politician dead almost 50 years is relevant to the Ireland of today when the current Israeli prime minister has a warrant out for his arrest for crimes against humanity.

Edited

Broadening the definition means to widen ie. to include more in the definition which would essentially CHANGE the definition, because it wouldn’t be the original definition.

An historian discussing a pogrom from 120 years ago. Why is this relevant?
