Israel has declared UNRWA a terrorist organisation

Israel has banned the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA from operating in the country - a move which could hamper its work in Gaza.

UNRWA's chief Philippe Lazzarini has warned the ban "will only deepen the suffering of Palestinians, especially in Gaza".

The new laws passed in the Knesset on Monday banned the agency from having any ties to Israeli officials and stripped its staff of their legal immunities.

The Israeli parliament also declared the group a terror organisation.

Seems like the final phase of the genocide is being forced through. If the UN are hampered there's no way of substantially delivering essential aid. If the organisation is accused of being terrorist then there's no protection against the IDF.

I can't believe this. There's no doubt about their intentions re the genocide of Gazans.

Do we know how it will work in practice?

sprigatito · 28/10/2024 22:28

It was inevitable. They've already murdered all the journalists. They've cut off communications in northern Gaza and attacked the peacekeepers in Lebanon. They don't want witnesses.

Catatonican · 28/10/2024 22:33

And still they are not sanctioned.

PaminaMozart · 28/10/2024 22:39

The whole world can see what is happening and all the governments that could put pressure on Israel are simply standing by.

Kakeandkake · 28/10/2024 22:40

It was only a matter of time, the final nail In the coffin of Israel's genocide of the Palestinians. There is nobody of sound mind who can deny it now and the Netanyahu government have openly shown the world who they are, it's gotten so out of hand that even Germany opposes it!

Oodiks · 28/10/2024 22:47

Perhaps the UNHCR could step in.

What would UNHCR do different to what URNWA is doing? I can see Israel killing then , accusing them of being terroritsts and vetting them

New personnel on the ground without ties to Hamas would be a good start.

Kakeandkake · 28/10/2024 22:55

There is no denying Israel's agenda to inflict as much pain on the Palestinians as possible. Shame on them and all those who support the fascist Israeli government.

HRTQueen · 28/10/2024 22:57

I am not shocked by this

With just over a week until the US election Isreal is doing just as they please as Biden can’t do anything and will say little and what the Israeli government want to do is to make the people of Gaza suffer not just Hamas they do not see them as human

a year ago we could never of believed Isreal would have gone so far with powerful governments just sitting back and making the repetitive comments about cease fire and two state solution

its beyond shameful

New personnel? Where do they come from? There's over 30,000 working at UNWRA are you suggesting they replace them all? In the middle of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza? oh and they'll have to be vetted by Isreal as current UNWRA employees are, how long will that take??
Yeah that will be a good start. Good start for who?

Exactly. It's no coincidence Israel have chosen the moment they have created a humanitarian crisis to do this. They know as does everyone else that getting any other organisation to step in at this point is impossible.

Well they wouldn't have a vested monetary interest in keeping Palestinians perpetual refugees. They hopefully wouldn't have terrorist employees which would be a start. The hateful curriculum could be removed from schools. UNRWA have done a lot of harm and made peace harder.

Without them thousands of Gazans will die.

Aid workers without ties to hamas have been killed in the last year. A good start would be not to kill aid workers so other aid workers want to work in Gaza. As another poster has pointed where are you going to find 30k people soon enough that are willing to go to Gaza and risk being killed (by mistake of course )

Israel’s government r have done a lot of harm and made peace harder.

corrected your sentence

There would have to be a handover process but I think in the long run it would benefit Gazans.

First you have to find 30k people willing to risk their lives. Being an aid worker in Gaza at the moment is a risk. There are too many killed by mistake.

Israel have been quietly barring NGOs from Gaza. There is no way they would allow 30000 independent witnesses into Gaza. No way.

Yes, right now, but I am hopeful the war will be over soon and I can't see having UNRWA in Gaza post that will be beneficial for peace.

If they get rid of UNWRA there won't be a Gaza after this. Not one with Gazans in it anyway. I can't believe what I'm reading.

I know. In the middle of a humanitarian crisis where the population of Gaza are under siege, no independent media allowed in, aid workers getting killed, humanitarian aid being restricted, medical aid being restricted, they want to get rid of the only organisation keeping people alive. Sick.

Bingo! That's the plan and they make no effort to even hide it
