After all the news this week regarding IDF threatening peacekeepers in Lebanon this is news now.

from bbc

Two UN peacekeepers injured after Israeli tank fires at watchtowerpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time
12:50 BSTBREAKING
Two UN peacekeepers have been injured after an Israeli tank fired towards a watchtower at a UN base in southern Lebanon, the UN says.
According to a statement by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the observation tower at its headquarters in Naqoura was directly hit, causing the peacekeepers to fall.
"The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital," the UN says.
It adds that Israeli soldiers also fired at a UN base in Ras Naqoura, "hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system".
There's more in their statement which we'll bring you shortly.
UNIFIL is a UN peacekeeping mission created in 1978. It monitors hostilities and helps to ensure humanitarian access to civilians.

It's largely irrelevant political posturing by Macron. France only sells 30 million euros of military equipment to Israel anyway and Macron said France will continue to sell defensive weapons to Israel.

Still I guess he may pick up some future votes from it

It's possible you are right but I feel Macron has been increasingly critical for awhile now. France and the US were leading the efforts for a truce between Israel and Lebanon and both expressed their frustration when Netanyahu refused.

Macrons reasoning to ask other countries to stop an offensive arms embargo (as you correctly pointed out, not defensive) is he believes this is the only way to end the war(s)

His exact words were:
"We have reiterated the need for a ceasefire, and this ceasefire is essential both in Gaza and in Lebanon.
"It is necessary now both for our hostages and the civilian population who are victims of the violence, and to avoid regional contamination.
"This is why France has called for an end to the export of weapons used in these theatres of war... we all know that this is the only way to put an end to it."

Lettherebejustice · 11/10/2024 21:57

I don't believe his intentions are malicious and France is still a strong ally. I personally think this is the right call although you may disagree.

Irrelevant? You may believe this but it is a significant in the sense that France has now been joined by Spain and Italy ( of all countries!) to call for an embargo of weapons used in the slaughter of civilians both in Gaza and Lebanon. I hope other countries will do the same.
I am also glad that we sell very little ammunition to Israel. Being complicit in the murder of thousands of innocents would be a stain on our nation.
69 000 French civilians died between 1940 and 1945.
42 000 ( so far) in Gaza in a year.
Please could you explain to me how this is in self defence? I fail to see it.

Fifth peacekeeper wounded in southern Lebanon, says Unifilpublished at 14:54 British Summer Time
14:54 BSTBREAKING
A fifth UN peacekeeper has been wounded in southern Lebanon after being hit by gunfire, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) says.
In a new statement, Unifil says a peacekeeper at its headquarters in the southern city of Naquora was injured on Friday night amid "ongoing military activity nearby".
"He underwent surgery at our Naqoura hospital to remove the bullet and is currently stable," it says.
"We do not yet know the origin of the fire."
Separately, Unifil adds that buildings at a UN position in the village of Ramyah sustained "significant damage due to explosions from nearby shelling" on Friday night.
"We remind all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and premises, including avoiding combat activities near Unifil positions," it says.

Israel want them out and will continue to attack them.

Where do we all see this leading I don't pretend to be very well informed but from what I'm seeing and reading Isreal are trying to drag America into a war with Iran ? Trump if he was re-elected might just do it ?

I believe Israel wants to get rid off Palestine and the Palestinians either through death or ethnic cleansing.

They want a regime change in Iran and want to 'destroy' terrorist groups in the area. They think this will bring peace.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 12/10/2024 18:28

Seeing as those terrorist groups are committed to destroying Israel and have stated so many times publicly, I think there's a better chance of peace with them gone

Gone at any cost ?
Or is there a limit as to how far you would go in your mission of having them gone?

PollyPaintsFlowers · 12/10/2024 18:55

No, of course not at any cost, but do you see any kind of peace possible with two terrorist groups constantly attacking Israel and Israel attacking back?

It’s disgusting that UNFIL didn’t move their troops when Israel requested them to isn’t it?
No it's not disgusting! Israel have no authority over those troops they are not answerable to Israel and are there as peace keepers

Got to wonder why and what their agenda is
What are you implying here?

It’s likely these injuries would have been avoided
Yes if the IDF didn't fire on them.

as they’ve done fuck all to maintain peace in the region and prevent terrorist weaponry being used in the area considering rockets have been fired from Lebanon into Israel for the last 12 months.
How the hell do you know what they've done. They are there as peace keepers not peace enforcers, they are there to report on what activity they are witnessing in the region and to protect civilians.

Their mandate is not to impose peace but monitor peace. Clearly they're doing something right if the IDF wants to intimidate them to leave

Iran has said it will stop firing at Israel if there's a ceasefire in Gaza.
Hezbollah have said they will stop launching missiles at Israel if there's a ceasefire in Gaza.
Hamas have said they will stop firing at Israel if there's a ceasefire in Gaza.

The stumbling block is Israel, who insist on continuing their campaign in Gaza which has little or no hope of completely eradicating Hamas, and which is also radicalising a whole new generation of Israel-haters amongst the Palestinians.

A ceasefire is the first step to peace.

Israel continuing its military campaign, isn't.

@PollyPaintsFlowers
Hezbollah started attacking Israel with rockets three weeks before Israel started their offensive in Gaza, whatever they say about Gaza is just a front.

Can you provide a source for this please. My understanding was that Oct 8th was when Hezbollah first attacked Israel and that was an Israeli military position at Shebaa farms,

PBS News,
"Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel on Oct. 8, 2023, the day after Hamas’ surprise attack into Israel ignited the war in Gaza. "

PollyPaintsFlowers · 12/10/2024 19:41

@mouthpipette source for what? You've said yourself that Hezbollah attacked Israel on October 8th. Israel bombed Gaza starting on October 13th and their ground offensive started on the 27th of October. Hezbollah attacked Israel before they'd done anything to Gaza

mouthpipette · 12/10/2024 19:45

And after Oct 8, Hezbollah rockets and missiles didn't "rain down" or "pound" northern Israel. After Oct 8th there were very carefully measured exchanges between the IDF and Hezbollah, with neither side wanting to get embroiled in a full scale exchange. Israel had its hands full in Gaza and wasn't ready to open up another front, and Hezbollah didn't want to get embroiled in a full scale offensive. More than one journalist has described how it was all carefully calibrated and Tit for tat, but despite that it gradually escalated over time. Over the period until September this year, most of the firing has come from Israel. Mehdi Hasan claims that over 80% of the ordnance fired across the border, in the 11 months after October 8th, came from Israel.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 12/10/2024 19:46

Mehdi Hassan?? I trust him as much as I trust Donald Trump. I've seen his allegations get torn apart on Twitter

@PollyPaintsFlowers I was interested by you saying this because of not hearing about that before. I tried searching but cannot find anything to show this. Please would you post a link if possible?

I knew there had been attacks between Hezbollah and Israel before Oct 7, but you seem to be referring to something more specific shortly before Oct 7.

were the peacekeepers that have been injured (& the topic of this thread despite all your efforts to derail it) to be hamas or hezbollah members?
