After all the news this week regarding IDF threatening peacekeepers in Lebanon this is news now.

from bbc

Two UN peacekeepers injured after Israeli tank fires at watchtowerpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time
12:50 BSTBREAKING
Two UN peacekeepers have been injured after an Israeli tank fired towards a watchtower at a UN base in southern Lebanon, the UN says.
According to a statement by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the observation tower at its headquarters in Naqoura was directly hit, causing the peacekeepers to fall.
"The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital," the UN says.
It adds that Israeli soldiers also fired at a UN base in Ras Naqoura, "hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system".
There's more in their statement which we'll bring you shortly.
UNIFIL is a UN peacekeeping mission created in 1978. It monitors hostilities and helps to ensure humanitarian access to civilians.

That's such a sanitised version @VictoryPending

I'm sure as non muslim person, you can tell me about my religion better than I can.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 14:57

If that's the spin you want to put on it @VictoryPending but as you can see from what I shared from online sources, not everywhere and everyone shares the same benign view

"Hams [sic] is not a 'democratic civilised country' they're a bunch of terrorists, nobody expects them to uphold anything, Israel is now heading in the same direction"

Exactly. They broke the ceasefire on October 7th, another one will just allow them to regroup and rearm themselves. They've already sworn more October 7ths. Let Israel do its job and protect its people

How is firing at peacekeepers part of protecting their people?

mouthpipette · 11/10/2024 15:53

Exactly. They broke the ceasefire on October 7th, @PollyPaintsFlowers

There was no ceasefire. Where do you get this nonsense from ?

Please provide proof that one was in place and I will apologise for calling it nonsense.

A few days earlier, dozens of stone throwing Gazan teenagers had been shot in the legs and ankles and two weeks prior to that in September the IAF had carried out airstrikes on 3 consecutive days in Gaza.

EasterIssland · 11/10/2024 12:11

oh if only they weren’t so hypocrites and they kept selling arms to Israel despite they announced they were stopping ….

ps a very disappointed Spanish who is not surprised about the double face from the Spanish government.

I am French and I feel the same but it is actually the first time that the two nations have openly mentioned an embargo. It is a first step in the right direction. Hopefully.

@mouthpipette

MAY 2021 | OPERATION GUARDIAN OF THE WALLS

In response to protests against the pending eviction of Palestinian families in East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah and clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians on the Temple Mount, Hamas and PIJ launch rockets at Israeli cities. Israel responds with airstrikes on Gaza. In parallel, Arabs and Jews clash in Israel’s mixed cities, instigated by extremists on both sides. After over two weeks of hostilities, Hamas and Israel agree to a ceasefire brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the U.N..* Months later, Israel begins issuing thousands of entry permits to allow Gazans to work in Israel.

I can't find any evidence of airstrikes in the run up to October 7th, can you help?

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 16:14

@mouthpipette I can't find anything on Google about teenagers being shot either

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 16:16

@mouthpipette of course, even between 2021 and October 7th 2023 Hamas didn't stop launching rockets into Israel

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 16:19

@mouthpipette you said Gaza initially, now you're linking to events in the West Bank. You know those are two seperate areas, right?

@mouthpipette oh my vad# that is a very confusing article

"NOUR SHAMS REFUGEE CAMP, West Bank — Israeli airstrikes struck militant sites in Gaza on Sunday for the third straight day, the Israeli military said, after Palestinian militants near the border fence launched incendiary balloons into Israel and threw an explosive at soldiers." 😵‍💫

The first sentence is where the article was written from or the journalised based. The rest is about Gaza

@PollyPaintsFlowers
Does this help ?

"Israel carried out a series of airstrikes in the Gaza Strip late on Friday, September 22, 2023, after Palestinian activists launched incendiary balloons into Israel as a week of violence along the volatile frontier intensified. The rising tensions along Israel's front with Gaza came as fighting in the occupied West Bank surged – to levels unseen in two decades. In the latest bloodshed Friday, the Israeli army killed a Palestinian militant in the northern West Bank."

Gaza Strip: 28 Palestinians wounded by Israeli fire in border clashes

The operation was the most recent in a series of stepped-up raids Israel has been staging in Palestinian areas of the West Bank.

Yet another Israel-bashing thread. You people need new hobbies.

Personally, I don’t know what UNFIL are doing, for a ‘peacekeeping’ force, allowing a terrorist organisation to take over seems like a huge failure.

The UN really does seem to be a massive part of the problem in ME. There’s so much evidence now that UNRWA was employing Hamas terrorists.

Once again, criticising the actions of the Israeli government and the IDF is not bashing Israel. No government in the world is above criticism.
If the Israeli government were not authorising the appalling slaughter of civilians in Gaza, the WB and Lebanon, these threads wouldn't exist.

Maybe it would be useful for you to look up the role of UN peacekeepers. You would then have a better understanding why they are deployed.
The UN really does seem to be a massive part of the problem in ME.
Please elaborate.
There’s so much evidence now that UNRWA was employing Hamas terrorists.
Indeed. 12 in total ,out of 30 000 employees.
One of the 07/07 attack in London was a learning mentor in a primary school, highly respected by teachers and parents alike. Do you believe that every learning mentors are terrorists?

PeasfullPerson · 11/10/2024 16:33

No need to worry! I’ve just read, that the world's most moral army, will be investigated by the world’s most moral government, and this sort of action will surely never happen again!

The US can therefore, with a clean conscience, keep sending bombs to the great democratic Israel, which they will use to blow up civilians, while shooting humanitarian workers and peace keepers, safe in the knowledge there will be zero meaningful consequences.

Most people by now have worked out that if you don’t agree with killing civilians and destroying infrastructure, because terrorists, then you must be anti-Israel and are seen as the enemy.

The guardian

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed it was responsible for wounding two UN peacekeepers in Lebanon on Friday.
The UN peacekeepers were injured by an Israeli strike near their observation tower in south Lebanon, after Israeli forces “identified an immediate threat” and “responded with fire toward the threat”, according to the IDF. Their statement continues:
An initial examination indicates that during the incident, a hit was identified on a Unifil post, located approximately 50 meters (yards) from the source of the threat, resulting in the injury of two Unifil personnel.
The watchtower that came under Israeli fire on Friday is located at the mission’s main base in Naqoura.

Macron has repeated his calls for arms embargo today after UN peacekeepers were fired at a second time. He also said this was done deliberately.
Biden said he's asked Israel not to do it again, bless him, he thinks that should do the trick.

The joint statement by France, Spain and Italy which is strongly condemning the IDF for attacking UNIFIL:

I’m not a 100% fan of Sanchez or the party they govern with. I wish they stopped selling arms to Israel like they’ve said they’d. But glad it’s him and not tories or far right.
im glad to see that Italy who is governed by a right - far right party has joint Spain and France in this statement.

I was also surprised by Italy joining in. Meanwhile, Germany is selling more weapons...

1dayatatime · 11/10/2024 21:47

It's largely irrelevant political posturing by Macron. France only sells 30 million euros of military equipment to Israel anyway and Macron said France will continue to sell defensive weapons to Israel.

Still I guess he may pick up some future votes from it
