After all the news this week regarding IDF threatening peacekeepers in Lebanon this is news now.

from bbc

Two UN peacekeepers injured after Israeli tank fires at watchtowerpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time
12:50 BSTBREAKING
Two UN peacekeepers have been injured after an Israeli tank fired towards a watchtower at a UN base in southern Lebanon, the UN says.
According to a statement by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the observation tower at its headquarters in Naqoura was directly hit, causing the peacekeepers to fall.
"The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital," the UN says.
It adds that Israeli soldiers also fired at a UN base in Ras Naqoura, "hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system".
There's more in their statement which we'll bring you shortly.
UNIFIL is a UN peacekeeping mission created in 1978. It monitors hostilities and helps to ensure humanitarian access to civilians.

@PollyPaintsFlowers the IDF have deliberately attacked UN peacekeepers. What's your opinion on that?

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 13:48

"Spreading lies and propaganda is not helping your argument. We can all read and watch the news and listen to independent reports on what is causing the lack of humanitarian aid in Gaza. Don't take us for fools."

Lies and propaganda that Palestinians have filmed themselves? You've proved your last sentence correct

And about the news

I think it's wrong

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 13:23

"Does "its job" include shooting at peacekeepers and their bases? What about all the other minor issues like murder, occupation, killing children, seizing land, targeting healthcare professionals and journalists, torturing people, withholding aid and funds, etc, etc?"

There's literally videos online posted by Palestinians showing Hamas seizing 35 out of 36 aid trucks, another showing civilians breaking into a building owned by Hamas and finding towers of aid being stockpiled

Your response seems somewhat disconnected from the question.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 13:48

I think it's wrong

So why are your posts deflecting away from the severity of that wrongdoing? Why are you suggesting the IDF be allowed to continue these actions?

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 13:51

"Your response seems somewhat disconnected from the question."

Does it? It seemed a mainly pointless question. People die in wars, it's not murder. Journalists have been killed, some have been found to be forward spotters for Hamas militants. Spotters were taken out in the Iraq war aswell. If there has been unlawful killings that's what military tribunals are for.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 13:52

I said Israel should continue doing its job of protecting its people

You said the IDF should be allowed to do "its job". The things I mentioned are things that have been confirmed to have been carried out by the IDF as part of their activities. Should we not criticise these things?

And by murder, I refer to such situations as using zipties to restrain unarmed healthcare professionals before shooting them in the head. Which has happened. That happened to my friends. That's murder.

Nobody here is suggesting countries shouldn't protect their people. What we're saying is that countries shouldn't behave like this while doing so.

It's urban warfare with militants hiding amongst and disguising themselves as civilians. I can't imagine how challenging that's going to be so I'm not going to judge

If you want to understand the mindset they're up against go on Youtube and watch the videos of summer camps in Gaza where they train children into being mini jihadists

Sigh.

I'm a healthcare professional who has worked in Gaza as well as other combat and disaster zones. I have friends in Gaza, West Bank, Israel and Lebanon at the moment. Over the past year I have spoken about this on this board, repeatedly.

@PollyPaintsFlowers there are several people on this board who have close personal links with the region. This isn't an abstract or distant thing for us. These are places and people we love being hurt because hate-filled (mostly) men value power and blood over peace and the lives of our children.

Scirocco · 11/10/2024 14:14

Please try to respect that in discussions here.

Statement: This morning, UNIFIL’s Naqoura headquarters was affected by explosions for the second time in the last 48 hours.

Two peacekeepers were injured after two explosions occurred close to an observation tower. One injured peacekeeper was taken to a hospital in Tyre, while the second is being treated in Naqoura.

Today, several T-walls at our UN position 1-31, near the Blue Line in Labbouneh, fell when an IDF caterpillar hit the perimeter and IDF tanks moved in the proximity of the UN position
Our peacekeepers remained at the location, and a UNIFIL Quick Reaction Force was dispatched to assist and reinforce the position.

@Scirocco I disagree. I don't think it's just about power. It's that Jews who are referred to in the Quran as pigs and who should be killed wherever they are found have a state in the middle of an otherwise Islamic hegemony. It was alright when they lived under Dhimmitude, but not now they have self-determination

I watched some of The ASK project's videos on YouTube about if there should be a two state solution, resoundingly the answer seemed to be no, and what would happen if Palestine was free from the river to the sea, the answers were either kill all the Jews or ethnically cleanse them. The responders were mainly women

You can go and watch them for yourself

Re your point about Jews being referred to as Pigs and apes in the Quran,

"The Question: “Does the Qur’an call Jews pigs and apes? And it is allowed for Muslims to do so?”

Answer:
Thanks for your question.:
In the second chapter of the Qur’an there is the story of the people of the Sabbath who failed to abide by Allah’s commands. Thus, according to the Qur’an they were turned into pigs and apes. However, there are a few important points to this story:

  1. It does not refer to all the people of the Jewish faith, but only a certain group of people from the followers of Musa.
  2. It is not appropriate for one to call people of the Jewish tradition “pigs and apes” or “sons of pigs and apes” since, besides being extremely rude, it is not correct. All major commentators of Quran mention that these pigs and apes did not reproduce but died off. Sh. Yusuf al-Qaradwi noted this mentioning that one should not do so. Finally, Muslims are ordered by Allah to “Speak that which is best” and to “Call unto the way of your Lord with wisdom.” Thus, it is not befitting for a Muslim to be lowly in his discourse, rude in his manners and bigoted towards others. Allah says, “[you must] be just. It is closer to piety.”

The 1988 Hamas Charter, and particularly its Articles 7 and 22, represented a condensed version of the pan-Islamist anti-Jewish ideas cultivated by Rashid Rida. Rida believed that the international Jewry contributed to Germany's defeat in the First World War; in exchange for Britain's promise to grant them Palestine. Furthermore; he asserted that they controlled Western Banking System and Capitalist system, created Communism in Eastern Europe and led Freemasonry to plot against World Nations. He also drew from Islamic traditions that displayed hostility to Jews and popularised them; rendering the conflict with the Zionists an apocalyptic religious dimension. Rida would persistently cite hadithss^ regarding the End Times Jewish-Muslim conflicts; some of which would be included in the future Charter of Hamas, such as:[142][143]
The Jews will fight you and you will be led to dominate them until the rock cries out: "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, kill him!"
Rashid Rida condemned the Jews for their arrogance towards the Prophets and arraigned them for abandoning religious values for materialism, all which made them recipients of Divine Wrath; which led to their downfall. He asserted that Allah decreed Muslims to construct Masjid al-Aqsa in the ruins of the Temple in Jerusalem and favoured Muslims to rule the Holy Lands by implementing shari'aa(Islamic law) and upholding Tawhidd. Rashid Rida's anti-Zionism was part of his wider campaign as a towering figure in the Pan-Islamist movement and would immensely impact subsequent Islamist, Jihadist and anti-colonial activists.[144] He also severely rebuked Christian Zionists, writing:
"It was astonishing that the intrigues of the Jews seduced many of the Christians of Europe and America by convincing them that believing in the Bible requires helping them to return to Palestine and the possession of Jerusalem … etc., as a confirmation to the prophets and a realization of the appearance of Jesus regarding whose person and deeds the two groups [Jewish and Christian] differed [in their interpretation]. The Jews refer to their Messiah as the earthly king who will come to restore the kingdom of Solomon, whereas the Christians refer to Jesus, son of Mary, who will return in His kingdom to judge the world."
— Muhammad Rashid Rida, in Al-Manar 30/7 pg. 555, [144]

Depicting Jews – and sometimes also Zionists – as "the descendants of apes and pigs" is extremely widespread today in public discourse in the Arab and Islamic worlds.
For example, in a weekly sermon in April 2002, Al-Azhar Sheikh Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, the highest-ranking cleric in the Sunni Muslim world, called the Jews "the enemies of Allah, descendants of apes and pigs."[1]
In one of his sermons, Saudi sheikh Abd Al-Rahman Al-Sudayyis, imam and preacher at the Al-Haraam mosque – the most important mosque in Mecca – beseeched Allah to annihilate the Jews. He also urged the Arabs to give up peace initiatives with them because they are "the scum of the human race, the rats of the world, the violators of pacts and agreements, the murderers of the prophets, and the offspring of apes and pigs."[2]
"Read history," called Al-Sudayyis in another sermon, "and you will understand that the Jews of yesterday are the evil fathers of the Jews of today, who are evil offspring, infidels, distorters of [others'] words, calf-worshippers, prophet-murderers, prophecy-deniers... the scum of the human race 'whom Allah cursed and turned into apes and pigs...' These are the Jews, an ongoing continuum of deceit, obstinacy, licentiousness, evil, and corruption..."[3]

From BBC

A Downing Street spokesperson says the government is "appalled" by reports that Israel has deliberately fired at an observation post belonging to the UN's peacekeeping mission in south Lebanon.
It follows a statement from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon which said an Israeli tank fired on Unifil facilities in southern Lebanon yesterday, hitting an observation tower and wounding two peacekeepers.
Speaking to journalists at the daily Downing Street briefing, the spokesperson says: "We were appalled to hear those reports and it is vital that peacekeepers and civilians are protected.
"As you know we continue to call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to suffering and bloodshed. It is a reminder of the importance of us all renewing our diplomatic efforts to resolve this."
Asked if the prime minister would agree with Ireland's Taoiseach (Irish PM) that Israel had broken international law, the spokesperson says: "All parties must always do everything possible to protect civilians and comply with international law."

The guardian

Human Rights Watch (HRW) called for a UN inquiry into Israeli attacks on peacekeepers belonging to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) on Friday, after three separate attacks on Unifil personnel in south Lebanon.

HRW said that Israel’s attacks on UN peacekeepers could be a violation of the laws of war, as peacekeepers, including armed members, are civilians. It further called for the UN to “urgently establish” an international investigation in Lebanon and Israel and that their results are made public.
