After all the news this week regarding IDF threatening peacekeepers in Lebanon this is news now.

from bbc

Two UN peacekeepers injured after Israeli tank fires at watchtowerpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time
12:50 BSTBREAKING
Two UN peacekeepers have been injured after an Israeli tank fired towards a watchtower at a UN base in southern Lebanon, the UN says.
According to a statement by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the observation tower at its headquarters in Naqoura was directly hit, causing the peacekeepers to fall.
"The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital," the UN says.
It adds that Israeli soldiers also fired at a UN base in Ras Naqoura, "hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system".
There's more in their statement which we'll bring you shortly.
UNIFIL is a UN peacekeeping mission created in 1978. It monitors hostilities and helps to ensure humanitarian access to civilians.

Perhaps new hobbies should be offered to the people and organisations currently attacking peacekeepers in Lebanon. If they could find something more constructive to do with their time, then it would solve a lot of problems.

Is there anything that the IDF could do that would be unacceptable or deserving of a degree of criticism, in your opinion?

I expected most people would consider deliberately attacking UN peacekeepers to be a bit of an issue, but it seems like there's a not insignificant number of people on here trying to find a way to excuse it.

And, again, it is not the role of peacekeepers to fight or subdue Hezbollah. And, again, even if it were, that's not grounds to shoot at people.

👏👏

I'm not saying they deserved to be attacked - the injuries seem very light and we don't know the full circumstances. But it is the case that UNFIL has allowed itself to be bossed around by Hizbollah for years, and that's part of the reason why Lebanon is in such a mess.

Isreal is the problem here if they stuck to any of the treaties since 1948 they would be peace but they won't be happy till they've wiped Palestine of the face of the earth - time for Israel to be accountable

But it illustrates a pattern of the UN being part of the problem.

and why does it bother you so much when people point out that UNRWA employed terrorists?!?!

the zionists in Israel are the problem....

"Hams [sic] is not a 'democratic civilised country' they're a bunch of terrorists, nobody expects them to uphold anything, Israel is now heading in the same direction"

Exactly. They broke the ceasefire on October 7th, another one will just allow them to regroup and rearm themselves. They've already sworn more October 7ths. Let Israel do its job and protect its people

Recklessly firing at innocent UN peacekeepers is not protecting its people, or do you think it is? Protect your people yes, act like a bunch of terrorists, no

And watch them kill tens of thousands of other innocent people in the process? No

Pattern. Mind proving that there is a pattern apart from the ones the poster has pointed at where you can proof that UN employs terrorists around the world? Would you say the British police are rapist and killers seeing their last years actions?

Maybe the lack of condemnation on IDFs actions and the feeling that they are approving and/or justifying it is what bothers me

Does "its job" include shooting at peacekeepers and their bases? What about all the other minor issues like murder, occupation, killing children, seizing land, targeting healthcare professionals and journalists, torturing people, withholding aid and funds, etc, etc?

PollyPaintsFlowers · 11/10/2024 13:21

The October 7th massacre victims and the hostages are also innocent as will any future victims if Hamas are allowed to carry out their threats of future massacres.

There's literally videos online posted by Palestinians showing Hamas seizing 35 out of 36 aid trucks, another showing civilians breaking into a building owned by Hamas and finding towers of aid being stockpiled

Yes I know but what is served by killing more innocent civilians?

EasterIssland · 11/10/2024 13:25

I love when a thread about IDFs actions end up in a discussion about hamas. Nothing to see here. Let’s pretend Israel is not committing war crimes one more time …

@grimupnorthnot Please do not use ‘Zionists’ this way ( meaning extreme ultra nationalist supremacist) as it is confusing, and misleading. It has become a misinformed, fudged or conflated term at best, and at worst a way of accusing all Jews falsely.

Just say ‘extremists’ or give some names of those involved. Haaretz suggests that extremists should be called Kahanist rather than ‘Zionist’ (after Kahan a US Jewish terrorist).

There are perfectly ordinary Israelis who are Zionists because they think of Israel as their homeland - following Britain giving it to them in 1948 after WW11 and the Holocaust when Jews had no where to go not even the US or U.K. who at that time actually rejected them. These Zionists are ordinary, reasonable people who support the rights of Palestinians and believe they should have their own state too.

This was something I learned on this board from other posters, so am passing it on.

ScrollingLeaves · 11/10/2024 13:32

This is exaggerating and not helpful at all. There were not 35 out of 36 aid trucks taken by Hamas.

The hostages have nearly starved too incidentally with lack of food.

"This is exaggerating and not helpful at all. There were not 35 out of 36 aid trucks taken by Hamas.

How do you know? Do you have insider knowledge that's more accurate than the Palestinians filming it?

Any lack of food is down to the thefts by Hamas, Palestinians have been posting videos themselves

Regardless of aid, I don't think the hostages welfare is high on the list of priorities for Hamas considering six were murdered when they were close to being rescued

Spreading lies and propaganda is not helping your argument. We can all read and watch the news and listen to independent reports on what is causing the lack of humanitarian aid in Gaza. Don't take us for fools.

Dulra · 11/10/2024 13:44

This thread is meant to be about the UN peacekeepers in Lebanon. Let's try and stick to that rather than rehash old arguments that have been discussed at length on these boards

also, this is about IDF firing at UN peacekeepers. There are threads about Hamas where these comments are more than welcome.

@PollyPaintsFlowers how can you defend what even the US have grudgingly criticised. Or are you just refusing to see the truth?

Israel needs to address urgently "catastrophic conditions" among Palestinian civilians in the besieged Gaza Strip and stop "intensifying suffering" by limiting aid deliveries, its ally the United States told the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday.

The Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Simon Harris has described Israel’s attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon as a breach of international law.

Speaking to BBC News in Washington DC, Harris said it was an "extraordinarily concerning development".

The IDF have posted videos of Hamas tunnels in schools and hospitals but Hamas have denied it so that's ok 🙄

The UN is hardly independent anyway

I don't know what happened with Hind, that was an absolute tragedy

Would you say the same thing if Hamas intentionally killed them? Or would you be outraged that they had?

Used to the derailments in order to hide Israel’s actions. And I’d prefer if the threads didn’t descend into fights between posters as the threads end up being pulled away by MNHQ and the reality hidden

(there was another thread about peacekeepers that got deleted because of the above a few days ago)
