Two UN peacekeepers injured after Israeli tank fires at watchtowerpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time
12:50 BSTBREAKING
Two UN peacekeepers have been injured after an Israeli tank fired towards a watchtower at a UN base in southern Lebanon, the UN says.
According to a statement by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the observation tower at its headquarters in Naqoura was directly hit, causing the peacekeepers to fall.
"The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital," the UN says.
It adds that Israeli soldiers also fired at a UN base in Ras Naqoura, "hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system".
There's more in their statement which we'll bring you shortly.
UNIFIL is a UN peacekeeping mission created in 1978. It monitors hostilities and helps to ensure humanitarian access to civilians.

We can criticise anyone we want. It's called freedom of speech.
As Ben Gurion once said " The test of democracy is freedom of criticism". Do you disagree with this?

Who are you to question him [Netanyahu]

Who is she to question him?
She is a rational human being.

Are you someone who does not question him?

Luckily, there are also some Israelis who question him and the evil people he is in a pact with.

BBC
In the last few moments we've been reporting on a Unifil statement that Israeli tanks have destroyed the main gate of a peacekeeping compound in southern Lebanon.
The statement further says that Israeli troops stopped a "critical Unifil logistical movement" yesterday near Meiss el Jebel, south of Beirut.
The organisation said that it seeks to "remind" the IDF of obligations regarding the safety of UN personnel and property. Around 10,000 UN peacekeepers are serving in Lebanon

More now from the Unifil statement, which has accused Israeli forces of destroying the gates of one of its compounds in southern Lebanon.
The statement says the incident occurred early this morning at a UN position in Ramiya. At approximately 04:30 local time, while peacekeepers were in shelters, two Israeli Merkava tanks "destroyed the position’s main gate and forcibly entered" the facility. Israeli troops then "requested multiple times that the base turn out its lights".
The statement says the tanks left around 45 minutes later after Unifil "protested through our liaison mechanism, saying that IDF presence was putting peacekeepers in danger".
At approximately 06:40 local time, Unifil says, peacekeepers at the same position reported the firing of several rounds 100 meters north, which emitted smoke.
"Fifteen peacekeepers suffered effects, including skin irritation and gastrointestinal reactions, after the smoke entered the camp."
"The peacekeepers are receiving treatment," the statement adds.

Two Israeli tanks "destroyed" the main gate of a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) position in the south of the country this morning, the force says in a statement.
Israeli troops then "forcibly entered the position," the statement on Telegram adds.
Israel has yet to comment on the allegations, but it comes just hours after PM Benjamin Netanyahu again urged UN forces to withdraw from the border area.
We will bring you more developments from this shortly.

IDF acting like bloody terrorists. Macron is right, it is long overdue we stop arming them.

If enough EU countries feel strongly enough about an arms embargo, they could force Germany to accede to one through the EU Parliamentary process and courts. That is why it is important to see EU leaders coming out and saying. France and Italy are 2nd and 3rd most powerful & net contributers in EU and Ireland and Spain are not a light weights either.

I read this article today about the UNIFIL peacekeepers and the part that really stood out is how by shadowing the IDF during prior Lebanon invasions, they were able to rescue civilians and put a brake on IDF “atrocities” as they knew they were under UN observation.

Irish peacekeepers stood their ground in the face of an Israeli invasion of Lebanon. It’s not the first time — The Independent

Irish peacekeepers have a long history of putting themselves in the firing line in Lebanon — and becoming so close with locals that people speak English with a Cork accent, Richard Hall writes

My cousin is a peacekeeper in Lebanon at the moment. It's a really concerning time, my poor Aunt isn't coping well at all with the news this week and is so concerned that Israel are going to escalate their attacks and hurt her son. Her husband also served in Lebanon so this isn't her first rodeo but I don't suppose this is something that you get used to.

I've been very surprised over the past week that so many people out there seem to think that UNIFIL should take orders from an invading army and also the lack of knowledge about the purpose of UNIFIL. Although I suspect the 2 of those things are intertwined.

I sincerely hope he is safe and stays safe.
I totally agree that many people do not understand the role of peacekeepers. I feel that the IDF want them out so they carry on committing war crimes without any witnesses.

In my experience, we kind of kept manners on the Israelis. In other words, we kept them from committing the more serious actions, or for want of a better word, atrocities, that they might have committed if we hadn’t been sitting there watching them or tailing them around, as we often did ,”

That's why the UN are there, to act as observers and curtail war crimes.

Kindatired · 13/10/2024 19:35

If you can’t open the link , this is the key point made by experiences peacekeeper, John Durnin:
” In my experience, we kind of kept manners on the Israelis. In other words, we kept them from committing the more serious actions, or for want of a better word, atrocities, that they might have committed if we hadn’t been sitting there watching them or tailing them around, as we often did ,” he said
49 Irish peacekeepers have died in the Lebanon on peacekeeping missions .
About 600 IDF have died in South Lebanon in the same period having killed thousands of civilians and allegedly carrying out assorted war crimes- cluster bombs , white phosphorus etc

Lettherebejustice · 13/10/2024 19:45

@GhostCicada it is very concerning isn't it. Let's hope that Israel doesn't endanger them any further than they already have.

If the IDF have attacked UN peacekeepers, surely they have declared war on the UN. I don't understand how there is any other way of looking at it. To continue to fund and support Israel at this time is to declare yourself an enemy of the UN.

They’ve killed around 200 members already from UN as mentioned in my previous post. But they were Palestinian , now they’re attacking those that are international so it’s making the news but I’m not surprised about their behaviour. They didn’t care about urnwa and they won’t care about unifil

We're the 12 Druze children playing on a football field get mistaken for a military base by Hezbollah? Or the two people killed walking their dogs last week?

How come the interceptors/Iron dome didn't work for the Druze children?
I watched the horrific Nova festival documentary and the missiles were being intercepted left, right and centre,
This is genuinely not a goady question. Is it a weakness in the system ? is the area not covered?
