Nasrallah has been the head of Hezbollah for a long time and is/was very close to Iran. That's a heck of a blow to strike on Iran if confirmed.

Israel-Lebanon latest: Israeli military says Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah killed in overnight strike on Beirut

The Israel Defense Forces say they killed Nasrallah and other Hezbollah commanders in strikes on Friday. Hezbollah is yet to comment.

Hezbollah has confirmed it. The guardian

Hezbollah has issued a statement confirming the death of its secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday, ending his 32-year tenure as the group’s leader.
The group said in a statement:
His eminence, the master of resistance, the righteous servant, has passed away to be with his lord who is pleased with him as a great martyr.
The leadership of Hezbollah pledges ... to continue its jihad in confronting the enemy [Israel], supporting Gaza and Palestine, and defending Lebanon and its steadfast and honourable people.
The statement did not mention who would succeed Nasrallah, or how the group would respond to the assassination of its long-time leader.
Hezbollah added it would continue its battle against Israel “in support of Gaza and Palestine, and in defence of Lebanonand its steadfast and honourable people”.

Amazing news. That's most of the senior Hezbollah leadership eliminated now I think?

Switcher · 28/09/2024 14:13

It is good news but the coverage seems to boil down to some self fulfilling scaredy cats talking about how it will inflame tensions. Instead of focussing on the fact Islamism subjugates people and frightens them into compliance with a load of misogynist, fatalistic nonsense, instead of maybe giving air time to the many people across the Middle East who would live happier lives without terrorists, and who might feel cautiously optimistic. Apparently we should all just give in to violent bullies in case we annoy them.

Silence1 · 28/09/2024 14:36

@Switcher Yeah that's so right. That will be why the US abandoned Afghanistan is such an appalling chaotic stupid way.
Left all their weapons behind either to be sold on the black market or used by the Taliban.
Choose the wrong airport to evacuate from , left teenagers who had never lived under the Taliban so terrified they clung to planes that were taking off only to fall to the deaths , abandoned people who had helped them, abandoned the women of Afghanistan completely and then the US whacks a load of sanctions on so thousands of children starve to death.
Apparently because the US public were tired of war and spending. But here we are with the US throwing billions at Israel to kill even more women and children.

The final thought is - never got rid of the Taliban.

Pretty much all of them in a rather short space of time.

@Switcher your words are how the statement below comes across

After what has happened in recent days in the Lebanon, it is not clear to me who are the violent bullies to whom you refer.

Is it amazing news? He's now a martyr, and whoever succeeds will probably be even more radical. Their support in South Lebanon will grow and become even more hard-line.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 28/09/2024 14:56

In which case the region and the US need to give huge support to Lebanon right now, while Hezbollah has been weakened, to get their country back and not give the Iranian-funded Islamists a home any longer.

This, it's like the assassination of Haniyeh who was replaced by the more radical Sinwar.

The younger members are generally more radical and hard liner.

32 years ago, after the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary-General Abbas al-Musawi in 1992, Israeli newspapers headlined:

The era of conflict with Hezbollah in its comfortable playground has ended.”

Bravo Israel, bravo Mossad - and even (with reservation) bravo Bibi. The whole week has been a spectacular success. Really should've let them take care of Afghanistan! It's wonderful to see all the videos of celebration from Lebanon, Syria and Iran. Odd they don't seem to be featuring much in the British media - but presumably we'll be seeing similar on the streets of London...

Werecat · 28/09/2024 16:41

Good

OrangeBlossomBlue · 28/09/2024 16:42

Hurrah

The people in Syria Lebanon and Iran really don't want these terrorists amongst them. They really don't. If only the people could gave their countries back from these terrorist organisations.

And yet, many in Lebanon and Syria and Iran celebrated. Interesting.

If there is celebration and it’s not shown I question why

OrangeBlossomBlue · 28/09/2024 16:59

It’s a bit late in the day to start questioning why so much of the media coverage is antisemitic isn’t it? Where have you been for the past thousand years or more?

Mercurial123 · 28/09/2024 17:00

Yes, many people in Lebanon (Christians, Sunnis, and Druze) will be celebrating. However, there will be many Shias in deep mourning, and their resolve will be stronger.

One source is from an Israeli newspaper
People won't share that even if true

I think it’s always good to ask why things make it to our news or not and never late in the day.

The leadership of Syria won't like he's dead but to downtrodden people it appears something to rejoice about

YoYoYoYo12345 · 28/09/2024 17:07

Yes, he wasn't a great man. He was a terrorist leader.

There aren't many great male leaders in the middle east.
