Nasrallah has been the head of Hezbollah for a long time and is/was very close to Iran. That's a heck of a blow to strike on Iran if confirmed.

Israel-Lebanon latest: Israeli military says Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah killed in overnight strike on Beirut

The Israel Defense Forces say they killed Nasrallah and other Hezbollah commanders in strikes on Friday. Hezbollah is yet to comment.

I've lived in the Middle East and seen the reactions of Moslems to Islamic martyrs. Will that do?

No.

25milesfromhome · 28/09/2024 22:18

No.

Fair enough, no point discussing it with you. I know what I've experienced, believe it or don't believe it. Although I wonder if it's not Christians and Jews you've been watching celebrating?

I thought the preferred term was "Muslim" and your spelling is now considered offensive.

Happy to be corrected (not by you though).

No. It really won't do. There was a thread on here quite a few months back which explained that the spelling Moslem is considered offensive, so probably best to stick to Muslim from now on.

My apologies, I am very old and realised after I'd typed it I'd reverted to what I'd learned in the Sixties by mistake. Muslims indeed it is these days (as I typed in my original post).

I refer you to my answer above, absolutely no intention to offend by misspelling.

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom I find it really weird how you're talking about Muslims as though they're one homogeneous group.

Right, I am talking about Islam as I have experienced it when living in the Middle East. That's it.

Especially in this context where which branch of Islam you are is quite important to how you perceive Nasrallah & other geopolitical issues.

Ok so how many terrorists did you see them celebrating?

You're not wrong. I am going to bow out, admitting my ignorance and inability to make the requisite distinctions. I am sorry to have offended anyone by my lack of understanding. Not my intention at all.

I've been watching people celebrating in Syria and Lebanon, I'm fairly sure there weren't any Jews there, due to the ethnic cleansing and all.

See my above responses. And frankly, if wrong spelling is the only thing all these poor suffering people in the area have to worry about, they're doing fine. Which they're clearly not.

I think you should retract and ask the moderators to remove your previous post. It is not accurate, and prejudiced comments like that contribute to the othering and discrimination experienced by Muslims, including in countries like the UK.

Do you really think Muslims in the middle east are some homogeneous mass who all think the same? Have you got no idea of what Hezbollah have done in Syria? There are a lot of people celebrating and it's not because they think Nasrallah is a martyr who is in heaven, it's because they think he was a monster who was responsible for tens of thousands of deaths. Of fellow Muslims.

Are you assuming most Shias are terrorist-supporters?! Come on, get a grip. Only terrorists and their supporters will be mourning this, civilians of any religion and ethnicity will be either celebrating or worried about what comes next but they sure as fuck won't be mourning.

I said many, but not all read my post. I've lived in Beirut. My ex is Lebanese. Disagree with me if you like. Let's see what his funeral is like.

EasternStandard · 29/09/2024 07:27

Thanks yes this is it. I was surprised as support was high for some

‘The popularity of Hezbollah remains sharply divided across sectarian lines. Whereas 34% of Sunnis and 29% of Christians express even a somewhat positive view of Hezbollah, 93% of Shia do so—with 89% saying they have a “very positive” opinion.’

@Mercurial123 raises the funeral I guess it’ll show something re pp on this

mids2019 · 29/09/2024 07:40

I think the points about Muslims not being a homogenous entity is important. I think the response to the Hizbollahs leader's death is obviously going to be mixed in Lebanon with differing factions of Islam (and Christianity) showing huge differences in feeling. It is also important to point out to the world in general especially the young that there is a great deal of conflict in the middle East including Muslim groups combating other groups (Syria/Saudi Arabia v Yemen etc.)

However I think there is hope from some in the region that Muslims can naturally unite as an anti Israel group and divisions miraculously disappear. There are probably Muslims in the UK that understood the need to eradicate Hizbollah or at least feel no loss in the passing of its leader.

Peace in the middle East is a hugely complex affair and splitting the various conflicts into simplistic religious divide may be misguided.

TomeTome · 29/09/2024 07:40

It would be very unusual for a Christian to celebrate anyone being murdered. This is not a football game and lives are not points.

mids2019 · 29/09/2024 07:46

I liked Kamala Harris's speech about how it is no loss to the world seeing Hezbollah decapitated as a group. The UK government should have put out a strong statement such as hers instead of a call for a ceasefire as we have seen the death of a proponent of global terror - this is a boon for the world.

No one is going to be offended by the British government simply stating a victory in the war on terror is a good thing.

And no one should have been reading out the statement with the word martyr in it as per R4 news

A ceasefire should be called regardless of them being killed. Bonn’s keep being dropped in Gaza and hostages are still under captivity.

You've got to be joking! You're not likely to see Christians and Jewish people celebrating the death of Hezbollah leader in Lebanon. I mean sseriously they've been driven out.

Wow. So wrong.
