Nasrallah has been the head of Hezbollah for a long time and is/was very close to Iran. That's a heck of a blow to strike on Iran if confirmed.

Israel-Lebanon latest: Israeli military says Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah killed in overnight strike on Beirut

The Israel Defense Forces say they killed Nasrallah and other Hezbollah commanders in strikes on Friday. Hezbollah is yet to comment.

Listening to news headlines I hear the terrorist statement including the word martyr but no mention of celebration

Their statement shouldn’t be given this credence and reaction should be news

And yet, many in Lebanon and Syria and Iran celebrated. Interesting.

You do know that Rebel held area in Syria = ISIS and whatever small groups and factions affiliated with them?a group so barbaric (beheading videos etc.) that America and Russia worked together to eliminate them.

Yes, many people in Lebanon (Christians, Sunnis, and Druze) will be celebrating. However, there will be many Shias in deep mourning, and their resolve will be stronger.

Are you assuming most Shias are terrorist-supporters?! Come on, get a grip. Only terrorists and their supporters will be mourning this, civilians of any religion and ethnicity will be either celebrating or worried about what comes next but they sure as fuck won't be mourning.

Indeed many on other countries nearby will be happy if hezbollah take a few losses. They are nice people

mids2019 · 28/09/2024 18:35

One less terrorist to many is a divine blessing.

There will be many in Lebanon glad of his ending and there was talk that Hizbollah could be limited politically when so weakened.

I'm perfectly aware there are many vile islamist extremists terrorist organisations throughout the region. So much hate within one area towards each other ( regardless of Israel), they seem to be able to create conflicts against each other all the time. So much hatred against others of supposedly the same faith, all these terrorist groups are as bad as each other, all hating each other. None of them any good. Poor people stuck with those.

The Muslims who are celebrating his death are celebrating the death of a martyr and rejoicing in his glorious death. Death like this is viewed ifrom a different perspective than the Western one.

Really? You may be right idk

I still question the reading of the martyr statement

We shouldn’t advance their rhetoric

Take a look at the videos then. Some weep, some cheer, are you really trying to say it's all the same. You do realise he wasn't liked by all different groups/organisations/factions don't you?

So they're glad the Israelis killed him and wouldn't have it any other way? Jolly good.

Or...maybe it's got something to do with the 100,000s of Syrian deaths on his CV.

IAmASpoon · 28/09/2024 19:21

What on earth are you talking about? While terrorist-supporters and terrorists will be considering him a martyr, normal everyday Muslims will be doing nothing of the sort. They'll be celebrating the fact he is gone, not his martyrdom. Some will be concerned about what will follow and others won't care one way or another because why would they unless they're directly affected by his actions? But only terrorists and their supporters will be celebrating him 🤦🏻‍♀️

They aren't right. They're passing on misinformation and prejudiced opinions about Islam, contributing to the 'othering' of Muslims.

Is it really so hard to believe that people might just be happy someone they hated and feared is dead?

My first instinct was that they were happy for good reasons

Maybe the pp could substantiate further

There was a poll on here with views re Hezbollah in Lebanon

I was a bit surprised by the stats as I have had the fortune to have friends from the country, but it seems views are disparate

I don’t know if anyone has a link

The leadership of Syria won't like he's dead but to downtrodden people it appears something to rejoice about

I do winder about that, Assad has basically turned Syria into a client state of Iran. They went in to “help him out” like they “helped the Lebanese”. I wonder if he might actually be a little pleased if it loosens Hezbollahs/Irans grip over his country. Not that the citizens will be benefit from it.

User37482 · 28/09/2024 19:46

I imagine a lot of lebanese will be worried about the possibility of another civil war if the main players start tussling for control. For their sake I hope the government and the actual Lebanese army come out on top.

User37482 · 28/09/2024 19:53

Mercurial123 · 28/09/2024 14:50

Is it amazing news? He's now a martyr, and whoever succeeds will probably be even more radical. Their support in South Lebanon will grow and become even more hard-line.

Not sure about this, everyone who could have easily stepped up has been taken out and I’m not sure the next person in charge will be around for very long given whats happened over the last few weeks.

I actually think a lot of Lebanese would like to see Iran out of it’s country, the Israelis to go away and to just be normal. I have friends who grew up in Beirut during the civil war (some have PTSD). It’s horrific and I doubt many want another one. Some will be radicalised but what do the majority want, not just the Shia?

It also depends on a) if Hezbollah is able to get itself together before another group make a grab for control, Israel is destroying it’s weapons depots atm so it’s probably drastically weakened. Also I imagine many Hezb supporters will feel disaffected by Iran not stepping in on their behalf, it may prompt a re-think on the part of many lower level members.

mids2019 · 28/09/2024 20:25

I agree with the above.

What you are hoping for is Hizbollah to be displaced internally and I am hoping that may be they can be weakened to an extent that their support falls off and their position in Lebanon is unsustainable. My hope really is that Islamist terrorism including Hamas can be expunged from the region and long term that there is peace and prosperity.

Bravo Israel, bravo Mossad - and even (with reservation) bravo Bibi. The whole week has been a spectacular success. Really should've let them take care of Afghanistan! It's wonderful to see all the videos of celebration from Lebanon, Syria and Iran. Odd they don't seem to be featuring much in the British media - but presumably we'll be seeing similar on the streets of London...

@rumblegrumble I think you need to eat less M&Ms 😉

I've lived in the Middle East and seen the reactions of Moslems to Islamic martyrs. Will that do?
