This is from The Times of Israel.

Netanyahu reported to say he prioritizes Philadelphi over hostages, horrifying Gallant
www.timesofisrael.com/asked-to-decide-between-hostages-or-philadelphi-netanyahu-said-to-prefer-latter/

It is worth reading to see the details showing how much this is to do with what Netanyahu decides against the judgement of others in charge of security who say they do not need the Philadelphia Corridor (which is the sticking point with Hamas in the hostage release/ceasefire deal).

Gallant replied to someone who said the Prime Minister can do what he likes by saying,

“The prime minister can indeed make all the decisions, and he can also decide to kill all the hostages.”

‘The Israel Defense Forces said Saturday night that troops had located several bodies in the Gaza Strip which could be the remains of Israeli hostages, but cautioned that the bodies had yet to be identified…
“At this stage, the forces are still operating in the area and carrying out a process to extract and identify the bodies, which will last several hours,” the military said Saturday night.‘

Alex Lubanov, 32, who become a father whilst in captivity was also recovered.

Carmel Gat, 40

Almog Sarusi, 25

Overnight, the IDF recovered the bodies of six Israeli hostages from a Hamas tunnel in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, who according to the military were murdered by their captors not long before they were found.

The hostages are Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Ori Danino, 25, Alex Lubnov, 32, Carmel Gat, 40, and Almog Sarusi, 25.

According to the IDF, the six were murdered by Hamas a short while, possibly around a day or two, before troops found them.
The IDF did not have the exact location of the hostages but had indications of a general area where the six could be held. The military says it operated carefully in the area, due to the possibility that hostages were being held there.

Troops began to search a tunnel complex yesterday until they found the hostages dead in the afternoon. Overnight their bodies were extracted from Gaza and brought to Israel for identification.

The IDF says there were no clashes with Hamas terrorists inside the tunnel, and the guards who likely murdered the six fled the area.

The tunnel in which the slain hostages were found, in Rafah, is about a kilometer away from where soldiers found hostage Farhan al-Qadi earlier this week.

Goldberg-Polin, Yerushalmi, Danino, Lubnov, and Sarusi were abducted from the Nova music festival near Kibbutz Re’im by Hamas terrorists on October 7, while Gat was taken from Kibbutz Be’eri.

“Following the recovery of six murdered Israeli hostages from Rafah overnight, 97 of the 251 hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7 remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 33 confirmed dead by the IDF.” Times of Israel

Such very sad news @EllaDisenchanted - and to be killed so close to being rescued too

SharonEllis · 01/09/2024 07:16

This is so terrible, after the joy of rescuing a hostage alive so recently. My heart goes out to their families.

Peakpeakpeak · 01/09/2024 07:24

Awful news, and a gross violation of human rights and international law.

Heartbreaking

Parkingt111 · 01/09/2024 09:05

Their poor families, I can't imagine what they must be going through. My first thought was of Hersh's mum 😞

They are all precious but I felt like I knew Hersh like my own son.

It really was an act of evil to kill them when they were so close to being found. From what I read three of them including Hersh were also supposed to be released in the first round of the deal, if the deal went through.

Was that him and the two women? I'm generally sceptical about the possibility of able bodied military aged men being voluntarily handed back, whatever gets claimed.

IDK if you mean Hersch - he lost a hand and part of his forearm [grenade injury] on 7/10?

Yes, I meant was it him plus the two women.

From what i read It was Hersh too because of his injury.

Edited to add the first category includes women, men over the age of 50 and those hostages who have serious medical conditions. It was reported in the TOI but I'm not sure if that's verified.

Plus Sinwar needs his human shields. Turns out he's less keen on martyrdom for himself than he is for other Palestinians. Shocker.

Itoosurvive · 01/09/2024 15:47

The range of possible options for Israel to pursue was radically closed off the day Hamas took hostages on 7th October 2023 leaving no good option on the table.@SababaToo

But it wasn't closed off and there were other options.

Immediate negotiation after October 7th could well have led to hostage release, however Netanyahu immediately decided to embark upon his campaign of revenge and retribution.
Proof that negotiation frees hostages is evidenced by the release late last year and further negotiations would have led to more being freed. Tragically, Netanyahu has put his own political interests above those of the people he is supposed to be freeing. He has made all the wrong choices from the outset.

Absolutely. Both Hamas and the Israeli government have acted in gross violation of human rights and international laws. Both need to be held to account in a court of law. This can't come soon enough.

Hersch’s parents are in so many people’s minds. All of these murdered hostages have parents who loved them and longed for their release and return, but the world came to know these extraordinary two, especially Hersch’s mother. This is dreadful news.
