Sad 4th thread and hostages still held by Hamas and others.

■ HOSTAGES/CEASE-FIRE: The IDF retrieved the bodies of six hostages from Gaza overnight into Tuesday, all of whom were taken alive by Hamas on October 7. The hostages are Avraham Munder, Chaim Peri, Yoram Metzger, Alex Dancyg, Nadav Popplewell and Yagev Buchshtab.

• The IDF announced the deaths in captivity of five of the the six men over the past two months, but Munder's state was unknown until his body's retrieval was made public on Tuesday. PM Netanyahu said Israel will "continue to make every effort to bring back all our hostages – both the living and the dead."

• The IDF said that in March it operated near the tunnel in Khan Yunis from which the bodies were recovered, adding that it is possible that air force strikes in the area caused some of their deaths.

• Osnat Peri, the widow of hostage Chaim Peri, whose body was recovered, said that "there is no doubt that for political reasons, they did not save people who could have been saved."

This feels like very different to wars where men come out and fight man to man.

Well it is isn't it? One 'side' is one of the top ranked militaries in the world and the other is a terrorist group. It isn't military to military, Palestinians aren't allowed a military to defend themselves like Israelis are.

It's probably not the right thread since my comment at the bottom might derail from the hostages information. It was something I noticed when reading around where the deceased hostages were located.

Update on finding the bodies of the 6 hostages.

"On Tuesday, the military said the operation to extricate the six bodies came after prolonged combat in a built-up area. The military said that Israeli forces found a 10-meter-deep tunnel shaft that led to an underground route, along which they neutralized obstructions, blast doors, weapons, explosives and militants’ hide-outs, the statement said.

The military said that Israeli forces scanned the route and noticed that part of the tunnel’s concrete lining was loose. When soldiers removed the lining, they discovered a hidden branch of the tunnel network, and found the bodies.

A spokesman for the Israeli military, Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, said that the tunnel was under an area previously designated as part of the humanitarian zone of Khan Younis. The Israeli military has shrunk that zone repeatedly as it presses its assault "

What a brave couple.

I am so impressed that Hersch’s father was able to say,

”There are no winners in this conflict.”

What bravery, nobility, and selflessness they have both shown in spite of the horror they and their son, and all the hostages and those killed Oct 7 endured at the hands of Hamas.

What wonderful news, and what a relief his health seems all right in spite of having been in captivity all this time. His family will be so happy to have him back. If only all the other hostages could be free too.

It seems he was found by chance ) according to the New York Times ) with no guards around.

Haaretz news brief:
HOSTAGES/CEASE-FIRE: Kaid Farhan Elkadi, kidnapped from southern Israel by Hamas on October 7 and held in a tunnel in Gaza, managed to escape his captors before being rescued by the IDF. Soroka Medical Center in southern Israel reported that Elkadi is fully conscious and that his general condition is good. He was also interviewed by the Shin Bet security service.

• Elkadi's brother Hatham told Channel 12 News that "We hope other families get this moment."

• No other hostages were found in the tunnel where Elkadi was held before escaping, the IDF said, adding that it also did not encounter his captors or any other terrorists. Transportation Minister Miri Regev violated military censorship with a social media post in which she disclosed the area from which Elkadi was rescued earlier on Tuesday.

• The New York Times reported that Elkadi was found "by chance" during an operation to expose an underground Hamas tunnel network in southern Gaza, citing two Israeli officials.

• Around 20 hostages' relatives, activists briefly blocked the Ayalon Highway in Tel Aviv on Tuesday morning, calling for a hostage release deal.

This is sad in every way. I hope it is some solace to Boaz that his father had at least had some friendship and support:

HOSTAGES/CEASE-FIRE: Rescued Israeli hostage Kaid Farhan al-Qadi saidthat he was held with another hostage, Arye Zalmanovich, 86, from Nir Oz, and saw him die after not receiving necessary medical care. Arye's son, Boaz, told Israeli radio that al-Qadi wanted to speak with him to share details about his father. "We understand from Farhan that a special bond formed between them, as he provided non-medical support to my father," Boaz said.
