We have had consistent expression of the principle that freedom and peace must be for all - that must include the release of hostages. We have had remembrance of the hostages at events, including the wearing of ribbons, speakers talking about hostages, prayers for their safety and release, etc.

People want the UK government and others to stop aiding and abetting the killing of innocent people who are in desperate need, and to push for a ceasefire and peace process. Not a unilateral 'giving up', but a bilaterally agreed end to this madness. Every version of that process that I've seen advocated has the release of hostages at its centre.

IDF confirms deaths of hostages Alex Dancyg and Yagev Buchshtav in captivity
By EMANUEL FABIAN

The Israeli military says it has confirmed the deaths of two hostages in Hamas captivity, after obtaining new intelligence information.

Alex Dancyg, 75, and Yagev Buchshtav, 35, were believed to have been held together by Hamas in Khan Younis and died several months ago, while the IDF was operating there.

The military did not detail the circumstances of their deaths, citing an ongoing probe. The possibility that they were killed by Israeli fire is being investigated.

Dancyg and Buchshtav were abducted by Hamas terrorists from their homes in Kibbutz Nir Oz and Kibbutz Nirim during the onslaught on October 7.

Their deaths were declared by a panel of health experts and members of the rabbinate, following new information obtained from by the IDF.

The IDF has now confirmed the deaths of 44 of the remaining 116 hostages held by Hamas since October 7. The terror group kidnapped 251 people during the onslaught. Hamas is also still holding the bodies of two soldiers since 2014 and two Israeli civilians who entered Gaza in 2014 and 2015.

Hamas in March claimed that Buchshtav had died due to lack of food and medication, and Dancyg had been killed by Israeli fire. The claims have not been confirmed by the IDF.

Buchshtav’s wife, Rimon Kirsht Buchshtav, was abducted with him and then released on November 28 in a hostage deal with Hamas.

😔i hope their families can find peace with this knowledge.

israelilefty · 22/07/2024 12:22

So sad. I remember the first elderly female hostages to be released talking about how Dancyg, who was a historian, helped the group of hostages to pass the time by giving historical lectures. Two more needless deaths in this conflict. Ceasefire and hostage deal NOW.

ScrollingLeaves · 22/07/2024 14:37

This is very sad indeed. Even if their families and friends had tried to prepare for the worst nothing will have prevented the shock and finality of this news.

That was a wonderful gift to have given the other hostages, Israelilefty.

I'm so sorry, @EllaDisenchanted .

I pray they are at peace and that their families can find some comfort that they have been found and returned home for their final goodbyes in this world. May they be reunited in the next life, and may those responsible for the harm caused to them be brought to justice. There is no possible justification for the murder of innocent people.

ScrollingLeaves · 25/07/2024 08:10

May their families and friends find some little peace in being able to bury them, but I cannot begin to imagine their grief and enduring sense of sadness and loss @EllaDisenchanted Thank you for keeping them centred.

quantumbutterfly · 25/07/2024 11:30

thank you for the links @EllaDisenchanted.

Beautiful words from Maya's son.

'Gal, their son, wrote after his mother’s death was confirmed that his family had hoped and prayed things would turn out differently.
“Mom, for more than 56 days you were on the other side of the fence, and our hearts did not stop worrying and missing you. And then we got the news — you are on the other side of the fence, but no longer with us, and our hearts stopped beating. Even now I cannot stop thinking about you,” said Gal.
“I don’t know when you were no longer with us. I know that already that day you were hurt badly from gunfire but we always tried to hold onto the tiniest hope that maybe, maybe, maybe someone had treated you and saved your life,” Gal continued. “I know that if you were still alive you would have probably gone crazy worrying about us. You would have been insane with worry for your beloved husband, Dad — may his memory be a blessing — who was killed in your warm and loving home and you didn’t even know. You would have thought about our sweet [dog] Scar who was also murdered… you would have been playing worried scenarios in your head about Bar and Dekel, because you wouldn’t know they were alive and with us.”
“You were always concerned that if you weren’t here, we would be there for each other, and the truth is, if you and Dad could see us now you would be so proud of us,” Gal added. “You raised an incredible family, a family that despite a million and one cracks is still standing. A family that fought so hard to bring you home to us.”
“I inherited so many things from you — your pull toward education, your belief in people, your uncompromising desire to give and provide… rest in peace with Dad, allow yourselves to rest and trust us that we are loved and embraced,” said Gal.

"I do not know how we can have reached this date and our hostages are not yet home" @EllaDisenchanted

In essence, because Netanyahu chose immediate reprisal rather than giving consideration as to how their release might be negotiated. He was following his agenda of political self preservation which involved whipping up popular support through administering his brutal "justice" on Hamas and the inhabitants of Gaza. Had he held back on his retaliation and worked towards hostage release, there would have been far more hostages returning to Israel. He is yet another shit politician and people (especially Israelis, who live in a volatile region) deserve leaders better than the likes of him.

ScrollingLeaves · 04/08/2024 21:12

Excerpt from The Guardian:

Despite that solidarity in the face of a potential Iranian attack, the US president, Joe Biden, has been open about concerns that the killing of Haniyeh will complicate efforts to stop the fighting in Gaza, which is key to regional de-escalation.

He had a “heated conversation” this week with Netanyahu, who was forced to deny that he was an obstacle to a ceasefire and hostage release deal, the New York Times has reported, quoting a senior US official.

That was just the latest confrontation between two increasingly uneasy allies. Biden reportedly told the Israeli leader to “stop bullshitting me” when they discussed the return of hostages at an in-person meeting at the White House late last month.

“Biden realised that Netanyahu was lying to him about the hostages,” the Haaretz newspaper quoted a senior administration official as saying.

Biden’s reported scepticism about Netanyahu’s commitment to the return of Israeli hostages puts him on the same page as Israel’s defence chiefs. They believe the country’s leader is not interested a ceasefire deal even though they consider a workable proposal to be on the table, Israeli media reported this week.
