Has Syria been forgotten and who is to blame for civilian deaths in this region. It is Assad or rebel groups?

(Its a conflict in the middle East with huge civilian casualties but doesn't involve Israel so I guess this thread will for a death)

@ScrollingLeaves

"Assad and Russia caused thousands upon thousands of deaths I think."

I don't disagree but I really fear that much worse is now to come.

I don't think those that are celebrating the fall of the Assad regime fully understand what they are getting as a replacement.

mollyfolk · 08/12/2024 13:19

It looks a little bit hopeful ...

The military command of the opposition forces has issued a statement, with strict instructions sent out to all opposition forces.
The statement, as reported by Al Jazeera, states:
It is strictly forbidden to fire bullets into the air under any circumstances, as it causes panic among civilians and endangers the lives of the innocent.
It is forbidden to tamper with public institutions and property, as they are the rightful property of the people. It is our duty to protect and preserve them and help develop them.
It is forbidden to encroach upon or harm any private property in any form.

Why is Israel bombing Damascus?

Lalgarh · 08/12/2024 17:27

Possibly to take out weapons stockpiles.

Meanwhile, where are all the drugs Bashar had?

@OchaLove thanks for that I'll have a look 👍

Just seen on Sky that Israel is 'fighting on four fronts' in Syria. Ground troops.

Why is Israel bombing Damascus?

Because killing 43,000 people in Gaza wasn't enough for them

DifferentNameForThisBoard · 08/12/2024 18:36

@JaneJeffer @NotTerfNorCis how about actually sticking to the facts about what Israel is doing. Israel has:

  • Moved into the buffer zone in the Golan Heights between it and Syria. For purely defensive reasons - to deter any rebel factions who might think this is a good time to move into the Golan Heights.
  • Allegedly bombed a chemical weapons store and potential nuclear/weapons facility in Damascus. While Assad’s rule was barbaric and cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of his own citizens, no-one knows what this new regime will be like. As things stand, HTS is still designated a terrorist organisation by the US and others. Israel is pre-emptively trying to ensure that chemical and nuclear weapons are not available to them.

Including a military research centre used by Iran supposedly. Seems like a good idea to me.

User37482 · 08/12/2024 19:08

Yup all for Israel bombing chemical research and weapons research facilities. No-one should have those weapons. Didn't Israel have to step in to protect a bunch of UN soldiers the other day?

I’m not surprised they have set up further into Syria, the risks are extremely high of random groups deciding to take advantage. Turkey is stepping up it’s attacks on Kurds at the moment as are the SNA who should have been focusing on the regime. I wouldn’t be surprised if some jihadi decided to turn their attention to Israel.

Lalgarh · 08/12/2024 19:24

So...

Does this mean Shamima Begum is coming back

User37482 · 08/12/2024 19:34

I have a horrible feeling that this could descend into all out civil war. There are Syrian refugees flooding out of turkey apparently. Israel has bombed hezbollah trying to get into Syria which Syrians should be pretty happy about. They found quite a few Lebanese in prison, people who had been arrested by Hezbollah when Syria occupied Lebanon and dumped in this prison and forgot about. Poor souls, people who went in as teenagers leaving prison in their late 50’s/early 60’s for protesting.

It’s not a fact it’s Hamas propaganda. The majority of them were terrorists. Anyway this is a Syria thread.

I thought she wanted to live in an islamic state.

She's exhausted UK court options, ECHR is her next stop apparently though her case comes under derogations on grounds of national security.

Why so interested?

Well she's over there, alongside those Isis Beetles and other unrepentant Daesh members, but only because the region was in limbo.

Kurdish forces who were holding them are now being attacked by Turkish backed forces

”Facts” from the mouths of the terrorist group that carried out the Oct 7th massacres aren’t ones I’d ever believe.

Bashir Assad was responsible for the deaths of vastly more Arabs in his rein, than died in all the wars and conflict with Israel combined between 1948 to 2024.

That really is a fact - yet curiously it’s one that doesn’t bother you. I wonder why that is?

Video of prisoners being released from Saydnaya prison:

Reports say some prisoners are entombed alive on lower levels, and people are trying to dig through the concrete to get to them. I don’t really understand how that happened but it sounds like the departing guards shut them in.

Think the americans are stepping up anti-isis efforts, probably to make sure they don’t try a land grab and yeah those prisons. I still feel everyone should have taken back their isis members and let them rot in prisons in the western nations many of them came from. It was deeply unfair to dump it on the kurds.

God bless them they take so much shit for so little in return.

I hope NATO and the UN reprimand Turkey for it’s crimes against Kurdish populations but I won’t hold my breath.

It looks like a dungeon in the videos I’ve seen. They’ve found Lebanese, Palestinians, kurds and go knows who else down there.

I keep seeing claims that some in the west are upset about the fall of assad, I assume these are Iran/Hezbollah axis of resisters type supporters?

If anyone could explain this to me I would appreciate it. I get being worried about the rebel groups, most of them have committed human rights violations/ murder. But I don’t think thats why these people are upset given assad was blood soaked.
