Conflict in the Middle East

..but would someone mind explaining what is happening in Palestine

..and why?

Admittedly, I really do not follow current affairs. I don't watch television or read newspapers etc. I know there is conflict and a lot of people have sadly lost their lives, but I don't understand why?

I have tried to read up on Palestine, Gaza, Israel.. but it's very confusing and seems to stem back decades.

Please can someone explain the history and current situation in plain, simple terms.

Thank you.

The world is hardly standing by. Remove the emotion and hyperbole for a minute, and tell us your solution? One that doesn't involve more deaths in Gaza but also not wiping out the population of Israel.

Stop bombing innocent civilians indiscriminately, let humanitarian aid and medical supplies in, allow for the establishment of field hospitals in safe zones so the sick and injured can be treated properly and humanely. All of this will save lives in Gaza none of it will lead to wiping out the population of Israel. The fact that you can't come up with simple measures such as that and assume any attempt to safeguard Palestinian lives will lead to Israel being wiped out is completely irrational.

This is a forum. Anyone can take part not only those you directly ask.

I agree with every single word @Dulra has said. israel can self defend , as long as it’s within international law. What Israel government and some members of IDF are doing is not within this law

Fgs it is public forum we read comments and respond to them. Pm the person if you want a private conversation. Pretty insulting response to me

Thank you @Dulra . You have said what I was going to say

I actually had a whole reply typed out and then I looked at your message again and reread the words "emotion and hyperbole"on Mumsnet and I deleted it.

37 mothers a day are dying but it's ok I am far too emotional about it all.

Well said. Hamas have continually rejected israeli proposals including almost all of the west bank. They reject or break peace agreements. Their people are dying because of their own actions. Only they can put a stop to this. Stop hostilities and live peacefully with your neighbours

What hostilities are Hamas currently enacting? I only see hostility from Israel. The figure now is 40,000 Palestinians. Perhaps the hostility from Hamas is not being reported. Do you have reports of Hamas hostility since last year?

Kingoftheroad · 15/08/2024 16:49

oh you must have missed the part where the still have hundreds of innocent civilians in captivity

do you mean those in prison for a crime they didn’t commit or without a judge saying they’re guilty or a fair court ? Do you mean those that have disappeared and appear months after death after torture ? Do you mean those that are being tortured and raped whilst in prison?

lets not pretend that hamas is the only one keeping innocent civilians in captivity. Israel is doing it as well.

I see. Apparently there are over 1000 "administrative detainees" - Palestinians indefinitely imprisoned without charge, in Israel. Would they be classed as innocent civilians in captivity?

Are Israel planning on living peacefully with their neighbours? The track record isn't great there is it? Israel have been breaking international law for years the ICJ described their laws in their illegally occupied territories as “tantamount to the crime of apartheid". How are you supposed to live peacefully with a illegal occupier who has laws that are tantamount to the crime of apartheid, who illegally exploit Palestinian resources and violate their basic human right to self dermination(all of this is according to the ICJ)? Perhaps Israel should start leading by example, start withdrawing from their illegally occupied land, pay reparations as advised by the ICJ and be a peaceful country itself. I haven't heard of any plans from Israel that shows that they plan to stop 'systematically discriminating' (again the ICJs words) against Palestinians or that shows they have any intention of living peacefully with their neighbours.

@Kingoftheroad you only have condemnation for one side
Is this the peace you talk about?

Israeli terrorists openly burning down Palestinian homes and property at this current time in the illegally occupied west bank.. one Palestinian has also been murdered.

Seriously why is this thread still going when it's was very clear that it's intent was to goad, sew division and polarise views.

If anyone genuinely wants a peaceful solution as soon as possible then threads like this are not the way to achieve it.

I think most people who realise that no longer engage with these threads. They do sow division.

I hope the latest ceasefire talks prove fruitful.

And now the world stands by and watches another genocide - being committed by Israel. You’re right it was never supposed to happen again, the world said “never again”, yet here we are….. utterly depressing.

@MissyB1 so true

Fastfad · 21/08/2024 13:15

I take no pleasure in telling you that the IOF also use people as human shields, it was in the mjajor newspapers this month, often handcuffed, untried prisoners are pushed down mine shafts and so on. This propaganda narrative that they are moral is not something to swallow as there is so much evidence out there, they are often kids taught to love nationalism above humanity, check out the documentary by past members called "Israelism" the www.israelismfilm.com/ Doc website.

Fastfad · 21/08/2024 13:18

I'm hardly ever on here! Sorry.

Fastfad · 21/08/2024 14:05

No, this war has its roots in apartheid and forced displacement, have you even heard of the Nakba? And it goes further back into the horrific treatment of Jewish people by the NOzis in WWII.

Fastfad · 21/08/2024 14:11

I'ts true that some people are anti Semitic, but standing up for Palestinians' rights doesn't automatically make them so. Often people believe in human rights for all, Israelis also, by making it so black and white you do a disservice to all, your own included.

Palestine can stop this now. The people elected terrorists Hamas. The good people need to take control and elect a new government.
It’s unlikely Hamas would let them do that.

?? There haven't been elections in Palestine since 2006, How many options do you reckon the people have livgng as they do packed into the strip and how friendly do you expect them to be to their occupiers? They can't even move freely, they are continually harassed, and see what the settlers do in illegal village erasures and reconstructions as stolen land, and many still remember the Nakba, and have relatives in the massive, sprawling refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan that resulted from those hideous events. I've been there, those people can't work or leave, or vote, they only dream of returning. Even if they rebuked Hamas before all this kicked off, there was never security for Israel with all these layers of hurt against one another. The leaders on both sides did little for reconciliation or reparation, instead more walls, more attacks, more division, more wrongs added to the pile of wrongs remembered by generations...Likud even assassinated their own guy, the last Prime Minister before Netanyahu who has been in power these 20 years, Yitzhak Rabin, for trying to make any kind of peace!

No, there is no genocide happening against Palestinian people.
Many Palestinians voted in the terrorists to run Gaza.

its similar to this obsession of taking the word antisemitism and changing its meaning, and again with Zionism and changing its meaning… you can use the word genocide but you are not using it correctly.

some people are so obsessed with hating (Israelis/ Israeli government/ zionists, when they mean the word Jew but are too scared to say it) that they think they can say a genocide is happening when quite simply it isn’t.

It's true that some people are anti Semitic, but standing up for Palestinians' rights doesn't automatically make someone anti semitic.

Often people believe in human rights for all, Israelis also, yet by making it so black and white you do a disservice to all, your own included.
