..but would someone mind explaining what is happening in Palestine

..and why?

Admittedly, I really do not follow current affairs. I don't watch television or read newspapers etc. I know there is conflict and a lot of people have sadly lost their lives, but I don't understand why?

I have tried to read up on Palestine, Gaza, Israel.. but it's very confusing and seems to stem back decades.

Please can someone explain the history and current situation in plain, simple terms.

Thank you.

No, there is no genocide happening against Palestinian people.
Many Palestinians voted in the terrorists to run Gaza.

its similar to this obsession of taking the word antisemitism and changing its meaning, and again with Zionism and changing its meaning… you can use the word genocide but you are not using it correctly.

some people are so obsessed with hating (Israelis/ Israeli government/ zionists, when they mean the word Jew but are too scared to say it) that they think they can say a genocide is happening when quite simply it isn’t.

How else would you describe the constant bombing of civilians? The bombing of convoys of civilians who have been told to move from
one place to another?
The starvation and destruction of medical supplies?
The fact that there are no functioning hospitals or schools left in Palestine?

I don’t hate Jewish people, I am a Jew. A Jew opposed to Genocide.

Well that one is a question to ask Hamas and the Palestinians supporting them.

They'd probably agree that it's genocidal.

Hamas aren’t bombing their own schools and hospitals, gang raping civilians (on camera) and protesting for their right to do so.

Thank you for correcting your error. For future reference, putting quote marks around Israel can be seen as a denial that the country exists or has a right to exist.

Oh great yet another Gaza post that starts with "I don't know much about what's happening in Gaza but could someone please explain to me why [insert something provocative) .

At best you are being lazy - just google it and read from as many different sides of the debate as possible in order to form your own opinion.

At worst you are being goady trying to start yet another unhelpful polarising thread, which once you've got going you step away from.

I've seen way too many of these type of threads.

Just what I thought. There's plenty of information available, far more than for any other conflict ATM but no one keeps posting new threads about them. I wonder why that is 🤔

One side believes they have a right to live in a certain area of land and also have the right to decide who else can live there. They believe they are victims of oppression and any violence they use is justified self-defence, even if that's pro-active violence rather than passively waiting for an attack.

The other side basically believe the same thing.

This sums it up quite well.

Since 7 October 2023, the IDF has been accused of indiscriminate mass arrest and detainment;[150][151] extrajudicial killing of unarmed Palestinian detainees,[152][153] doctors,[154] and workers; making threats of mutilation,[155] death, arson, and rape;[156] and torturing Palestinians detained without legal charges.[157] It has also been accused of using excessive force against dozens of schools[158] and hospitals;[159] theft;[160] the cruel and unnecessary desecration and mutilation of deceased Palestinians;[154] and making no, or an inadequate, distinction between Hamas forces and civilians.[161] The targeting and destruction of a variety of cultural and educational sites have also been pointed to as genocidal actions.

How? If it’s one rule for Israel then it should be for the rest of the world. If Israel can “reclaim” land from historical times why can’t other countries and people? Israel is quite clear it wants land from Lebanon and Jordan among other places why can’t everyone else claim?

Why don’t you be honest about denying the rights of Palestinians to have a normal life?

Have a look at the state supported settlers, I believe this has been covered by Haaretz and other outlets.

This, this, this!!

I think there’s a difference between defending what the Israelis are doing right now - or their govt is doing - which amounts to war crimes, and defending their right to exist.

Much as there’s a difference between defending what Hamas did on 7 Oct - which was terrorism - and defending the right of Palestinian people to live and to also have a state.

Hamas terrorists hide among Palestinian civilians wherever they can knowing that IDF will seek them out wherever they happen to be hiding. That is why hospitals and schools are destroyed. Hamas cares less about innocent people dying than anyone else.

This is the bit I hadn’t realised til this year.

And dont Israel think “the area” includes what is now Jordan as this was part of the original area than was split?

Some Israelis do, yes.
