Killing of 5 Foreign Aid Workers from the World Central Kitchen

I've just seen on social media graphic videos of 5 dead aid workers from Australia, Austrian and British. The WCK are the people responsible for the ships coming into Gaza at the Jetty to distribute food. This was the second ship that departed from Cyprus a few days ago. Once arriving at the jetty they had to distribute the food. They were targeted in an armoured vehicle in Deir el Balah by the IDF. Its now being pick up by the press.Very sad.

Bit of an oopsie. Easy mistake to make, what with the clearly marked vehicles and pre-agreed route. Oh, sorry, three easy mistakes to make. Could happen to anyone.

In an area where it’s Hamas free.

whatever really , us and uk will be like that’s alright Israel we forgive you don’t do it again here you have billions of more weapons to kill Palestinians make sure not to kill white people

"No promises."

"We'll take that as an 'OK'. Here, have some more sniper drones."

I want to know what hold it is that Israel clearly seems to have over our Government? They must have something 🤔

Medschoolmum · 03/04/2024 07:51

This is a terrible tragedy.

The loss of those 7 brave and compassionate aid workers is devastating.

The fact that many more millions of innocent Palestinians may now starve because the aid agencies have been forced to pause their work is beyond comprehension.

I don't know exactly how or why this happened but Israel has to be stopped. The October 7 attacks were horrific and barbaric, and the hostages are still suffering - I have every sympathy with the innocent Israeli citizens who have victims in this. But the Israeli government's response is so far from proportionate or reasonable. How long are we going to stand by and let them carry on? And at what point are we going to admit that we are complicit in the genocide of the Palestinian people if we don't do more to stop it?

This interview with James Elder from UNICEF, an Australian working in Gaza explains the process every time an aid convoy needs to move anywhere and the permissions and coordination involved. Listening to this, I'm even more certain it was deliberate.

This is horribly tragic, and I have utmost sympathy for the condolences of the families of those involved.

It is, however, utterly beyond logic to conceive such an act would be deliberate. This event damages Israel, and does not help it.

I am pleased to see Israel, as always, has accepted responsibility, apologised and launched and investigation.

Apart from the fist sentence the rest of your post is satire right?

EllaDisenchanted · 03/04/2024 09:07

I’m sorry for their tragic loss 💔
their memory should be for a blessing.

Polish PM's message to Netanyahu:

"the vast majority of Poles showed full solidarity with Israel after the Hamas attack".
"Today you are putting this solidarity to a really hard test.
"The tragic attack on volunteers and your reaction arouse understandable anger."

cherryjamontoast · 03/04/2024 09:09

Based on Israel's conduct this far, it doesn't seem illogical to me that it was deliberate. But we will beg to differ.

I saw an interview with an aid coordinator on BBC news last night (can't remember his name or where he worked) but he was highlighting how dangerous it is for aid convoys to move around Gaza because Israel will not allow them to have any communication equipment. He said this means they are moving around without being able to communicate with each other or the IDF which is unheard of normally in these kind of high risk environments. The bbc reporter asked why is this and he said the IDF say it is in case Hamas gets hold of the equipment but he feels that is just an excuse.

In regards to this I think Netanyahus response was quite bad. I don't like Hagari but he atleast tried to show they were sorry and gave a more politically correct response, Netanyahu's seemed to say, it's war, these things happen so tough'

Does he not have a PR team that help him to articulate responses?

Arms sales. Unfortunately I really do think it is as basic as that. They also pander to Saudi etc, for much the same reason.

DrawersOnTheDoors · 03/04/2024 09:20

I see Haaretz are reporting that the strike happened because every commander now follows their own rules in Gaza, implying that chain of command has broken down.

Shame that international aid workers have been killed for this words to be told. Netanyahu should have been critized many deaths ago (and the sell of weapons stopped)

Efacsen · 03/04/2024 09:21

Thank you @cherryjamontoast that was interesting from James Elder

Maybe I missed it but I'd like to know if once the convoy has set off are they able to contact the IDF if they need to speak to them/something un-expected happens?

Or is communication more one way ie drive to this place, at this speed, don't stop or leave the vehicle and once you get there we'll speak to you again and tell you what to do next. If you deviate from any of this in any way we'll treat you as a hostile entity

The reason I ask is because I've noticed a couple of times [patients being evacuated by ambulance] that if something unforeseen happens eg road blocked/damaged so that the route needs to change it can all un-ravel pretty quickly

Efacsen · 03/04/2024 09:23

Ah @Dulra has answered my question about communication - thank you - this seems to be a big flaw

1dayatatime · 03/04/2024 09:28

So depending on where you sit on the ideological divide and given that the IDF have confirmed that they launched the strikes on the three vehicles and the tragic deaths of innocent aid workers seeking to alleviate starvation then there are two possible explanations:

The IDF knew that they were innocent aid workers and deliberately and intentionally set out to kill them.

Or that the IDF did not intentionally set out to kill the innocent aid workers and in their words that it was "a mistake following a misidentification at night".

Sadly because of entrenched and polarised views on both sides of the divide, the truth or facts of what actually happened is no longer relevant. Instead it is simply what people want to believe what happened.

So any discussion on whether it was deliberate or accidental is fairly pointless.

Our governments have to stop pretending we believe the shit Israel is feeding us. I really hope this is a turning point.

This is spot on. They consistently speak in a way as though the public generally agree and believe this rubbish. It’s insulting, infuriating and disingenuous.

@1dayatatime I personally think this is the likely scenario. A commander with trigger happy fingers made the call to have the convoy bombed because he thought he saw a armed militant enter the warehouse.
The problem is that even if Israel claims innocence this time, its track record in regards to how many aid workers have previously been killed in Gaza during this conflic, will cause alot of sceptism. And you can't really blame people for it either.

Parkingt111 · 03/04/2024 09:38

The only difference is the previous aid workers were mostly Palestinian so it didn't really cause much of a stir. This time they are from allied countries so the fallout and damage will be more significant.

3 independent strikes on 3 independent vehicles at 3 different locations on a route coordinated with the IDF

Facts and truth still matter regardless of the delusion Israel supporters want to live in

This was deliberate and now aid will no longer be brought in to support people in desperate need of it.
