However their new MP says this for Gaza'.

How can our politics becomes so skewed that voters are not thinking about the multiple issues on the domestic front which effect their daily lives where an MP can have direct influence?

Our MPs represent our people to advocate for them on areas where they are in a position to influence. To elect an MP based on a single foreign policy issue where there was limited UK influence just seems like a wasted vote.

Rochdale has suffered greatly back to the days of Cyril Smith, then the sex slaves. I'm sure a local could come up with more. I'm not surprised by this backlash.

I live in Rochdale but my mp is Chris Clarkson (conservative) thankfully. Galloway only campaigned in high Muslim populated areas and from what I understand only on this issue. The areas of Rochdale that aren't highly Muslim and are included in the boundary are mostly incredibly poor with low education rates and notoriously poor voter turn out.

I am quite upset that Galoway has got in as like you said he doesnt care about the town or any other issue.

I hope Tully runs again and gets in at the GE.

Chris Clarkson is also my MP. Have you ever tried to make contact? I’m awaiting a response from him but he is taking his time.

CwmYoy · 02/03/2024 11:26

I am disgusted with those who voted for this creep. They are beneath contempt.

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/03/2024 11:28

He’ll be out at the next GE and onto the next publicity stunt in another place where he doesn’t give a toss about the locals.

Baileyscream · 02/03/2024 12:21

@lifeisafunnyoldgame yes I have on a couple of issues. He has replied although probably not as helpful as I'd have liked.

I did goto see Liz McInnes when she was our MP over an issue with my son's ehcp, her office sorted it in a day.

The "positive" side of George Galloway here,

Obviously a video with an agenda, but if you want to know more about him, it's a start.

Who Is The Real George Galloway?

So many people are politically homeless in the UK, when an extremist like Galloway gets in the danger becomes more evident.

The Rochdale pioneers were an example of disparate people working together to meet their needs, they should be an inspiration.

The opposite of divide and conquer that seems so prevalent now.

Totally agree with this. I'm always amazed that in the UK and US which have big populations it seems there's just two parties that people can realistically vote for. I'm in Ireland where we've proportional representation which I am a big fan of. At each general election I have about 6 or 7 parties some of which field a couple of candidates and independents to choose from. Each of which have a reasonable chance of getting in. It is not in the tory or labour interests to change the voting system because it will dilute their support

I'm also from a country with proportional representation and I have always rated it highly, but then there's also proportional representation in Israel which obviously hasn't been a particularly successful endeavour...

Proportional representation only really works if there are parties who are a bit more centrist in their views. If they all identify as strongly right or left, it fails as everyone ends up unhappy 🙈

Anyway, Galloway is a revolting individual.

(That last sentence is not directed at you, Dulra. I don't think you like him. I just wanted to reiterate my disgust with him)

LoudSnoringDog · 03/03/2024 14:19

Utterly repulsive, revolting human being.

@Humdingerydoo yes we can all agree on that
I have not experienced PR when there isn't a couple of centrist options but I think without centrist parties no matter what the electoral system is people will be unhappy.

It's over ten years old but relevant.

NecessaryNC24 · 07/03/2024 12:55

Why doesn't this surprise me in the slightest.

His poor constituents 🤔

SortUKproblemsfirst · 08/03/2024 11:30

But Gaza is the answer. Sod Rochdale's problems. Poverty. Grooming gangs. Mental health spending so girls who were groomed and exploited could be helped to rebuild their lives. Education. Social care. Health. Jobs. Crime.

No one said But Sudan.

No one said but Yeman.

No one said but what about the Muslims being slaughtered elsewhere. No one gives a shinny shit about them.

In comes George Calloway. Hero to a few. Will he even attempt to sort other problems in Rochdale or use it to bash Labour. Probably not.

Yes. But gaza is the reason.

1dayatatime · 08/03/2024 12:37

@CwmYoy

I also strongly dislike George Galloway but it's important to remember that he was democratically elected by a majority of voters who did not have a problem with his (or the deselected Labour candidate's) anti semetic views.

Yes reasonable people despise not just his anti semetic views but also his support and payment from Sadam Hussein, his blaming of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on the West etc etc.

But who is the problem here - George Galloway's views or the views of the majority of Rochdale voters that elected him?

Don't forget sleep-rape.

But I doubt somehow that women's rights are are something that troubles him at all.

@NecessaryNC24

"But I doubt somehow that women's rights are are something that troubles him at all."

More importantly is whether women's rights are something that troubles the voters that voted for him.

He is just a symptom or a reflection of his voters views.

Which is shit scary in 2024!!

NecessaryNC24 · 08/03/2024 13:15

Yes. I've said it in IRL and I posted it here too but it's like society is regressing - it's terrifying.

silvernglow · 02/05/2024 17:25

Turns out he's also a Raging homophobe. I wonder if people voted for him despite that are because of it?
