Dignity in death

This is something that has saddened me since the bombing started in Gaza.
Every single faith has funeral rites who need to be adhered to to show respect to the dead and to help the grieving process of the ones left behind.
How can this be done in Gaza? Water is scarce so the bodies can't be washed. Bulldozers just dumped bodies in mass graves. Are the Muslims in Gaza even buried facing Makkah?
What about the other faiths?
What about the cemeteries being bulldozed?
I am sure, I will get the usual "it's a war; that what happens". For me, it is difficult to witness that , even in death, Palestinians are denied dignity. That's all.

... and you did not even mention that Israel routinely "kidnaps" corpses - or keeps the dead bodies of those who have perished in its prison system! And, no, that is not "just to check if they are hostages" - they do this in the West Bank, too, and have for many years!

Some of Palestine's dead have, literally, been held by Israel for years!

Various sources but here is an article from November regarding prisoners, in particular: https://www.thenation.com/article/world/israel-postmortem-detention/

EDIT to correct wrong dating of source

In Israel, Palestinian Imprisonment Continues Even After Death

The policy of postmortem detention leaves grieving families without closure.

Sorry, I wasn't aware of this. Despicable practice.

Oh, it was not meant as an accusation at all - more of an "I agree - and there is way more"!

English is my second language so at times, I miss the nuances! Thank you for the link. I wonder why they don't release the prisoners' bodies......

Mostly just collective punishment against their families - and a bit of general humiliation ...

... or maybe they really do believe in vengeful zombies?!

ConnieCounter · 13/02/2024 16:14

It's so very sad. I remember posters here criticising Palestinians when there were reports that bodies were left in the streets, or people were being buried at the side of the road - the inference being that they were bad or lazy and could not be bothered to bury their dead with dignity.

Reasonable people know why this isn't possible in Gaza at the moment.

It genuinely hurts my heart to think of all the mothers who've lost their children and can't even carry out funeral rites and burials in a humane and dignified way. Imagine if it was your father, or husband or child. It's beyond horrific.

Auvergne63 · 13/02/2024 16:38

I think anyone who has lost a loved one should be able to understand how this is the last indignity.
I also think of those mothers who have been robbed of burying their children in a fitting manner. How cruel!
Will they know where their little ones are? I doubt there is a register of where the victims are buried. How can anyone ever recover from this?

Israel treats the Palestinians disgracefully in life AND in death. It's despicable.

I know and I agree with you.

I’ve seen a video this evening on Al Jazeera of a Palestinian child shot by snipers whose body is being eaten by dogs. People are too afraid to retrieve the body for fear of also being sniped.

The Israelis see Palestinian lives as so unequal to them and worthless, they won’t even grant them dignity in death. Ironic really isn’t it given that Zionists argue the Jewish people deserved their own homeland because of the persecution they have suffered. Apparently persecution of only a certain people is abhorrent. When it’s Palestinians any form of human dignity or rights suddenly doesn’t seem to important.

Good to know you hold the IDF to the same standards as Hamas.

Hamas killed 1,200 people. Israel has killed 35,000 and is starving millions of others. Intentionally. There is no equivalence.

Desertrose2023 · 13/02/2024 17:18

Is there dignity in watching your children starve to death?

So death is a numbers game to you is it?

Not much dignity in that is there?

Of course they deserve dignity too.

I find it really disrespectful to come onto a thread in the way that you have shoving images in people's faces without commenting on the original situations referenced before your post. All I see is "No they don't deserve my respect but these people do". I don't know if that was your intention but that is how it came across to me. Just be a bit less aggressive next time. All victims deserve dignity and respect, I don't view one as more deserving than the other

Humdingerydoo · 13/02/2024 17:29

Everyone deserves dignity in death. No one should be keeping bodies from their loved ones. I don't know that Israel is doing that as I'm not going to rely on that particular link but I'll have a look later. I'm willing to believe it but not just from any random source. I'm sure I'll find plenty later tonight. No need to send me any links, I'll look for myself.

I'm curious about the 35000 figure though, @Desertrose2023 . Aren't Hamas themselves saying 28473?

That's your opinion.

Which you are entitle to have.

Cannot understand how anyone is defending Israel at this point.
