Conflict in the Middle East

Israel/Hamas War - Ceasefire

Each Saturday we are seeing demonstrations in London where people are marching with placards and calling for a ceasefire in the Hamas/Israel war.

However, it is difficult to know how the supporters of Palestine think this can be achieved? (Interestingly, no calls for Hamas to cease hostilities and return the hostages were heard - so is this really a call for unilateral disarmament?)

And who should Israel negotiate a ceasefire with? Hamas, ISIS, ISSP, The Muslim Brotherhood - all of these groups/any of these groups?

What is it the supporters of Palestine actually want?

Disgusting. And the UK abstained 😡

Great so the UK don’t know whether they want a ceasefire or not 🙄

Actually I strongly suspect most of the UK population do want an immediate ceasefire.

PeasfullPerson · 20/02/2024 16:53

Shame on the US and shame on us.

This confirms the Arab countries knew it would be vetoed. The US always made that clear in favour of their own ceasefire resolution.

I despair of the British government. What will it take?
So glad to be a French citizen today.

Thanks for sharing @EasterIssland

somewhat shocking/galling to see this statement in the article:

The prince's statement was welcomed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose spokeswoman said: "We want to see an end to the fighting in Gaza as soon as possible, so it is consistent with the government position."

Really ? Is it consistent with the government’s position? If we want to see an end to the fighting as soon as possible perhaps we should stop selling Israel weapons to continue obliterating Palestinian men women and children eh Rishi? Perhaps the government can actually call for an immediate ceasefire? The gaslighting is off the charts these days.

Andrew Robert's, UK House of Lords, praises the IDF for how many Palestinians they have killed.

My God. 10000 children dead (thousands more severely injured, homeless and starving) - but that’s ok?

He states as a military historian he has figured out that the ratio of civilian: Hamas deaths at 2:1 and in his knowledge of military and warfare he claims that although tragic is is a commendable figure.

Are you arguing with his statistics?

ConnieCounter · 20/02/2024 22:34

He believes the nonsense that 9000 Hamas fighters have been killed. Israeli figures because in their twisted world every man in Gaza is Hamas. Sick.

stomachamelon · 20/02/2024 22:40

Hamas official admit to Reuters about thousands of losses. Or are they lying?

A quick look at his Wikipedia page tells us of his views. He supported the Iraq war and also supports white rule in South Africa. His work has been criticised by the Economist, amongst others, for revisionism and errors. I doubt he’s ever been three feet away from his steak and his TV.

@Desertrose2023 that's just embarrassing for you.
How do you think peace can be achieved while you make comments like that?
Can you imagine if I made comments on Hamas' attire? I mean really?
That's what you are focused on?

PeasfullPerson · 20/02/2024 22:48

Maybe he’s just a cold hearted piece of crap. Apologies, but I’m too tired to talk politely about people who support the slaughter of innocent civilians tonight.

If after 5 months of their documented atrocities, you are going to post an article purporting to show support for the IDF’s professionalism and ethics, then you can expect some mockery dear.

I am also not a supporter of Hamas, so by all means feel free to comment away on their attire as you please?

stomachamelon · 21/02/2024 08:09

I posted an article to confirm what had been said in the House of Lords.

Ok. In any event it was intended as lighthearted mockery of the IDF given what was said by this man in the House of Lords. It wasn’t aimed as mockery of you personally.
and I don’t think it’s embarrassing to point out their behaviors in response to someone in the HoL praising their “professionalism, values and ethics”. I don’t know of another army that posts TikTok’s of themselves proudly rifling through women’s underwear drawers, or that wears and then dumps their adult nappies during active military operations. maybe someone with more military knowledge/experience than me can comment on whether that’s normal behavior for a professional army.

I have no idea if Hamas are lying or not but it is still difficult to comprehend that 10,000 children have had to die for 6000 Hamas fighters.

And thousands more severely injured, including those with severe burns, loss of limbs. Many have been orphaned and/or lost siblings. And hundreds of thousands are homeless with no hospitals or schools. Or proper food. FFS.

I don't think that is what people are arguing/ upset about. The fact that 10,000 of those civilian deaths are children doesn't seem to bother him at all. The fact that he is calling the IDF an army with professionalism, values and ethics, when there is countless evidence to suggest the complete opposite. The fact that he completely ignores the fact that there will be many more deaths due to starvation and lack of medical supplies and resources, the fact that over 1 million people have been displaced, bombed out of their homes living in tents, the fact that there are thousands of children now orphaned, the fact that for the most part Gaza has been raised to the ground. Statistics only tell one part of story and he has conveniently forgotten the other.

While numbers may not lie they can be used to mislead with half-truths

Snowypeak · 21/02/2024 08:57

And 6000 dead Hamas fighters vs 30000 overall deaths is a ratio of 1:5 not 1:2.

Snowypeak · 21/02/2024 08:58

With more civilian deaths to come and many more lives destroyed.

Snowypeak · 21/02/2024 08:59

And a lot of trauma and hatred created for the next generation.
