At @Offwiththecircus hasn’t said that there weren’t antisemitic placards at the marches, just that they haven’t personally seen them. I’m not sure if this is a willing misinterpretation of what they said or it has perhaps been misinterpreted unconsciously because tensions are so high? People are on high alert?

I think the only thing we can agree on here is that there is no place for antisemitic placards and words on the marches.

It is upsetting for the majority of people who are peacefully marching to be tarred with the label of antisemitic. It’s a shame that some people think it’s OK for Elyon Levy to slander a whole group of people who don’t agree with him. I don’t think it’s fair to do this to any group of people.

I think @Offwiththecircushas been deliberately offensive- it’s not a “misinterpretation “

This is what Offwiththecircus said re Elton Levy
on any reasonable interpretation of his statement, he was lying. Outrageously so. His reference to "another antisemitic hate parade through London" also makes it clear that he has history/that his comment was essentially pre-ordained. The folk with the sign quite probably (well certainly) know more about him and his track record than me. Highly offensive?well diddums - it may have been deserved.”
For on the basis of his statement about the march yesterday he is clearly to me a propagandist. A propagandist for slaughter.”
^^
“As for the start of the march timing, I am not aware of any evidence that the march broke any rules, despite some folk trying to stir things up by saying that it had. In short lying. Might I ask where you got your information from?“
^^
“I am not an expert on London's synagogues, so where was this synagogue there was the concern about? Had the folks from it indeed left before the march passed it?

I haven't read about any problems.
Of course propagandists may have access to different information sources.”

stomachamelon · 19/02/2024 18:22

I made the simple point that the march could not be described as anti semitic. I saw the vast vast majority.

@Offwiththecircus rubbish. No you didn't. Now you sound like a propagandist. You can't have done.

As for the rest.... you want the name of the synagogues? And addresses? The fact the organisers where asked to delay and were supposed to have done answers that question.

Do more research on Elyon Levy. He is pretty easy to find at The moment!

PeasfullPerson · 19/02/2024 18:56

I don’t know @Limeandsodaontherocks I think they sound a bit riled up because Eylon Levy has called the march another antisemitic hate parade through London and the title of this thread is inflammatory.

And other people sound wound up because they think @Offwiththecircus is being dismissive of examples of antisemitic behaviour.

I think people are too offended by slights against themselves to clearly see each other, which suits people who want to polarise the issue.

stomachamelon · 19/02/2024 19:06

@PeasfullPerson with all due respect you asked about the thread title and I had it altered.
It's obvious it's a quote and the second part of a thread.
I took what you said onboard.
I think it's ironic to say people are 'offended by slights' when it's antisemitism we are talking about (with examples) and you are moaning about the thread title again.

I do think they are being dismissive in lots of ways and I think if we were talking about racism for example there wouldn't be a 'get over yourselves/ it never happens' vibe.

It's very dismissive to say people are just 'wound up'. Would you say that on some of the other threads on the conflict board you frequent? Or just when your downplaying people's lived experience?

Limeandsodaontherocks · 19/02/2024 19:10

@offwiththecircus said “Highly offensive?well diddums - it may have been deserved.”

I think that particular poster is more than happy to cause offence so I will take his/her account of the March with a massive pinch of salt.

I don’t think I’m too offended by slights but I do judge the goodwill of posters by their tone. There are lots of people on here who attend the marches and their tone on here is respectful and fair minded which , I think, reflects the way they would behave on the march.
I am not convinced that @offwiththecircus would be respectful of synagogue attendees or anyone who didn’t agree with their view as they have not been respectful on here.

Limeandsodaontherocks · 19/02/2024 19:13

I also think the pro march people on here should call out rudeness from their own “side” if they want to convince other posters that they would call out offensive behaviour on the March.

noblegiraffe · 19/02/2024 19:32

It has clearly demonstrated that some wouldn't recognise antisemitism if it was right in front of them, and then if it was pointed out, they'd just say it wasn't a problem or that they didn't think it was antisemitism.

There's "offended by slights" and then there's "disgusted by racism".

wtaf this is not right.

Without fear or favour?

SomeCatFromJapan · 19/02/2024 20:45

How can people still be claiming there's no problem with anti-Semitism when the police are advising Jewish people to hide their identity for their own safety?

noblegiraffe · 19/02/2024 20:46

Why would non-antisemitic protestors be possibly riled up by a Star of David?

Why would non-Hamas supporting protestors be possibly riled up by a poster saying that Hamas are terrorists?

Why are the police having to intervene in both these cases?

SomeCatFromJapan · 19/02/2024 20:46

It's a mystery.

Who knows?
Some non-antisemitic protestors are just feeling so anti-Zionist that they need to project their prejudices onto any Jew they can find.

noblegiraffe · 19/02/2024 21:17

Oh but that's not antisemitic, they probably just dropped the sticker there.

25milesfromhome · 19/02/2024 21:25

It’s totally open to interpretation and I’m sure it comes from a place of deep empathy and a desire for peace.

PeasfullPerson · 19/02/2024 22:10

I stand by what I wrote above.

You are viewing the marches and comments about it through your own lens, and people marching are viewing the marches and your comments about it through a different lens.

Behaving in a way which scares and deeply offends Jewish people is wrong.

Demonising a largely peaceful protest about the inexcusable killing of innocent civilians is also wrong.

Nads0622 · 19/02/2024 22:12

Went to a March on Saturday, have been to many over the past 15 plus years . People of all different colours and religions ( many from
the Jewish community ) all with one thing in common , they want to see an end to the senseless slaughter of children by Israel. Fed up with people claiming any criticism of Israel’s actions is anti semitic. I’m a Muslim and am heavily critical of most Muslim governments around the world .

Limeandsodaontherocks · 19/02/2024 22:21

Nothing wrong with marching for ceasefire. There is something wrong when people on the March are abused for holding placards condemning Hamas / when posters draw offensive parallels between the current horror in Haza and the Holocaust ( knowing the memory of the Holocaust is a painful wound for Jewish people) .
Why can’t the people who attend the marches make more effort to ensure a minority do not bring the marches into disrepute? I’ve been asked on here who my favourite dictator is because I questioned the behaviour of some on the marches
The refusal to listen to concerns confirms fears that the participants don’t care too much about causing anti semitic offence.

stormy4319trevor · 19/02/2024 22:24

I just heard on LBC that only 13% of the British public thinks Israel should continue military action in Gaza. I think that suggests the purpose of the marches is to express majority opposition to the position our government is taking, rather than the purpose stated in the thread title quote.

Constantly telling Jews that there's nothing to worry about with these marches when there are demonstrably Hamas-supporting, Houthi-supporting, antisemitic elements to them is also wrong.

The policeman who told the Jew to hide his Jewish identity because he had something to fear from the marchers - where did he get that opinion from?

I don’t think Israeli military action should continue so I am one of the 87% who want ceasefire. I can’t imagine who doesn’t want this terrible conflict to end. . I would join in with the marches if I could also condemn the actions of Hamas who have also caused so much suffering for the people of Gaza.

stomachamelon · 19/02/2024 22:37

@stormy4319trevor which is absolutely what they should be for. To express opposition to the governments. Not to spout antisemitism. Against Jews in general.

Limeandsodaontherocks · 19/02/2024 22:40

Why can’t people condemn both Netanyahu AND Hamas on the March? That would be much more effective imo.

I’ve been in London during marches several times and I’ve never seen a placard condemning Hamas . Why is that?

stormy4319trevor · 19/02/2024 22:45

Agreed @stomachameleon You know my views, but I've been wary of marches because of what I've read on here. However, as much of the public seems to feel it's time to stop the military action, I think the marches primary purpose is an expression of the current mood. I'm sorry there have been people using them to express anti semitism, which I hope police will follow up on.
