Conflict in the Middle East

Anti-Palestinian and anti-Israeli rhetoric

WibbleWobbleFlop · 01/01/2024 09:47

From what I have seen, both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli media have been sharing false rhetoric. Many threads are derailed due to whataboutery and it takes away from the intent of each thread.

There have been posters claiming that people who support Palestine are pro-Hamas. Posters have claimed that all Palestinians not only support Hamas as their leaders, but actively want the events of October 7th to continue. There have been posters who have accused all Israeli of being guilty of the onslaught of Gazan civilians. There have been posters who claim that all Israelis think Palestine should be wiped out. There have been posters who suggest that Jewish people all over the globe are at fault for the current bombings of innocent Palestinians. There have been posters who suggest that Muslim people are radicalized terrorists.

All of these things are simply ridiculous.

I wanted to create a thread where people can see without bias that Palestinian and Israeli citizens (and in extension, Jewish and Muslim people) are victims and deserve peace.

... And it didn't even last one reply. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I was just typing a response thanking @WibbleWobbleFlop for starting a thread to discuss this so that hopefully we could discuss how the majority of Palestinians, Israelis, Muslims and Jews are not hate-filled and hopefully build some bridges.

Thatwasadamngoodlatte · 01/01/2024 09:56

I think it would have helped if Gazans hadn't openly celebrated 7 October

Well that’s a good start 🙄

Scirocco · 01/01/2024 10:01

For a bit of balance, the people I know/knew in Gaza tended to have the following reaction to October 7th:

  1. Horror at the events unfolding
  1. Horror at the rapid realisation that they were going to die pretty soon as well

Hardly a celebration.

WibbleWobbleFlop · 01/01/2024 10:02

Ugh. I apologize if I have created yet another cesspit.

Much appreciated, @Scirocco.

@ThinkIAteACementMixerLastNight Some Gazans did celebrate the massacre. The vast majority did not and should not be tarred with the same brush.

My Palestinian friends (who are lucky to currently live in safe countries free from bombing and oppression) were disgusted at the actions of Hamas on October 7th, the breach of ceasefire, and the ongoing rockets being fired into Israel.

My Jewish family (who have chosen not to live in Israel despite the Rule of Return, but many of whom are Zionists) find Netanyahu and the IDF abhorrent. They do not blame Palestinians for the actions of Hamas, not do they blame Israeli citizens who are mandated to serve in the Israeli army for the decisions of Netanyahu's government.

@Scirocco I hope your friends/family in Palestine are safe.

Thanks for the thread @WibbleWobbleFlop but please can we not forget the Christians of Gaza, they deserve a voice too 💐

WibbleWobbleFlop · 01/01/2024 10:12

@istoodonlegoagain Of course! I haven't heard anyone spewing hate at Christian Palestinians, so I hadn't mentioned them. They absolutely deserve a voice and are also victims in this mess!

Thank you, @WibbleWobbleFlop .

My colleagues and friends have died in large numbers, some are missing. A handful of people I know got out eventually.

Their bravery deserves to be remembered. As military forces destroyed the hospitals they worked in and cut supply lines so nothing could reach them, my fellow healthcare professionals stayed with their patients to the end, evacuated who they could, saved who they could, and were then killed.

The first person I called a friend who was killed by Israelis was murdered in 2003. IDF, extremist 'settlers' and ordinary people (trying to be edgy, perhaps?) still celebrate her death today.

WibbleWobbleFlop · 01/01/2024 10:28

@Scirocco I am so sorry for your losses. Each of their deaths was unnecessary and so utterly unconscionable.

Well…look's like this thread is just going to be ignored while everyone carry’s on with their mud slinging.

At least you tried OP 🤷‍♀️

WibbleWobbleFlop · 01/01/2024 12:53

I suppose it's better entertainment to hurl abuse and embrace ignorance than to actively listen and empathize.

But I'd like to say that for those feeling victimized (both personally and on a larger scale due to race, religion, or nationality), there are those of us out there who care.

Hello OP
Thank you so much for this thread
I have been reading your posts on various threads and i agree with just about everything that you write on all the different topics on this board.

Scirocco · 01/01/2024 12:58

Thank you, @WibbleWobbleFlop

Same for me in regards to this
The horrifying realisation for many at not only what had been done, but also at what was to come although I don't think even they anticipated the response we are witnessing now.

WibbleWobbleFlop · 01/01/2024 13:15

I don't think anybody could have anticipated the current situation except perhaps the parties responsible for it's orchestration.

I’m not ignoring this thread, I’m reading and taking on board what people are saying.

Parkingt111 · 01/01/2024 13:37

I hope its OK to add on here that there is a AMA by a Israeli citizen which I found very insightful

WibbleWobbleFlop · 01/01/2024 13:42

@Parkingt111 Yes, that AMA was excellent (minus the disrespectful posters). The OP was very articulate, sensitive, and insightful.

Very droll @ThinkIAteACementMixerLastNight

I don't think anybody could have anticipated the current situation except perhaps the parties responsible for it's orchestration.

There have been some reports alleging that parts of the Israeli government/forces had previously learned of plans/strategy for similar attacks but may have dismissed it as being unrealistic and beyond Hamas's capabilities... If that's the case, their intelligence network may come in for some criticism when things are looked into, in time. What a horrible thing to have potentially got wrong.

Trulywonderful · 02/01/2024 01:02

Only just seen this thread. I think most people are now just looking at the threads they are on plus bisy with Christmas/New Year, kids off school etc. Most the threads seem more quiet in the least few days as well. I suppose some also going to try and not to be on mumsnet as much in 2024. Those resolutions don't normally last long. You may get more uptake in a few days time. Should perhaps bump the thread up a couple of times then if still quiet.

LolaSmiles · 02/01/2024 19:41

They do not blame Palestinians for the actions of Hamas, not do they blame Israeli citizens who are mandated to serve in the Israeli army for the decisions of Netanyahu's government.
I feel awful for Israeli citizens who are caught up like this. There seems to be a lot of different views within Israeli society, and not everyone agrees with the land grabbing and violence of illegal settlements or the government's approach.

Independent of the recent conflict, part of me has sometimes wondered whether the right wing politicians and media add fuel and propaganda to an already intensely messed up situation to try and maintain a steady stream of willing hearts and minds who will embrace their military service, or at the very least to reduce the chances of civilians rising up and saying "enough". Having to be conscripted and then on reserve for several decades after must be awful for people who know how hostile the situation is and yet they spend their adult lives at the mercy of someone in government not doing something stupid.

Edit to add - I agree with the OP that the Palestinian civilians and Israeli citizens deserve peace. They're caught up as victims in someone else's games.

yes agree with this. I will always support innocent civilians from both sides caught up in this.
