Part 3.

I hope they come home soon and there's no need for a part 4.

Hamas have said they would release all the hostages in exchange for a permanent ceasefire and withdrawal of IDF from Gaza, Netanyahu has rejected that.

I'd imagine the Israeli position is that Hamas retaining control of Gaza post-conflict is too much of an ongoing security risk for Israel.

XRAYTHIS · 24/01/2024 12:15

Wow well done them.

Much better than the protests in the west which are divisive.

That's the sort of protest I'd support.

Exactly. People like to frame it as though the pro-Palestinians want peace and the pro-Israelis want war. That's just not the case. Everyone wants peace, it's just that a lot of us want a sustainable peace, which isn't possible as long as Hamas and other terrorists are still around and in charge. Terrorists will just keep taking hostages whenever they feel like it.

SomeCatFromJapan · 24/01/2024 12:30

Those Palestinian protesters are really brave. Unlike in Israel where people can protest legally, there are potentially grave consequences for them. They really really deserve a better future.

EllaDisenchanted · 24/01/2024 12:48

Wow, that must have taken courage!

This has been reported rather differently elsewhere - see below

A group of Palestinians in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah have protested in support of an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The demonstration marked a rare show of protest in the devastated and besieged Palestinian territory, where people are struggling to get by amid the war and humanitarian crisis, AP reported.

Demonstrators, mostly women and children, chanted: “People want to end the war” and “We want to go back to the north (of Gaza).” One sign carried by a young girl read: “Yes to returning the prisoners”.

The protest was seized on by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson who said it was evidence that Palestinians were demanding that Hamas release the hostages taken during the 7 October attacks to end the war.

However there was no indication the protesters directed their demonstration at Hamas specifically, AP wrote. A poll published last month showed Palestinian support in Gaza for Hamas has risen since the war erupted.

I haven't yet seen any indication of which 3 hostages this refers to.

OK, it's Daniella Gilboa, Karina Ariev, and Doron Steinbrecher.

Judging by the before photos and those from the video (top row) the video must have been made weeks ago.

Latest on the hostage negotiations

Joe Biden spoke on Friday with his Egyptian and Qatari counterparts ahead of a trip to Europe by the CIA director, William Burns, to seek a deal to secure the release of more hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

Burns and his Israeli counterpart, Mossad head David Barnea, will meet Qatari officials in coming days for talks on a second potential Gaza hostage deal and pause in fighting, according to reports. The US and Israeli intelligence chiefs have previously met Qatari and Egyptian officials, helping to broker a short-lived truce in November that saw more than 100 hostages freed. Burns’ trip comes after a visit to the region by White House senior envoy Brett McGurk this week. The White House said however that there are no “imminent developments” on an agreement over a hostage release.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 29/01/2024 18:07

On i24 but source quoted is Channel 12.

War cabinet to discuss offer of:

45 days of truce for the release of 35 hostages In the initial phase

the release of 100-250 terrorists per hostage, including ‘heavy’ murderers

In total, this amounts to 4,000-5,000 terrorists released, marking the highest number in the history of the conflict

It's insane.

@StarbucksSmarterSister I agree.

EllaDisenchanted · 29/01/2024 20:50

I can’t see the Israeli public accepting this. Sinwar was released in the shalit deal, and that’s very fresh in everyone’s mind still.

Efacsen · 30/01/2024 07:46

It's difficult to know if any of this is realistic as Qatar are only currently presenting it to Hamas who most recently said ceasefire first then negotiations

quantumbutterfly · 30/01/2024 08:01

It's an obviously unrealistic demand, extreme haggling. But there is some precedent..

compare and contrast..Israel exchange large numbers of people for each 1 of their own, hamas allow the destruction of Gaza and murder of innocents when they could stop it by releasing hostages and laying down arms.

Efacsen · 30/01/2024 09:57

Qatar-based Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh has said he will visit Cairo for discussions on a ceasefire proposal formulated in Paris

Reuters quotes Haniyeh saying Hamas has received the proposals, and that its priority is for ending the Israeli military offensive and for Israel’s troops to pull out of Gaza.

IDK the Israeli government said they were looking into the claims that they were deceased but didn't see any further announcements about their findings

Sadly it's impossible to know isn't it

Cailleachian · 31/01/2024 08:47

The exchange of 100 palestinian hostages for each israeli hostage is a fair offer, although must be accompanied by an agreement of no further hostage taking on either side.

Israel have taken over 6000 hostages SINCE 7th October. The youngest I am aware of is 5 months but there are numerous children and at least one other baby.

SomeCatFromJapan · 31/01/2024 08:48

@Cailleachian Do you have some links you can share that support what your post says?

Cailleachian · 31/01/2024 10:34

The precise number of hostages taken since Oct 7th is 6330 source is Al Jazeera, At least 21 of them are medics. Some hostages have been forced to say that they will be slaves for the families of the soldiers, and it appears others have been executed

Figures for the number of child hostages is unclear, but the youngest I can find is Zain Alzaza (6 months) who was abducted along with his parents and 5 year old brother. His father has now been released, but his mother is still being held, there is no news of either of the children, however the age of the baby that was kidnapped by Haral Itah is unknown and there are a number of other reports of very young children being snatched.

Just yesterday, IDF forces held a 15 year old and a 6 year old hostage in a car, after shooting all the adult occupants. They then shot the 15 year old while she was on the phone to the Red Crescent. The last known contact with Hind, was that stray animals were attacking the car, while she was trapped with guns trained on her, she then lost contact, rescue teams were unable to reach her and her whereabouts are currently unknown.
