Why Can't Gazans Leave?

miniaturepixieonacid · 04/12/2023 13:25

There is probably a very simple answer to this that I missed in early news reports.

It's so awful watching News Feeds that essentially seem to say that Gazans are having to move around in a cat and mouse game with the IDF to avoid bombs but have nowhere left to go.

I am very aware that war has casualties and other countries are at war. I am not necessarily saying that IDF should stop fighting.

But this war is different in that all civilians seem to be trapped. Normally war creates refugees. Ukrainians, Afghans, Syrians - they were able to get out. Not all, I know, but movement was an option and it kept civilian casualties down. Why can't Gazans leave Gaza?

I found this explanation

In the first weeks of its war on Gaza, Israel used its most destructive bombs - the terrifying 2,000-pound, United States-made MK-84 ordnance - in areas it called "safe" for civilians and along evacuation routes it claimed were "safe" for innocent Gazans to travel to escape bombing, according to Artificial Intelligence-backed analysis of visual evidence by The New York Times and CNN.
These bombs, the Times said, were used at least 200 times and that "... even for those who followed every evacuation order, there was still no safety to be found".
Both publications cited military experts as saying bombs of that size "are almost never dropped... in densely-populated areas". And Gaza is one of the most densely populated in the world, with over two million people cramped into a 362 square kilometre strip of land. In fact, given the potential impact of such weapons, international humanitarian law prohibits indiscriminate bombing.
CNN quoted Marc Garlasco, a former war crimes investigator for the United Nations, as saying the ferocity of Tel Aviv's bombing in the first month of the war "had not been seen since Vietnam".

@Parkingt111 please don't trouble yourself on my behalf - internet will hopefully recover at some point

I read somewhere that the flying shrapnel is the main cause of the many amputations

Parkingt111 · 24/12/2023 13:06

@stomachameleon even with the war in Iraq the US only used this type of bomb ONCE, that is how destructive it is.

Israel has used it atleast 200 times! Even in safe zones. How can anyone defend this

Parkingt111 · 24/12/2023 13:09

@efacsen yes I think I read similar from DR Ghassan too. When the IDF were asked about the use of these bombs they said these questions will be looked into after the war.
It is indefensible

stormy4319trevor · 24/12/2023 13:16

@Parkingt111 @Efacsen Thank you for posting about the use of these weapons. It really raises the question of why use something so destructive and harmful to anyone in the vicinity. Thank you both for faithfully posting on as well. It's hard not to be disheartened but important to still care, even though it's painful.

Efacsen · 24/12/2023 13:17

I'm sorry to be gross but how can it be possible to retrieve bodies and count the dead when the bodies are so torn apart? Must have some ?unknown impact on mortality figures

stormy4319trevor · 24/12/2023 13:19

@Efacsen I think there are quite a lot under rubble or unaccounted for.

paladium · 24/12/2023 13:20

@Efacsen I have no idea. I wonder if they have to count on reports of missing people based on family reports or who lived there and tally it up somehow.

Parkingt111 · 24/12/2023 13:30

@Efacsen as far as from what I read the death toll is for accounted deaths, which is why there is a great possibility that the actual figures are much much higher.

I think it was the Scottish PM Humza Yousuf who said his brother in law is a doctor in Gaza and at the start of the war, one of the things he frequently had to do was try and piece which body parts belong to which bodies. At this stage I'm not sure if they still do that as many of the deceased are now buries in mass graves.
Nobody knows how many have died under the rubble as they have not been able to retrieve all the bodies.

Parkingt111 · 24/12/2023 13:38

I recently went to a event which was to raise awareness about what is happening in Gaza. There was a huge long banner that took up the space of almost the whole wall. In tiny writing it had the name of all the martyrs recorded up to that time
It included
• full name
• Age
• ID number

There was thousands of little children which included many who were under 5.
Seeing all the names in one place was certainly eye opening. From the surnames you could see that there were many members of entire families who have been killed.

MercanDede · 24/12/2023 13:45

That is heartbreaking @Parkingt111. I think I read that more Palestinian babies were killed by IDF on October 7th than were killed by Hamas on October 7th. That by October 8th, it’s just been more and more dead babies. I know babies is emotive because they are not the only innocents in war and all wars kill babies, but it does seem so pointless to fight terror with far more terror. It then crosses into vengeance. It’s well beyond the eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, life for a life parity of loss type of revenge allowed in biblical terms.

Parkingt111 · 26/12/2023 16:19

Unbelievable that once again the strikes were carried out in areas that civilians were told to move to

We are gravely concerned about the continued bombardment of middle Gaza by Israeli forces, which has claimed more than 100 Palestinian lives since Christmas Eve.
It is particularly concerning that this latest intense bombardment comes after Israeli forces ordered residents from the south of Wadi Gaza to move to Middle Gaza and Tal al-Sultan in Rafah.
The Israeli Air Force reportedly carried out more than 50 strikes across middle Gaza on 24-25 December, including on three refugee camps, al-Bureij, al-Nuseirat, and al-Maghazi.

Parkingt111 · 26/12/2023 16:25

A total of 241 deaths reported in the last 24 hours
Bodies are once again being buried in mass graves

Parkingt111 · 26/12/2023 16:30

241 deaths in the last 24 hours
Countless more injured
And many more dead or dying under the rubble.

And that is just the last 24 hours.

MissyB1 · 26/12/2023 17:09

I am beyond furious that the world is tolerating this slaughter day in and day out 😡

Parkingt111 · 26/12/2023 21:17

@MissyB1 not only tolerating but justifying it

Livinginanotherworld · 26/12/2023 23:34

I can see how these poor kids get radicalised, they have nothing left, they now have to fight for survival, they will become the resistance as they get older, who wouldn’t having lived through these shockingly awful atrocities, I can’t find words to fully describe what they are living through. I can’t understand why the west stand idly by, funding and cheering it on, it’s truly sickening. Nobody, absolutely nobody should be supporting the Israeli government’s slaughtering of innocent men, women and children. You stand with Israel, you stand with genocide.

stomachamaleon · 27/12/2023 00:44

@Livinginanotherworld every single person in Israel? Don't be ridiculous. How is that constructive? Why don't you read the ama from someone actually living in Israel at the moment rathe than throwing 'from the safety is my couch' sound bites.
Honestly.

How do you mean ? Are you referring to another post ? I don’t think I said everyone living in Israel, I meant everyone living full stop. Nobody should be standing up for all this killing, nobody. There is no justification for it at all, none!

The aid agency Save the Children says Gaza is now the world's most dangerous place to be a child.
More children have died in this war than in all the world's major conflicts combined over the last three years.

You're right and this is a great post.

People are either deluded or being disingenuous if they believe the UK wouldn't hunt down the culprits after such a vicious attack on innocent civilians. Especially when many are STILL held hostage (Being raped, starved and tortured - if they're lucky, killed and put out of their misery).

It's that simple.

TBF i was working in London when the IRA was bombing the 'city, the IRA killed over 3000 in total, they blew up the British Government, they blew up people at memorial services, people inc soldiers were kidnapped, they attacked and murdered members of the Royal family, they murdered two soldiers "live" on TV.

Yes the British did try and hunt down the terrorists but they used special forces, intelligence led strikes...... they didn't use WW2 tactics and indiscriminate bombing, nor did they starve out West Belfast or attempt to get the Catholics to move to the ROI.

Israel is using every trick in the book to try and defend what they are doing, which is murder, they are committing war crimes, ignoring every rule written about protecting civilian populations in a war zone, they behaving worse than even the Russians in Ukraine.

The only reason they wont be held accountable for these crimes, is the Americans will block any investigation or trial.

Parkingt111 · 27/12/2023 18:02

@Parker231 I'm not surprised in the least to hear that sadly
That doesn't even include how many more have been injured included life changing injuries and amputations

Yes I remember all that too. You are absolutely right and I’ve been pointing the same thing out to everyone I know. There is no justification for the genocide as far as I’m concerned.

Another 90,000 people being forcibly evacuated from central gaza - Rafah is already more than full with more than half the population living there

Twice this week the Israeli gov has spoken of the inhabitants of gaza 'migrating' to other countries [Netanyahu] and yesterday of removing the de-militarised zone between gaza and egypt to allow people to spread into sinai

El Sisi currently still holding firm that this will not be happening
