Dispatches from the opposition to antisemitism march

Just wondered if anyone had seen this video that Konstantin from Triggernometry has put out reflecting on Sunday’s opposition to antisemitism march? I was there with my mum and my four month old baby (little fella was in the carrier). We’re not Jewish, though my son has a Jewish Nonna from Rome.

I thought it was a great day and Konstantin has captured the spirit and energy of the event really well.

I made the same observation about the presence of British flags . I heard someone at the march behind me mention it too, why they are included at this march but not so much at the pro-Palestine ones (I think that’s right, but tell me otherwise if I’m mistaken).

Good to see many Iranian flags and participants too. I think it’s important to elevate the voices of these brave people who oppose the existing regime in Iran, particularly in light of its ongoing support and sponsorship of Hamas.

Just a side note, I’m really glad that the former EDL leader was expelled from the march (I won’t mention him by name). This was a peaceful event and as such, extremists were definitely not welcome!

Looking forward to comparing and contrasting the reflections on next week’s pro-Palestine rally from Konstantin (or Francis). Should be illuminating!

A very interesting video.
Thank you.

I saw that video. I can't bear anti-Semitism (I'm also not Jewish) and I can't bear what has been happening to the innocents in Gaza. So I'm actually very sympathetic to both marches. But I wouldn't feel comfortable attending either, no matter how peaceful, because of all the flags. I'm Northern Irish born to NI parents. I grew up in England from age two. But return to visit regularly. In NI, flag waving can be so contentious that I've almost become allergic to it!
Palestinian flags at one demo, and Israeli flags at the other. I can't pick a side like that, as I feel so genuinely sorry for all the innocent human beings caught up in the current horror. I've heard there's a general coming-together peace vigil on December 3rd. I'd dearly love to attend, but booked up that day already. I'll listen out for another one.
I'm so glad to hear the march you attended was peaceful OP. I send my love to all the Jewish people on here, and to all Palestinians/Muslims/Arabs on here too. I'm very sympathetic to all of you, and the hard time you're having x

I saw that about the peace vigil but I couldn't post a link.

Sympathy is good! Let's be honest though, Palestinians were living in peace until they were occupied illegally by Israel. The apartheid state is inhumane and unjust.

Oh just go away.
I notice you made no comment on the vigil for peace.

The man who said Israel is kind, I genuinely unsure how bombing children in the dark for over 40 days is kind🤷‍♀️

Do you analyse the Palestine marches
With such scrutiny?
Your motive is clear.

4get2 · 29/11/2023 08:59

Whilst I support those who speak up against antisemitism I also support those who speak up against genocide.

Murdering more than 20,000 innocent civilians is not ok.

Bingo!

4get2 · 29/11/2023 09:22

Hate towards occupation is not hate towards Jews.

Many Jews oppose the occupation, many Jews attend the "End the Genocide" march.

No person should be subjected to harassment due to their religious preferences or their nationality.

Palestinians are subjected to daily ethnic cleansing as the world watches in horror.

They do not hate Jews, they hate being illegally occupied, dumhumanised and subjected to countless human rights violations.

pickledandpuzzled · 29/11/2023 09:29

@4get2 when you start from that position, there is no resolution possible.

We have to start from the position of two homeless peoples. Both needing security and peace. None should be expelled or killed or raped. Only when that’s the starting point can we approach resolution.
For as long as you are partisan, there is no way out. It’s the pro Palestine comments on here that have actually pushed me further towards the Israeli side- despite my initial suspicion of Israel.

If you allowed a homeless person into your property now, will it be peaceful solution if we just let them occupy as many rooms as they like and subject you to unbelievable persecution?

Also the Palestinians are not homeless, they have lived in Palestine for thousands of generations.

pickledandpuzzled · 29/11/2023 10:37

@4get2 Palestinians have lived for generations on lots of land around that area. They are only trying to eradicate the Israeli area, where Jewish people also lived for generations. No one ethnic group owns that land.

I’m really suspicious of anyone who claims that one side of this is righteous and the other is not. If it were that obvious and straight forward it could have been resolved already. The only answer is compromise.

Attempts at compromise seem to be undermined.

MiffyAtTheGallery · 29/11/2023 12:12

@4get2 I’m asking you as respectfully as I can, please leave this thread and do not post again. It’s not for you, ok. This was to discuss the anti-racism march that took place on Sunday.

I also suggest that you open a history book for the first time in your life. You sorely need to.

What does that have to do with the OP?

I think you need to read up on some history. Gaza is not occupied by Israel. Israel withdrew over 20 years ago. Hamas took over after defeating Fatah and it has been their dictatorship since. The condition of Gaza is their resposibility.

Rachna83 · 29/11/2023 15:21

I think when you start a thread in the way the OP has you are putting 2 sides against each other from the outset. Both marches are a legitimate expression of freedom of speech and I can't fathom why there seems to be a real motive by some on here to compare and contrast the 2. What are you trying to achieve. To try and show one was better then the other or more peaceful? I really don't see the point.

quiteoldad · 29/11/2023 15:21

I watched the entire video and it was a very good example of "echo chamber" reportage, in that the line of questioning and the reponses that were selected followed what was almost certainly a pre-defined narrative. The video was speaking to those who already thought the same as the presenter. It held very few surprises and offered little in the way of new information. When I started watching I was hoping that I might gain some other views or insights, or some suggestions or explanations, but there were few.

It certainly couldn't be regarded as journalism. Considering it was a march about antisemitism there was an awful lot about Israel and the reporting of the conflict and save a few experiences of it, very little about people who had experienced antisemitism itself.

It would have been a great place to have done some proper journalism. Asking if they believed criticism of Israel and antisemitism are one and the same ? Why do you believe people are antisemitic? Do you believe the media to be antisemitic ? (The video touched upon the BBC being biased, but dared not used the "A"-word in that context.) How do you respond to the allegation that Jewish people are using antisemitism as a weapon against anyone they perceive to be critical of Israel? Can a Jewish person be an antisemite ? Is antisemitism universal or are there other countries where Jews feel safer? Which countries are best at tackling antisemitism? How much of a worry is antisemitism for you? What does it stop you doing ? How can we tackle antisemitism ?

Those are just a few that immediately came to mind and I would have been interested to hear the answers.

So as an enlightening video, from which I came away with something new, probably 1 out of 10.

He mentioned that he will be recording a pro Palestine march next week. It'll be interesting to see who they choose to keep in the edit. Will those in the final cut all come across as reasonable protestors or will he just seek out the swivel-eyed ranters ?
We shall see.

I didn't even bother watching the video as I could tell from the OP post exactly how it was going to play out. So well done for providing a review.

Fact: At present, based on the result of numerous UN resolutions that cite Article 49 of the Geneva Convention, the consensus view of the international community is that Israeli settlements are illegal and constitute a violation of international law.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but wouldn't it be better to start a new thread about the legality of Israel's presence in the West bank?

Pennina · 29/11/2023 19:31

Is the peace vigil a joint thing? Ie both 'sides'?
