yehudis lifshitz still remains committed to peace - her daughter sharone said when she saw her mother shake Hamas hands and say shalom, she believed her mother’s values remain unshaken.

I agree

Oh my God this is so sad. IDF killed 3 hostages, immediately confirming it was their mistake.

They were spotted in an area where 20 soldiers have been killed. It sounds like they may have escaped, only to be shot by the IDF who thought they were Hamas.

Just tragic.

How tragic. Alive still until that point.
If only more were explained. What was the context and where were they?

That's tragic.

A very highly charged and challenging situation always thinking you might get shot so shooting quickly.

Awful.

Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari quoted as saying “during combat in Shejaiya [northern Gaza], the IDF mistakenly identified three Israeli hostages as a threat. As a result, the troops fired toward them and they were killed.”

Full investigation to follow.

This was further added on BBC

The IDF says troops fired on the hostages in the northern town of Shejaiya after they were mistakenly identified as a threat.
During subsequent searches and checks in the area, "suspicion arose over the identities of the deceased", the statement says, and their bodies were transferred to Israeli territory for examination.
The statement says "immediate lessons from the event have been learned" and passed on to all IDF troops in the field.

How devastating for the families. Everyday all we hear is innocent lives being lost

stomachameleon · 15/12/2023 20:05

I have seen some pictures of what led to them being shot and what led the soldiers to believe they were Hamas including clothing, dolls with Hebrew voices and crying. Children's clothes and backpacks. It was on insta.

It's barbaric and I hope this is not weaponised where the IDF are concerned. Those soldiers will have to carry the guilt of this and those hostages should never have been there.

I too have read about the Hebrew voices, intended to lead IDF soldiers into tunnels and the booby-trapped dolls and backpacks laid in the ambush.

But I think this accidental shooting was not directly part of one of those ambushes, though the tension and danger all around must certainly have been a factor. I think nine IDF soldiers were recently killed in an ambush in a building.

BBC or Channel 4 tonight had an interview with an IDF commander who explained the hostages were wearing the same sort of Palestinian civilian clothes that some Hamas wear who also have guns and grenades; and only just before the IDF had been in combat with Hamas.

It is so tragic for the hostage’s families. Imagine knowing they had managed to survive until now but all for this. I agree too that it is dreadful that the soldiers will have to carry that guilt all their lives.

PeasfullPerson · 15/12/2023 21:46

So much sadness and death. I don’t suppose it will be much consolation to the families that their loved ones were valued enough to be referred to by name. Peace seems so far away.

stomachameleon · 15/12/2023 21:52

I am sure for the families who have been bereft since their loved ones were abducted and taken from them forcibly it is scant consolation. They shouldn't have been there.

Update on Sky News

Israelis held hostage (part 2)
stomachameleon · 16/12/2023 14:53

It's a shame the news seem more interested in this than the holding of hostages themselves.

If they hadn't been taken they wouldn't have been there.

I continue to think of the families and the soldiers who will be forever racked with guilt.

Sirens in our area and booms from rockets as Shabbat came in. Shrapnel fell over the petrol station, but thank Gd didn’t explode.

@StarbucksSmarterSister I’m hearing her body still being held in Gaza, as her family are sitting shiva, but no levaya as no body to bury.
