Shocked by the racist signs at marches

Maybe I’m just severely naive but I’m honestly just shocked at the levels of racism of some of the signs at these marches. It’s just caught me really, really off guard.

and my bug bear is the repetitive behaviour on multiple threads by other “bad faith actors” who consistently and baselessly accuse anyone with an opposing view or challenge they don’t like of being a “Jew hater” or “antisemite”. That one’s gotten really irritating too.

Yes, it does go both ways.

Thereissomelight · 15/11/2023 09:08

I’m seeing a lot more Islamophobia on these threads than antisemitism.

I would take your point if the poster was something she presented in school, absolutely. But this was a march, not a school, and her poster was a specific reference to the political leadership and its attitude to both Gaza and towards that leadership's position on the rights of its citizens to protest. Having a beer at school would be unprofessional in education too, but we would not arrest a teacher for having a drink at the pub on a weekend.

Edited

Having a drink at the weekend is very different to going out at the weekend and waving a racist banner.

As for whether the fact that she didn't think she was being racist would wash, it didn't in the case of this politician

The big problem I see is that every time Jewish people post that their worries about the increase in anti- semitism, so many people try to shut us down. They say it's not happening. They say they don't see it. They don't believe us.

People tend not to see an issue that doesn’t affect them directly. Like a man saying he’s never seen any sexual harassment happen. Maybe some people are trying to shut you down but I would imagine a lot are just oblivious.

noblegiraffe · 15/11/2023 09:26

People were falling over themselves to say that antisemitic placards weren't actually antisemitic when they blatantly are.

Sugaristheenemy · 15/11/2023 10:34

Do you mean on the other thread? I can’t really comment as I didn’t read it all.
If people are that blatant then, yes, it’s obvious. I was talking more about people reading sinister meanings into more ambiguous statements.

Focusing on Israel’s mistakes is not necessarily sinister pro Hamas/antisemitic ploy any more than focusing on October 7 is an anti Palestinian/Islamophobic ploy.

Also it’s not just the Israelis who get the blame for Hamas. There was a poster on another thread who was trying to argue that it was Palestinian civilians who perpetrated a lot of the attacks on October 7 because the people in the video footage didn’t look like members of Hamas (weren’t wearing their headbands I guess)

Not normally the case but yes on this particular thread I found some of the early posters made some shocking posts.

We didn't have that with the other thread from what I could see. Hands up I didn't read every last post on it but what I did wasn't like this thread at all. The level of Jew hate on that one was the issue. I do wonder if this thread was started for some iffy reasons if I am honest. Hence why I avoided posting on it when I saw the he ugliness.

Indeed. I can't believe the casual, vile racism being spewed out and ALLOWED against Jewish people, it's been horrific. The jeering from Muslims in videos on youtube, the laughing when t hey're holding fake dead Jewish babies, the mocking of Jewish people to their faces..I mean, if I hadn't seen the videos, I couldn't believe so many people could be so happily, joyously racist against Jewish people, who've done absolutely nothing to them. "Awwww, are your babies dead? Are your relatives dead?" and queue mocking laughter. I mean, it's just utterly disgusting and evil.

Hi @YouJustDoYou I agree. And this is what it looks like when the other side does it (these TikTok videos went viral in Israel):

@Trulywonderful For people who are Muslim, what you are saying about Hitler’s propaganda against the Jewish people is exactly how Muslims feel about the propaganda against them that is entrenched from Hollywood films where all Muslims are either oppressed or just straight-up terrorists, to now, most recently, the prime minister giving unreserved approval for Muslims to be slaughtered in their thousands, as well as sending the RAF and Navy to protect the far-right government who are doing it.

Imagine if the shoe was on the other foot and your government also then actively supported and blocked the country slaughtering from being tried in the ICC for their war crimes, the country that was killing thousands of Jewish people, starving them, depriving them of medical aid, of clean water, of dignity as their bodies pile up, and their children die slowly under the rubble.

You would feel beyond hurt. Beyond angry. Beyond lost in the country that you were born in.

These marches are an outlet for Muslims to come together with other people who have the empathy and kindness for the Palestinians.

Muslims seeing threads like this, bashing the marches, smearing them as racist despite it being 1 million people at the march and only ~50 people who were arrested, causes terrible upset and pain.

They then read the posts on the thread and it has quickly devolved into a Muslim hate thread - how do you think that feels for them? It is pain on top of pain on top of pain.

I am not saying that you don’t have a right to feel pain, too, but do not speak of empathy whilst exercising so little yourself.

"These marches are an outlet for Muslims to come together with other people who have the empathy and kindness for the Palestinians."

I am genuinely curious - why is it for Muslims? I thought the marches were calling for a ceasefire - and who are these "other people". It feels as though if you think the default position is for Muslims to march which makes it a religion issue. I thought it was for peace.
