There's a lot of misinformation/propaganda spreading around and this thread is to raise awareness of the ones circulating. Here's one for example:

Please share any you come across.

Well that was quite a fumble wasn't it. No idea who that is but guessing he isn't normally a public speaker. What an idiotic thing to say. It does make you question what people say at home and if this is what he really thinks.

What a fucking idiot. How embarrassing for him and all those cheering him on. He’s not even forming complete sentences to spread his hate. He may as well have just stood there and chanted “hate hate hate” over and over and had the same reaction.

But back to the topic at hand, it is obvious there is going to be misinformation being spread during a conflict, especially in the social media era. But the access to information at the tips of our fingers also means that it is very easy to check multiple sources for the same stories in order to verify information.

Personally, I choose to take my information from people on the ground first and headlines second. Gazan journalists like Hind Khoudary and Bisan, amongst others, are all reporting live from the ground. It’s not difficult to read between the lines and see what is happening, particularly when you cross reference this with mainstream media sources.

On the other hand, I have found it difficult to find first-hand Israeli accounts on social media to compare with others. The only things I seem to find are good-looking IDF soldiers doing TikTok dances. If anyone can point me in the direction of some first-hand accounts I can cross-reference with, it would be appreciated.

Edit: the formatting won’t allow me to type Hind and Bisan’s X and IG handles correctly because of the underscores. Here are links to their profiles instead, if anyone is interested:

Hind’s X account: https://x.com/hind_gaza?s=21

Bisan’s IG account: https://www.instagram.com/wizard_bisan1/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==

There is also an account on X which is keeping track of the Gazan journalists and when they last posted, in case anything happens to them. That account is: https://x.com/hausofriya?s=21

This is absolutely disgraceful.

If I were TerryPrachette I would ask Mumsnet to ban you permanently.

TerryPrachette is a long term, very decent poster who, unlike you, always engages on the merit of the argument and never attacks the person.

Shame on you.

Well that's funny, because she has personally attacked me on another thread (yesterday). And, among other wild accusations, told me I'd never posted on MN before! It was disappointing, as I recognise and respect her name from threads we've both contributed to. There was me thinking that all these words, my drops of wisdom were being compiled into a little volume that MN would one day offer to readers as a Xmas recommendation. Ah well.

I like your "Hyacinth Bouquet" interpretation of her name, BTW! Prachette sounds rather refined.

Israel revised its official estimated death toll of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, lowering the number to about 1,200 people, down from the more than 1,400 initially cited, a spokesman for the country's Foreign Ministry said on Friday night.

In other news, I have just seen (firstly on social media, and then cross-referenced with mainstream media) that Keir Starmer is set to sack MPs from his shadow cabinet who are backing a ceasefire. This is a mess.

See, I'm pro-Israel and whatever, but I'll never understand why what's going on in the ME is of such importance to the UK that politicians are being fired for their opinions. Why can't they just state their opinions but then go on with working for their own country? I honestly will never understand it. They might want a ceasefire but will they also help fight poverty in their own back yard? If so, keep them in

I have to say, I'm not sure this is purposeful misinformation. I think they genuinely thought it was 1400 but as they're getting through the mountains of bodies, they're finding they were wrong. I guess some were so badly brutalised they looked like they were multiple bodies 😔 Can't even begin to imagine what a state their bodies must be in for the number to reduce like that.

noblegiraffe · 15/11/2023 10:01

I think the explanation was that some of the bodies turned out to be Hamas not Israeli.

My guess is there are financial interests involved.

The BBC have just reported that the IDF have entered the hospital and are targeting Arab speakers and medics.

This is misinformation, according to the Reuters report that the BBC were supposedly quoting, the IDF were bringing in Arab speakers and medics.

Sorry, what has thay got to do with the anti-Semitic blog you posted? You'll have to explain.

What does Likud want? How are AIPAC different from any other lobbying group? What exactly are you trying to say here?

I've read that the IDF have been loads of non stop shooting, shooting at anything that moves, partitions being torn apart, destroying walls between rooms. They've so far taken 30 people and blindfolded them leaving them in the courtyard.

This is a thread about misinformation, so are you saying that those reports aren't true?

whatswrongwiththeworldddd · 15/11/2023 10:33

How disgusting is this.

The Israeli occupation shares a photo of them helping an elderly Palestinian for them to go and kill him minutes after.

You seem to have the wrong thread. The BBC was misquoting the Reuters report that they were referring to. It wasn't about 'reporting differently', it was about reporting incorrect information.

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 15/11/2023 10:44

Did anyone see the findings of a list of the names Hamas soldiers that were guarding the hostages? Turned out to be a calendar for shift patterns in the hospital.

Misinformation is everywhere, all the time, no matter what “side” you are on. We have information in our hands these days to fact check; can you imagine how much shit we’ve been fed over the years without the resources to quickly verify that we have now?

Oh really? Care to provide any proof of that whatsoever? This thread is meant to be about calling out misinformation, not spreading it.

@noblegiraffe your explanation makes more sense. I guess that proves a lot of them were either dressed as civilians or, in fact, were civilians who decided to join in the massacre

Hence the words “my guess” and not phrasing said guess as fact. I’m not usually one to call out others’ reading comprehension skills but you really walked right into that one.

Do you feel better now having been rude to an anonymous stranger on the internet?

So glad you think you have come up with some really clever conspiracy all on your own, despite you clearly just writing something you saw on here a couple of days ago. What politicians in the UK do you think are the ones who will profit in all this?

noblegiraffe · 15/11/2023 11:22

Obviously no politician is ever going to state “I don’t want a ceasefire because it means I won’t get my money”, and I can’t conceive any other logical reason for politicians trying to actively prevent other politicians from voting for a ceasefire.

The way you wrote it implied that individual politicians were taking bribes from Israel. Saying "I won't get my money" doesn't help your case in claiming it's about gas in Gaza unless you can point to specific politicians in this case having interests in that area?

As for Labour having a three line whip on Israel and backing Keir Starmer's stance .... it's a loyalty test. If you know anything about the recent history of the Labour Party, you might see why.
