Segev later told a New York Times reporter that he had helped finance the Palestinian Islamist movement as a “counterweight” to the secularists and leftists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Fatah party, led by Yasser Arafat (who himself referred to Hamas as “a creature of Israel.”)

Anyone know why my reply to the poster above was deleted?! I was just pointing out that the poster and Hamas are both lying about Hamas caring about minors and the elderly, as evidenced by one of Hamas' more recent hostage videos.

That guy makes a lot of very "interesting" points on his substack page. The article on the home page is about how "there’s clearly a huge problem with Jewish power and money in the US" and the reason Israel is bombing Gaza is because "Israel, the Jewish state full of Jewish people, obviously has something to do with the thinking, behavior, attitudes, culture, and especially religion of the Jewish people, right?"

His next article is better though.

These threads have been incredibly eye-opening. I’ve always thought of myself as broadly pro-Palestinian. I am firmly in the camp that believes Israeli settlement building to be illegal and I favour a two-state solution based on 1967 borders (or something like them) and think Netanyahu is awful.

However, the naked antisemitism and pro-Hamas stuff that I’ve seen in the last month has actually turned my stomach a bit.

People just can’t seem to resist swastikas, references to Hitler and false equivalencies between a reckless approach to civilian casualties (which, just to be clear, I believe to be wrong and illegal) and the deliberate and systematic murder of 6 million Jews. The Dresden bombing is right there as a much better comparison… but no… every time they reach for the Shoah. Apparently comparing Netanyahu to Churchill doesn’t give them quite the same thrill.

I think I need to step away from this board for a bit. Huge support to everyone trying to bring nuance, factfulness and humanity to these threads in the face of this stuff.

It has the backing of every important government in the world right now.

When I see numbers like 18,600 vs 1,500 I think yeah - just words.

Bernadotte-There was no ceasefire untill October 7. Israel had made several air raids on Gaza, West Bank and even Lebanon several times this year alone. And that's not including all the raids against Palestinians on the ground (remember the Al-Aqsa mosque raid in April?). I quick google search was all it took to find that out.
