So did they quit because they knew they were going to get fired? But they still get a vote?

All MPs get a vote. They've only quit the shadow cabinet, not the Labour Party. And even if they quit the Labour Party they'd still be an MP, just an independent one.

Parkingt111 · 15/11/2023 19:36

@EasterIssland @noblegiraffe thank you for explaining

SomeCatFromJapan · 15/11/2023 19:42

Motion defeated 293-125.

I did think it would be defeated
But 125 is still a significant amount. What do you think

Parkingt111 · 15/11/2023 20:20

Jess Phillips has become the most high profile UK Labour MP to quit the frontbench over party leader Keir Starmer’s stance on Gaza.
Starmer has seen a big rebellion of eight shadow ministers from a total of 56 Labour MPs, who voted with the SNP on an amendment to the king’s speech which called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

I think her resignation letter was very dignified and respectful

I don’t feel I know enough about what this means

Does she still stay with Labour, lose her job etc

Parkingt111 · 15/11/2023 20:42

@EasternStandard sorry I'm not the most knowledgeable in this aspect
Hopefully someone else can explain it

Parkingt111 · 15/11/2023 20:42

@noblegiraffe did give an explanation above if that helps

MajesticWhine · 15/11/2023 20:46

It means she loses her position as a member of the shadow cabinet / opposition. But she keeps her job as an MP. If you are part of the shadow cabinet then on key votes you have to either vote with your leader or resign (or be sacked).
She will take a pay cut back to basic MP salary and will return to the back benches.

CaveMum · 15/11/2023 20:50

@EasternStandard she has quit the Shadow Cabinet position she held but she is still a Labour MP. There are only a finite number of Cabinet/Minister/Junior Minister positions within the Government, and their opposite numbers in the Shadow (the main opposition party, in this case Labour). All other MPs are known as “Backbenchers” as they do not hold any additional jobs over being a constituency MP and therefore sit on the benches at the back of the HoC.

If you are sacked or resign from your Party you can sit as an independent until the next election, or until you’ve grovelled sufficiently to be let back in!

Stomacharmeleon · 15/11/2023 20:53

@CaveMum like mr Corbyn

Jux · 15/11/2023 21:06

Zealotry and xenophobia on both sides.

The vast majority of people on both sides are just like all of us, wanting nice peaceful lives and happy families.

Religion - the worst invention ever.

CaveMum · 15/11/2023 21:30

I’d just add for anyone wanting to understand more about politics/the political process, I really recommend the podcast “The Rest is Politics” with Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart. You don’t have to agree with their own personal politics they are there to offer opinion from both sides of the political spectrum and their motto is “Disagree agreeably”. They put out 2 podcasts a week as standard (they drop emergency pods when there’s a big breaking story) and also run a separate podcast called “Leading” which comes out once a week as an interview with a person in position of leadership - lots of politicians from all over the world and also entrepreneurs, human rights advocates, etc.

Political Currency is in a similar vein (George Osbourne and Ed Balls) though they focus more on economics. Again you don’t have to like their personal positions, but I think it’s our personal responsibility to ensure we listen to different opinions than our own.

CaveMum · 15/11/2023 21:33

Me again! The Rest is Politics also put their podcasts up as videos on YouTube. Rory Stewart did a very good explainer on the Israel/Palestine issue when events first began and in the intervening time they have also interviewed people from both sides, well worth watching/listening to.

Rory Stewart Attempts to Explain the History of Israel-Palestine in 10 Minutes

How did Hamas launch one of the largest invasions on Israeli territory in recent history? What happens now? Will this conflict have geo-political ramificatio...

I don't think so. 293 votes against a ceasefire is quite a strong indicator of sentiment compared to 125. I don't think that 293 MPs are racist and I think it indicates that they consider a ceasefire to be an unacceptable idea at this point as they recognise that Hamas must be eradicated as a ceasefire will allow them to regroup and attack as they promised.

It's a great pity that so many lives are being lost.
