Conflict in the Middle East

I feel really bad for the UK police ATM

Yes, I know that the poor people in Israel and Palestine have it far worse, and we in the UK are lucky. However...

Does anyone else feel bad for the police on the ground who are having to manage an impossible situation with these weekly Isr-Pal protests?

Every interaction seems to be filmed, and every word they speak taken out of context.

If they arrest people, they're too heavy handed. If they let people do as they please, they're accused of allowing racism.

What do people realistically expect them to do?

I wouldn't want to be a police officer at all, it's not particularly well paid, you have to deal with idiots every day and you are I'm danger most days. I'm astonished anyone wants to do it - but thankful!

JustKen · 06/11/2023 13:43

I expect them to follow the law and be politically impartial.

Let's hope.

Beefcurtains79 · 06/11/2023 18:53

For sure. Fuck all the innocent people that will get hurt, and all the honest small businesses that will be ruined eh?

If you don't want the police to try and manage protests then you need to accept the consequences.

Personally I'd allocate somewhere they were allowed to protest and let them get on with it without causing mayhem but it's the mayhem and disruption they want.

Shodan · 06/11/2023 19:20

Yes I feel sorry for the police. Or at least, those who endeavour every day to do their job as it's supposed to be done- with political impartiality and a genuine desire to uphold the law and help the general public stay safe.

Like my DP. I would actually vastly prefer him not to be spat at, hit, kicked and insulted by idiot members of that general public. I would vastly prefer that his superior officers didn't throw him and his fellow officers under the bus every time they think they can gain brownie points from certain groups of the general public. I would vastly prefer that he isn't tarred with the same brush as the corrupt and law-breaking members, of every rank, in the organisation he works for. I would vastly prefer that he didn't have the memories of the results of some of the most hideous crimes and accidents anyone could imagine.

But he chose this profession because he is a good man and he believes, even now, that he can make a difference.

Perhaps during protests police should just stay out of the way. People have the right to protest and if it descends into a bit looting and arson then that's simply a sign of the public unhappiness at the situation.

This isn't serious, is it?

Beefcurtains79 · 06/11/2023 19:21

It is apparently.

unsync · 06/11/2023 19:21

I think you should maybe look who they have on their advisory body.

backtowinter · 06/11/2023 19:20

Simply an observation on people need to be able to protest but we don't trust the police.

You can't expect them to be spat on and have bricks and bottles thrown at them. If you don't want them manhandling the protesters then you need to accept they'll be allowed to go where they want, do as they want.

GirrlCrush · 06/11/2023 19:34

Yes op I share your sentiments too

I used to be in the Met myself. I would hate to return to it now.

kitsuneghost · 06/11/2023 20:09

Yes I do. The get paid shit compared to other public sector. Can't strike and get so much shit put on them.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 06/11/2023 20:18

Yes I do. The two in this clip are both very young. I feel especially for this PC in a hijab being screamed at by a loon who won't even show her face.

What about a 19 year old working class person, who just wants to make a difference to their community by being a police officer? The kind that can't afford to go to uni because they have a family to support? You have no sympathy at all for people like this?

They know the shit show they are joining.

No? I can acknowledge that some parts of the job are difficult, but I don't have sympathy.

At this point, I don't trust them, let alone feel sorry for them.

TheSilverThorn · 06/11/2023 20:52

I wonder what the policing bill is for all these demonstrations.

TheSilverThorn · 06/11/2023 20:54

I do actually feel sorry for them and as much as there is utter hatred currently imagine if we didn’t have them.

emmylousings · 06/11/2023 21:00

Yeah I feel sorry for them, in this situation, they can't do right for doing wrong. It's also creates loads of extra work, when they are already under resourced.

wedonttalkaboutyouno · 06/11/2023 21:06

Yes, I feel sorry for them. In amongst the corrupt officers, there are many who want to do a good job, and do it well. They don’t deserve the abuse they get. And I would feel a lot safer knowing they were there rather than not. I wouldn’t do their job in a million years, and I am very grateful that they (most of them!) do.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 06/11/2023 21:09

I agree OP. It’s easy to criticise but if people had to spend a day in their shoes they’d see it’s harder than they imagine.

If you have 95% “good” police, and 5% bad, and the good ones lie, cover up, and do nothing about the bad ones, 100% of your police are bad.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 06/11/2023 13:49

That you, Suella? Or one of her mates?

🤣🤣🤣

wedonttalkaboutyouno · 06/11/2023 21:33

Well yes, you’re right. But I don’t believe that the entire 95% lie and cover up for others. But then I don’t live in London, and the police don’t seem to be universally bad where I am, so maybe I have a different outlook on the police to some.

Mytholmroyd · 06/11/2023 22:37

Not so now, they are passive to the aggressive and aggressive to the passive. Its a bad long term strategy

That is a really good description @Coveescapee of how they behave now - go after the easy low hanging fruit with a heavy hand and let the violent and criminal people get away with it unless they have no other choice. They are bordering on the pathetic now especially whilst they play identity politics.

travelnorth · 06/11/2023 22:49

I would not want to be one in London for sure.

TeaTowelScowl · 06/11/2023 23:39

To those who are saying the police deserve the abuse they get, how do you feel about the fireworks and petrol bombs thrown at them this weekend in Edinburgh and Glasgow (not Pal-Isr) related?

No. I never feel sorry for the police.

Same.
