and in my opinion it's a direct result of people turning a blind eye to and excusing the horror of hamas and everything they stand for. It's allowed open season on anti Jewish hate. This has happened TODAY in France.

A 80 year old jewish holocaust survivor lady was arrested in Islington, for calling out Israel and calling it a nazi terrorist state for its indiscriminate bombing on Gaza. Is she anti semetic too?

SinnerBoy · 05/11/2023 23:00

Perhaps read the thread (as in read the room suggestion).

It's the nature of conversations to diverge and I'm just following that curve.

But - fair point.

Muslim here from a long line of Muslims. We’re all law abiding British citizens. Disgusted about what Hamas has done. We don’t support Hamas. Never have. Never will. A few of us have gone to protest but that is not because we are antisemitic. Some of us have Jewish friends. Others have Jewish colleagues. We are all keeping in touch with eachother and trying to support as much as we can.

I have noticed a lot of Islamaphobic comments on social media recently. Well, it’s always been there, just how antisemitism has always been there. The average person isn’t Islamaphobic or Antisemitic.

Unfortunately, it’s so easy online to spew hate anonymously. I wish it would stop.

Totally agree with you

I am Jewish and similar to you but opposite have Muslim friends and colleagues.

The truth is we all have a lot in common in many ways, especially when it comes to hate crimes. I know currently this is horrific for Jews but long term it will get pretty serious for Muslims here too.

Do you have a link please @tobeornottobe1 ? I have tried googling, but can't seem to find this story.

tobeornottobe1 · 05/11/2023 23:33

@IClaudine you will be waiting along time for it to come on bbc, it's a video , I have screen shot some pictures from it, I will try to upload. I have seen it on social media platforms also.

Just dropping in for your daily spelling reminder:

Israel not Isreal.

Anti-Semitism not Anti-Semetism.

Are you trying to imply racists are thick @PurpleChrayne 🤔

feralunderclass · 07/11/2023 11:03

@Fallenangelofthenorth Purple is OBSESSED with coming into every thread and using any means possible to distract or shut down any discussion regarding the Palestinian people. I must admit though that Isreal hurts my eyes, I've even seen some of the Jewish posters spelling it this way and being concerned about anti Semetism. However I've no idea if they have any form of SLD, so I would never be so ableist to give a "spelling lesson".

I have seen Zionist Jewish people spell it ‘Isreal’. It’s just a spelling mistake. I have seen pro-Palestinian people write ‘palastain’ etc. Maybe it’s a language thing, a LD thing or just a poor spelling thing. It’s not something who really cares about issues focuses on.

Just letting you know. A ‘pro-Israel’ type comment has been posted under your comment just now on another thread. They refer to ‘anti-Semetic signs’. You might want to pop over and correct their spelling.

@tobeornottobe1
Firstly, she's not a Holocaust survivor. Her family might've been, she wasn't. Interested to know if you genuinely thought she was a Holocaust survivor and just got it wrong or if you were being knowingly misleading?

Secondly, it's unclear what her sign said so impossible to say if she's an anti-semite. If her sign said something anti-semitic then yes, she's an anti-semite. Being Jewish doesn't mean you can't be anti-semitic.

feralunderclass · 07/11/2023 11:55

On here when a Jewish person has been shown to either be against Israeli policy or they express concern over the human rights violations of Palestinians they are either branded antisemitic or "nuts".

Fallenangelofthenorth · 07/11/2023 11:59

Are you Jewish @feralunderclass?

Because you seem to have positioned yourself amongst the top 3 voices of what is and isn't antisemitism on these threads.

I can't read most of it but the sign starts with the words "Nazi Israel".

tobeornottobe1 · 07/11/2023 12:07

@Humdingerydoo

Why can't she be a holocaust survivor?
And somebody posted the link to the video of her above.

Also I didn't realise Jewish people could discriminate against their own self- how does that work?

At no point in the video does she say she's a Holocaust survivor. Did you not watch it?

Why on earth wouldn't a Jew be able to be anti-semitic? All they have to do is say anti-semitic things. You're generally Jewish because your parents were Jewish. That's all it takes. So of course you can hate Jews even though you're Jewish. It's a bit like how I hate my frizzy hair. I didn't choose it, it was just passed down to me. There are also plenty of ultra -orthodox Jews who are anti-semitic because of their belief that other Jews aren't doing it right and therefore don't count. Is this really such a big surprise?

What a bizarre thing to say @Perfectlystill People are marching because they want an end to the bombing and killing of thousands of innocent civilians who are trapped and have nowhere to run.

The vast, vast, vast majority of people attending the marches are doing so peacefully.**

No one is condoning Hamas atrocities. Everyone is appalled by what happened on 7th Oct.

no one is condoning Hamas on the marches?Seriously? What's the weather like on your planet?

No, not Jewish. Not sure where I have positioned myself, other than to point out once that Jewish people don't seem to be able to critisize Israel or sympathize with Palestinians without being labelled as some sort of deviant.

Mollymodel · 07/11/2023 12:32

Massive rise in Islamophobia too.
And the Palestinian Muslim death toll is enormous.

It’s already very difficult for Muslims. Here and in Gaza.

tobeornottobe1 · 07/11/2023 12:51

@Humdingerydoo yes I did watch the video.
I'm asking why she couldn't be? As you didn't watch the video and you stated she couldn't be. So genuinely asking why you said that?

I'm not sure if you saw the bit at the end of the video were she states it's antisemitic to actually assume that Jews are supporting the holocaust in Gaza.
So according you you it would appear to be going around in a circle here, she's discriminating against herself and then flipping it back around again. Sounds like a nauseating funfair ride.

Lampzade · 07/11/2023 12:56

lotus786 · 05/11/2023 01:01

They are not marching in favour of Hamas, they are marching for an end to the brutal bombings of innocent Palestinian civilians who's death toll in 3 weeks is now 9000 people. Many of the Jewish community are also protesting. 5000 children have been slaughtered, if that isn't something to get upset about then I don't know what is.

Exactly
I am sick of those who continue to conflate peaceful protest with support for Hamas.
It is is disingenuous and appears to be done in an attempt to deflect attention away from the bombings in Palestine
As you rightly pointed out many in the Jewish community are also against the bombings.
I have always empathised with the Jewish people and the trauma they have suffered since time immemorial.
I also have empathy for innocent civilians in Palestine who are suffering . This does not mean that I am anti semitic .
However, I do acknowledge that there are a small minority of protesters who are anti semitic.
