Illegal settlements

immigrant002 · 04/11/2023 17:32

I just watched a piece on itv and sky news how Palestinians are abandoning their houses in the west bank as they face severe intimidation by settlers and army forces

The reporter says the settlements are illegal they are universally accepted as illegal so my question is why is nobody doing anything ??
What is the purpose of international law and the UN ? Is it just Israel that gets away with is ?

I just don't see what the point of saying something is illegal but continuing to build more and more settlements for people from
US kicking Palestinians out of their homes ? Why are they getting away with this ?

What settlers giving themselves carte blanche? Ok.

Haven’t they been doing so and being entitled to?

While settlements are expanding, permits for Palestinian homes are almost never granted. And lawyers say demolitions like this are increasing.

Palestinians are also increasingly being forced off their land by violent Israeli settlers - who have been sanctioned by the US and UK, but largely left unchallenged by Israeli courts at home.

Yes, that is a quote from the article but is nothing new. The article is about how some settlers think aTrump victory is good for them but the article points out why Trump may not do what they want. Not sure who is giving who carte blanche, which was the point of your post. Giving yourself carte blanche is not really a thing. Its a meaningless concept.

Scirocco · 10/01/2025 08:40

It's not meaningless when there's a group with members in positions of power, using that power to facilitate the occupation, annexation, torture, oppression and murder of innocent people in their homeland.

Scirocco · 10/01/2025 08:43

It's not meaningless that large chunks of the world don't care and even support it.

You're missing the point. The concept of giving yourself carte blanche is not a thing. Im questioning who the op thinks is giving the settlers carte blanche, what has changed, and how it relates to Trump becoming president.

SharonEllis · 10/01/2025 08:57

The journalist just did the package on the today programme. The point of it was that the settlers CANNOT assume that Trump is giving them carte blanche because his eyes are more likely to be on a wider regional deal, even if he is supportive of them in some respects.

Exactly.

It's such a tragedy what's happening. Where else would these thugs be allowed to steal homes and land from other people and get away with it?

All kinds of places don't have the eyes of the world focussed on them like Israel/Palestine so quite a lot of places. Lots of horrific instances of people being terrorised out of their homes in episodes of ethnic cleansing involving, land, livestock and homes destroyed across parts of Africa in recent years, including Sudan, CAR, Mali, with different levels of 'getting away with it'.

You should probably have clarified that statement with in what other democratic country would these thugs be allowed to steal homes and land from other people and get away with it? Just to limit the whataboutery that predictably followed.

😅 It asn't whataboutery, but a direct, factual response to the question. But reframing the question to get the answer you want is a very familiar MO - just ask Amnesty.

SharonEllis · 10/01/2025 10:25

Personally I care about people suffering in non-democratic countries as much as those in democratic ones and there's no reason why tbe world can't have influence on non-democracies. Its a framing I can't quite get my head around.

It does mainly though diplomatic avenues, majority of work done by the UN and other human rights NGOs, and diplomats from embassies overseas is humanitarian campaigns and education programmes. Also by supporting persecuted citizens through refugee and asylum seeker programmes. What do you feel they should be doing but aren't?

This is a thread about illegal settlements in the West Bank. Im not going to start a conversation about what should have been done about the ethnic cleansing of the Fulani. My point was a legitimate direct answer to a question, not an attempt to start a new conversation. You can start a new thread if you wish.

I'll try again

No need for such a confrontational response, I don't mean to derail was just interested in your opinion. I will cease from engaging with you any further

'Settlers' are giving themselves and their groups powers and resources to achieve these things. There are extremist 'settlers' and their supporters in the government who are driving processes to achieve the aim of eradicating Palestine and Palestinians from the land they see as 'theirs'. They have sufficient support within the government, political systems and Israeli society to progress these processes. In doing so, they are brutally oppressing people. This involves sexual violence, murder, torture, imprisonment, serious physical violence, destruction of people's homes and livelihoods, withholding access to water and food, intimidation and much more. These things are able to happen openly, with minimal consequences for perpetrators.

People in positions of authority around the world are supporting and facilitating this, and the incoming administration in the US is likely to provide even more support. Members of it have openly spoken in support of 'settlers' expanding their activities and expressed that the 'divine right' they cite is of more value than the rights of people actually physically living there under occupation. People closely linked with the administration have openly discussed how taking ownership of the land in Gaza and the West Bank would be financially advantageous for Israel, without any concern for the cost in terms of human life and human rights.

EasterIssland · 10/01/2025 12:49

From the bbc link

Mike Huckabee, nominated as Trump's new ambassador to Israel, signalled his support for Israeli claims on the West Bank in an interview last year.
"When people use the term 'occupied', I say: 'Yes, Israel is occupying the land, but it's the occupation of a land that God gave them 3,500 years ago. It is their land,'" he said.

I don’t expect this person to respect Palestinians in the WB much.

The American Congress is going ever further, with 2 bills introduced in the House and the Senate aiming to remove any references in American government documents to the West Bank replacing it with "Judea and Samaria".

US senator introduces bill to redefine occupied West Bank as 'Judea and Samaria'

Measure would remove all references to the 'West Bank' from US government documents, replacing them with the Israeli name

That's depressing hopefully it won't get passed, it's just taking over the west bank through the back door, normalising the name slowly distancing any claim from Palestinians on the area. Very calculated

Yes very clear what you meant. They have complete freedom to act as they wish. The very definition of carte blanche
