Illegal settlements

I just watched a piece on itv and sky news how Palestinians are abandoning their houses in the west bank as they face severe intimidation by settlers and army forces

The reporter says the settlements are illegal they are universally accepted as illegal so my question is why is nobody doing anything ??
What is the purpose of international law and the UN ? Is it just Israel that gets away with is ?

I just don't see what the point of saying something is illegal but continuing to build more and more settlements for people from
US kicking Palestinians out of their homes ? Why are they getting away with this ?

I see on social media that people are saying the translation is incorrect and he is announcing funding for Israeli areas near Gaza.

I don't speak the language so I don't have a clue either way but I suspect it's a mistranslation.

It's from a pro-Putin x account, I doubt they care about accuracy.

Unconfirmed reports claim clashes started when residents of nearby settlement threw rocks at Palestinian villagers near Nablus; unclear whether fire came from troops or settlers

There has been protests outside a synagogue in LA. Even Biden has criticised them and call them antisemitic.

biden and many are forgetting that the protests were because inside the synagogue there was an event for selling houses in stolen land in Palestine

And the protesters were violently attacked while the police did nothing, too.

“Right now, armed Israeli settlers [who are living in the West Bank against Israeli law and international law] are destroying the pump that brings water to the Palestinian village of Umm Al-Khair south of Hebron. Temperatures will reach 101° tomorrow.”

Even France, one of Israel's allies have criticised Israel for its continuous land grabbing.

Israeli colonization of the Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, constitutes a violation of international law,” says France.

“In addition to being a major obstacle to any just and lasting peace, this policy fuels tensions on the ground as violence perpetrated by settlers increases against the Palestinian population.”

I’ll be honest I know nothing about the politics of settlers in the West Bank but can someone just humour me -

If Israel occupied the West Bank due to the 1967 Six Day War which Israel apparently didn’t start to take over other countries lands, and Jordan refused to take the West Bank back afterwards when Israel tried to give it back, there was no Palestinian state then and nor has one been declared since either, then who exactly is Israel occupying the West Bank from? It was part of Trans Jordan, surely it should be Jordanians who are fighting against Israel occupying it?

That is not to detract from the needless deaths on both sides of this unholy mess.

Anyone?

Have you considered reading about it as well as asking in here ?

DoingTheChaCha · 09/07/2024 23:49

I’ve read lots of conflicting information which still doesn’t make it clear tbh.

From what I’ve read until 1967, people living in the West Bank were under Jordanian rule as Jordan annexed it in 1949, had Jordanian passports and used Jordanian currency. Palestinians weren’t asking for a state independent from Jordan then I believe. Israel captured the West Bank in the six day war (1967) after Jordan joined in the war with Egypt and Syria. For some reason it was never given back to Jordan and they cut ties with it in 1988. Surely Jordan was still responsible for those in the West Bank though?

This is what I don’t understand?

Prior to that it was part of the British Mandate for Palestine and prior to that part of Ottoman Syria.

So who is it occupied from if Jordan didn’t take it back?

Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of one of the founders of Hamas said he lived in Ramallah and everyone had Jordanian passports.

Also from what I’ve read Israel have militarily occupied the West Bank due to its hilly region from which Israel can be easily be bombarded from, into highly populated areas and constant terrorist attacks into Israel. Mosab Yousef, as the son of the founder of Hamas lived in the West Bank and has described working with Israel to prevent terror attacks from the West Bank into Israel so Hamas must be in the West Bank too despite posts I’ve seen saying they aren’t? Wouldn’t Israel have no reason to be there if there was no threat of terrorism into Israel?

I rather thought posters like @EasterIssland, who post a lot on this board might be able to explain more clearly?

The ICJ has ruled that all settlements are illegal, that Israel is under obligation to cease all settlement activities and that all settlements are to be evacuated immediately.

How much more can the Palestinians take?
Breaks my heart, poor souls 💔

Before any of the Zionists on here come at me - yes, I know Jewish people have suffered terrible persecution for centuries too. That's heartbreaking as well.

This thread is about the illegal settlements on The West Bank however, and it's simply inexcusable...

Fantastic news. Let's hope the crazy settlers actually obey this ruling 🙏

One would hope so.
But judging by some of the horrendous settler violence seen in just the last 24 hours, which includes severe physical violence aswell as burning of Palestinian land, I highly doubt it.

They've never obeyed the law before so it's unlikely they'll start now. Also, Israel is a rogue state that doesn't recognise international law when it's applied to them.

I hope so. They won't at first, due to their arrogance and being used to doing whatever they like, but they are under so much more pressure than ever before. The whole world is watching Israel now and it doesn't like what it sees. Israel would crumble underneath all that scrutiny eventually.

It must be a terrifying, soul destroying way to live.

And there's posters on mn who support it all the way. I cant understand it.

Are there? I don't recall seeing support for settlers on the West Bank on mn - could be wrong but I don't think so. We have known those settlements are against international law for a long time. Everyone I know who is loosely 'pro-Israeli' opposes the settlements.

EasterIssland · 19/04/2024 13:37

is this true ? Has he announced settlement in Gaza ? Is he announcing colonising a land that doesn’t belong to him? Was this the reason for the war ?
https://twitter.com/narrative_hole/status/1780838019421077725

No, the war was precpitated directly by the events of October 7.

I haven't seen open support for the violent settlers but there has certainly been support both direct and indirect for the settlements and in turn for the settlers who live there.
