Conflict in the Middle East

Scared to be Jewish

I am not pro-IDF or pro-Hamas, in fact I am very strongly against both. Netanyahu's government is an ultra-right wing aggressive shitshow and Hamas is an "elected" group of cowardly murdering terrorists. I am horrified for all Israeli and Palestinian civilians. I can't even begin to imagine how those poor innocent people of Gaza are carrying on, nor how the hostages and families are coping. I want nothing more than Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace side by side in a democratic two-state solution.

I am a secular Jew. I live in the UK. I am supposedly safe, as are my children.

But I don't feel like we will be safe much longer. Hamas wants the annihilation of all Jews, not just the destruction of the state of Israel. It's not about freeing Palestine to them. It is about eliminated an entire ethnicity. My ethnicity.

When Jews were targeted in the Holocaust, it didn't matter if they were religious, Orthodox, or secular. It didn't matter if they were in Poland or Germany or Russia. Jewish blood meant "evil".

Jewish ancestry is traceable. If Hamas gains further popularity in the Middle East (incredibly likely, given their links to Iran and Qatar), there is a real danger for literally every Jew in the world. I am seeing more and more Europeans and Americans leaning so far to the Palestinian side that they want Israel to stop being an accepted state. This gives so much more power to Hamas because any aid sent to Palestine is being spent on weapons and rockets being used against the Jews.

I'm sure I will be told I am overreacting. But I am scared. And I think I have every right to be.

I'm married to a Muslim man and it takes a lot of trust to tell people that as people have so many judgements about Muslim people.

So....they don't see women as second class citizens? How do you explain that, then?

Good Lord, what is wrong with you?

"They" are 1.8 billion people with a wide range of opinions on all sorts of things.

Teddleshon · 29/10/2023 21:49

@notsoready4school what is Israel supposed to do - sit back and wait for Hamas to kill more Jews?

Not exactly a minority then

Parkingt111 · 29/10/2023 21:54

@WibbleWobbleFlop I haven't read the full thread but I am very sorry to hear that you feel unsafe.
There are many who simply cannot distinguish between the Israeli government and its citizens let alone other Jewish people around the world.
I pray for a better world where all people can feel safe
I pray for a better world for all of our children

Radyward · 29/10/2023 21:55

Israel stops bombing gaza and all of a sudden the issues you are experiencing OP will for the most part go away. Its their daily atrocities egged on basically by the west thats the root cause of your fears. Its terrible. Its netanyahu not the supposed anti semites on here.
Its barbaric the continued onslaught which is breeding little hammas every minute this continues.id bet that poor child who lost all his family would die to revenge that. What planet is netanyahu on? What planet is ursula von der leyen on ?? Fgs she is risking all our security ! Its madness

Well yes, they are. 25% globally. 6.5% of England and Wales.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with how they may individually feel about the status of women and sweet fuck all to do with Jews.

WibbleWobbleFlop · 29/10/2023 21:59

@MumsDailyNap I am expressing the fact that I am worried my children will not continue to be safe due to their ethnicity, and you imply that I am comparing my fears to those of Palestinians being bombed? At no point have I said that my fears are equal. At no point have I forgotten those poor civilians living in horror.

I think you should take a hard look at how you have judged me and why you did.

@notsoready4school what is Israel supposed to do - sit back and wait for Hamas to kill more Jews?

They should ask rational advisers who are not taking action based on political and revenge motivating them (talking about something beginning with N..) and try and get Hamas using the intelligence and resources of their American friends to help them. The experience of their American friends here would also have helped them hugely if they weren’t acting out of political motives. A long war means a long time for the existing political person to stay in power.

they should also use the options available to them to at least try to get the hostages out alive. The fact they are hostages Hamas full well expected to use them and any rational non power hungry, politically motivated government would have at least tried to save them rather than bomb them as well.

At first it was anger and revenge that guided them but then it has clearly become self preservation (political) and ego. No thought for their hostages at all. Nor any clear plan of what comes next (except staying in power as the war is supposed to be long)

Parkingt111 · 29/10/2023 22:00

@WibbleWobbleFlop ok iv just read the last few posts and I'm sorry if people are giving you a hard time for something that has nothing to do with you
You seem like a lovely person

Echobelly · 29/10/2023 22:00

@FinallyFinalGirl - you could say the same of Orthodox Judaism but evidently that only matters to you when smearing Muslims as a whole.

@Roastedmeat - I do believe you meant well, this is why I prefer to try to educate people than cast aspertions unless I have reasons to believe they are acting in bad faith.

lostonmars · 29/10/2023 22:01

daytriptovulcan · 29/10/2023 14:45

If people wanted to stay in their homes, where they have been for generations, and if they wanted to resist being enthnic cleansed out of it and over to border, why would you find that somehow unreasonable? You expect the Palestinians to put up with it, when for example the English never would tolerate it.

Here we go. 🙄

None of that has anything to do with what OP actually said.

SomeCatFromJapan · 29/10/2023 22:02

So not only was the incident in Dagestan terrifying, but our fellow UK residents are enthusiastically endorsing it. And not just any residents - a journalist, someone with actualy influence.

Anti-semitism long pre dates Netanyahu and Hamas.

Ever heard of the Hebron Massacre, or Chelmitzki massacre, the pogroms in Russia in the ate nineteenth century? Blood Libels? Thats before you get to the Holocaust. Hey, I am only around because Poland in the 1920s was such an antisemitic place my family left.

The worst part actually is that there are many people in Israel who don't even agree with many of the actions of their government
This is disgusting
Imagine if we recieved hate all around the world for what our governments did

EsmaCannonball · 29/10/2023 22:07

The footage from Dagestan is terrifying. Dagestan is an actual colony and its people are currently being used as cannon fodder in the attempt to turn Ukraine back into a colony, but when Russia is the coloniser the 'everything Western is bad' people don't give a damn. Part of me would not be at all surprised if the Russians were directing that lynch mob because they really hate Israel and are really looking to stoke divisions at the moment.

Parkingt111 · 29/10/2023 22:08

Does anyone know what happened afterwards? Were they escorted out safely?

I haven't been able to find any follow-up information yet.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 29/10/2023 22:13

OP I think it is appalling that anti-Semitism is on the rise. Very sadly, and terrifyingly, it has been for a number of years. Have we learned nothing from history?

ticketstickets · 29/10/2023 22:13

So, in response to OP. I don't feel scared to be Jewish. I am visibly Jewish, Orthodox, and work in a Jewish space. Security is a HUGE concern for us right now but for me, its mostly to make other people feel safe. I personally think the risk of a dangerous attack upon me, or my workplace, are pretty low. Its amost certainly more dangerous for me to get in a car or cross the road.

I also think that hiding in my house is just another victory for anti semites.

I do understand why so many people are scared, it is a trauma response, people have seen their loved ones raped, murdered and kidnapped. The same way someone who has almost drowned or been in a car accident might be scared to go to a swimming pool or get in a car.

Where I live (not in the UK) the media is very very anti Israel. The Jewish community is pretty small and invisible and there have been almost no actual antisemitic attacks or incidents that I have heard of, except for people tearing down pictures of kidnapped hostages. (what?why?what is wrong with people???)

Teddleshon · 29/10/2023 22:14

The only way this stops is if Hamas surrenders and the attacks on Israel stop.

Kendodd · 29/10/2023 22:15

Unfortunately we do.
I know some Russians who got abuse when Putin invaded Ukraine and were expected to answer for him. I've traveled extensively around the middle east and had some abuse/felt nervous about being British, especilly when travelling with an American friend. I'm sure it's nothing like the level of racism minorities get here though.

HvalaALot · 29/10/2023 22:18

It is tragic that Jews be targeted for the actions of a government they didn’t elect or a policy they don’t endorse.

It is the same for Palestinians who didn’t elect Hamas, or who did because they were desperate and the non-violent path had given no results. No one should have to pay for the sins of others. It’s absolutely awful on all fronts.
