Scared to be Jewish

I am not pro-IDF or pro-Hamas, in fact I am very strongly against both. Netanyahu's government is an ultra-right wing aggressive shitshow and Hamas is an "elected" group of cowardly murdering terrorists. I am horrified for all Israeli and Palestinian civilians. I can't even begin to imagine how those poor innocent people of Gaza are carrying on, nor how the hostages and families are coping. I want nothing more than Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace side by side in a democratic two-state solution.

I am a secular Jew. I live in the UK. I am supposedly safe, as are my children.

But I don't feel like we will be safe much longer. Hamas wants the annihilation of all Jews, not just the destruction of the state of Israel. It's not about freeing Palestine to them. It is about eliminated an entire ethnicity. My ethnicity.

When Jews were targeted in the Holocaust, it didn't matter if they were religious, Orthodox, or secular. It didn't matter if they were in Poland or Germany or Russia. Jewish blood meant "evil".

Jewish ancestry is traceable. If Hamas gains further popularity in the Middle East (incredibly likely, given their links to Iran and Qatar), there is a real danger for literally every Jew in the world. I am seeing more and more Europeans and Americans leaning so far to the Palestinian side that they want Israel to stop being an accepted state. This gives so much more power to Hamas because any aid sent to Palestine is being spent on weapons and rockets being used against the Jews.

I'm sure I will be told I am overreacting. But I am scared. And I think I have every right to be.

The point is that this is a democratic right and people of all faiths and backgrounds joined together to stand up for a valid cause.
Alot of the criticism on the protest was towards the British governments response in not voting for a ceasefire

What happens with Hamas after a ceasefire? Do they stay in power

How do you ensure the atrocities on October 7th do not happen again

sunshinesupermum · 30/10/2023 17:29

Parking113 there will be no ceasefire before all the 229 hostages are released hopefully unharmed, but having seen the barbarity committed by Hamas on 7 October, I fear that is unlikely. The British Government is not going to move from that position and nor should it. Hamas broke the existing ceasefire by committing their atrocities three and a half weeks ago.

@sunshinesupermum i was not trying to debate the issue. Just stating that this was one of the points raised at the protest

Withdrawn at poster's request

You are one of the posters who is derailing this thread SeeReality.

This thread is not about Palestinians. It's about a Jewish mother in the UK feeling scared.

There are many threads about Palestinians. If that's not enough, start one.

Apologies to OP, as the thread is definitely is going in different direction to the intended one.
You are directly contributing to this thread going in a 'different direction'. Now that you have apologised and at least one of your posts has been deleted due to spreading misinformation that can incite hatred against Jews, will you stop derailing? An apology isn't worth much if you keep doing the very thing you apologised for.

Maybe the fact that it's under "Middle East Conflict" is confusing.
Are you easily confused? Because to me and many here this is not confusing, we are still responding in support of an OP who feels afraid and for good reason. Are you implying the OP ought to hide away in the Jewish section on MN? 😏

Yes there was a ceasefire which was broken by Hamas in the most atrocious and depraved way

I’m not sure what happens if ceasefire is granted. What happens to Hamas?

And the same threat continuing

I am going to ask to have this thread to stop accepting comments. I apologise to any fellow people who participated in the thread as intended. The disrespect from some posters has been too much for me to handle, and frankly, I am feeling more worried than ever.

I believe you will find the figure is less than a hundred
Nowhere near the several thousand you quote unless you have a source for that
These do not even account for 1% of the attendees
Anti semitism is not OK. And I'm glad these people are being arrested.

Sorry but so far since the marches started the police have arrested at the marches or after for their behaviour marches just under a hundred people. As we all can see not everyone is getting caught or arrested. The police have also only been arresting the people they can see starting a chant of 'death to Jews' or whatever else. Therefore the numbers of people involved is way higher than the number of arrests.

Sorry but in a crowd of 100k several thousand is a small but pretty accurate guess from all the videos of a sea of people chanting hate. This is a serious issue and the police have said it is a serious issue. Believe whatever you like though. That is the joy of having you own opinion.

At the fascist EDL marches a few years back led by 'Tommy Robinson', there were typically 1 or 2 arrests. Do you think that means that all of the other 'protestors' were not racists or inciting violence? Would you have felt comfortable around them as an immigrant or someone of a visibly 'other' ethnicity?

Edit: sorry, to clarify, I am agreeing with you @Trulywonderful

LovePaleGreen · 30/10/2023 17:40

@WibbleWobbleFlop We hear you! And we stand behind our Jewish communities, friends, co-workers, teachers, students, NHS workers and neighbours ❤

I was there in central London in Saturday HeidiInTheBigCity and heard them chanting 'death to the Jews' so stop minimalising the hatred for Jewish people on our streets please. I am pretty certain (seeing many young people) that they have no notion of history and what their chants lead to.
Incidentally I didn't hear anyone ask for the hostages to be released. Sorry OP but the thread has migrated to the Middle East again! Perhaps it would have been better under Jewish Mumsnetters rather than Talk xxx

Then I suggest you do what every decent person should do if they witnessed such a thing: report it to the police and contribute to those responsible being prosecuted.

But, with all due respect: I severely doubt that 100k people on the streets of London all shouting "death to Jews" would not have made the headlines! So I am going to have to go out on a limb and say "obligatory idiots" not the overwhelming majority (see above). And we must not allow a few idiots to undermine the rights of a massive number of people who are perfectly entitled to express their horror at unfolding events and their opposition to their government!

Again: do the right thing, get people actually shouting "death to Jews" prosecuted - and accept the fact that people will disagree with your opinions and have a right to say so!

I am typing this as I am listening to Bibi Netanyahu saying "this is a time for war", as well as some other really disturbing shit - again (his address in Hebrew, yesterday, was truly apocalyptic)! and: mostly because he fears for his own future and his legacy, NOT that of the hostages and their families, not ordinary Jewish people! - we have GOT TO be able to express our opposition to how unconditionally our government has been supporting this horrible, horrible man and his ultra-far-right government!

Prosecute people who actually shout "death to Jews!" - but the right to protest MUST be protected! Especially when our leaders dare to support such horrible people supposedly in our name!

We have GOT TO do better!

How would you deal with Hamas to ensure Israelis do not face the barbaric atrocities as on October 7th again?

yes this is what I was thinking. The marches have attracted bunch of ignorant thugs but they are almost certainly a minority (not that that makes it ok or not scary!). That woman with the Keep the Planet Clean banner made the news just because it was so outrageous. Hopefully sanity will indeed prevail.

LovePaleGreen · 30/10/2023 17:55

100k people are not shouting "death to Jews".

100k are not dissociating themselves from the brutes who are shouting "death to Jews" and 100K are happy to march with them shoulder to shoulder. Shameful.
