Scared to be Jewish

I am not pro-IDF or pro-Hamas, in fact I am very strongly against both. Netanyahu's government is an ultra-right wing aggressive shitshow and Hamas is an "elected" group of cowardly murdering terrorists. I am horrified for all Israeli and Palestinian civilians. I can't even begin to imagine how those poor innocent people of Gaza are carrying on, nor how the hostages and families are coping. I want nothing more than Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace side by side in a democratic two-state solution.

I am a secular Jew. I live in the UK. I am supposedly safe, as are my children.

But I don't feel like we will be safe much longer. Hamas wants the annihilation of all Jews, not just the destruction of the state of Israel. It's not about freeing Palestine to them. It is about eliminated an entire ethnicity. My ethnicity.

When Jews were targeted in the Holocaust, it didn't matter if they were religious, Orthodox, or secular. It didn't matter if they were in Poland or Germany or Russia. Jewish blood meant "evil".

Jewish ancestry is traceable. If Hamas gains further popularity in the Middle East (incredibly likely, given their links to Iran and Qatar), there is a real danger for literally every Jew in the world. I am seeing more and more Europeans and Americans leaning so far to the Palestinian side that they want Israel to stop being an accepted state. This gives so much more power to Hamas because any aid sent to Palestine is being spent on weapons and rockets being used against the Jews.

I'm sure I will be told I am overreacting. But I am scared. And I think I have every right to be.

I'm sorry you feel scared op. I'm sorry for everyone who feels scared because of this conflict, especially the people caught up in it, i can't imagine their fear. Its horrendous.
I didn't think we'd see this fear amongst jews again, its horrendous this is happening. My dad was in ww2 and sometimes spoke of it. Dhs dad was in it too and was amongst the first British soldiers to liberate Belsen...it never ever left him. The thought that people would feel fear again just for being themselves terrifies me. We don't seem to learn from history.

@Alohapotato there will always be someone in a worse positions. Again I wasn't trolling OP, my point was there are innocent children being murdered surely that should be the top of our priorities to stop this happening.

@Roastedmeat - I can see you're be supportive, but be aware talking about the 'Jewish lobby' tends to be used in an antisemitic kind of way, and especially saying they're 'super powerful and influential' is also a bit of an AS trope. Yes, it is good for us that the community has a strong voice that, most importantly, institutions of power in this country respect, but one needs to take care discussing it's own 'power and influence' because that could get read the wrong way. Also not all Jews agree with Jewish leading voices because, hey, we're Jews and we're like that.

Yes funny sort of “privilege” when Israel has so many enemies who are dedicated to its elimination and the murder of all Jews along with having faced incessant attacks from its nearest neighbour. No other country faces this.

@JSMill I can understand you feeling like that and having to be sure you can trust people first. It's also like trying to avoid a fight or flight scenario. I've been in situations where I've told my DH (who's Irish Catholic) to categorically not mention I'm Jewish just to avoid any potential drama. He totally gets it, but it's exhausting.

You sound like the sort of person who says "but ALL lives matter" when someone says that Black lives matter.

You should not be afraid of Hamas. Israel will get them even if they have to kill every child in Gaza.

unfortunately the actions of Israel have however made the world a lot more dangerous in the west as it will increase the likelihood of terrorist attacks by other terrorist organisations (not named Hamas)

it is scary how despite knowing this having experienced this the west is facilitating this outcome and not speaking up for these people who will suffer, see their family starve, be nombre etc be traumatised, have no jobs, homes or family and nothing to lose and then be radicalised. It will only take a few/few relatives of them who remain to get groomed into the next generation of angry terrorists.

All of us living in the west countries which have supported Israel through this terrible outcome will likely be targets.
