Scared to be Jewish

I am not pro-IDF or pro-Hamas, in fact I am very strongly against both. Netanyahu's government is an ultra-right wing aggressive shitshow and Hamas is an "elected" group of cowardly murdering terrorists. I am horrified for all Israeli and Palestinian civilians. I can't even begin to imagine how those poor innocent people of Gaza are carrying on, nor how the hostages and families are coping. I want nothing more than Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace side by side in a democratic two-state solution.

I am a secular Jew. I live in the UK. I am supposedly safe, as are my children.

But I don't feel like we will be safe much longer. Hamas wants the annihilation of all Jews, not just the destruction of the state of Israel. It's not about freeing Palestine to them. It is about eliminated an entire ethnicity. My ethnicity.

When Jews were targeted in the Holocaust, it didn't matter if they were religious, Orthodox, or secular. It didn't matter if they were in Poland or Germany or Russia. Jewish blood meant "evil".

Jewish ancestry is traceable. If Hamas gains further popularity in the Middle East (incredibly likely, given their links to Iran and Qatar), there is a real danger for literally every Jew in the world. I am seeing more and more Europeans and Americans leaning so far to the Palestinian side that they want Israel to stop being an accepted state. This gives so much more power to Hamas because any aid sent to Palestine is being spent on weapons and rockets being used against the Jews.

I'm sure I will be told I am overreacting. But I am scared. And I think I have every right to be.

@LolaSmiles - yes, that's very much how I feel as well. You can't bomb your way to peace. If the Palestinians had peace and prosperity they would tell warmongers like Hamas where to go, but only Israel can grant that by giving them a homeland.

I totally agree @EasternStandard , it’s amazing that calls for jihad and intifada are tolerated on London streets in broad daylight particularly after Manchester Arena, London Bridge and 7/7 and other atrocities.

Part of me thinks that it is a good thing that we are seeing and hearing this as these people are telling us who they are and what they stand for.

Personally I think the Hamas atrocities are going to represent a turning point in the longer term. It’s interesting that large employers such as Blackrock are finally standing up to these idiots at top universities for their unequivocal condemnation of Israel. There was a chant at NYU of “we can’t wait for the caliphate” 😱

@Echobelly They were given the Gaza Strip, yes it’s tiny but prime waterfront land. Hamas have continually rejected the two state solution.

Not only that but there were celebrations and various pro palestinian publications with headlines like 'rejoice!'. In tge immediate aftermath here was a tiny Jewish vigil for the dead and kidnapped attended mostly by jews. Where were the 'both sides' peace campaigners?

I'm hoping that some of the people marching with Pro Palestinian flags understand what their hatred means.
I too support a two state solution.

Hamas and the Palestinians refused the offer of a 2 state solution.

I would no sooner march alongside these people than I would march in solidarity with ultra Orthodox Jews or evangelical Christians. I just don’t share their values particularly in relation to gay and women’s rights.

I'm not sure I understand why Free Palestine posts are constantly mentioning Gazan children dying as if Gazan women, men, the elderly didn't count. It's not very nice as if some deaths are worse than others, it's ageist and unkind. It would be interesting to run a word count across all the posts on this topic to see how many times dead children and babies have been mentioned in Free Palestine posts.
