Stop this insanity

This has to stop. No debates about which side is right or wrong. Come on people no one with any shred of humanity can surely say what is happening in Gaza right now is ok under ANY justification. I’m absolutely heartbroken to see the world just watching and doing nothing. And getting angrier by the day. I’m in Ireland and thank god our government is calling for what’s right. But they are not doing enough. No one is. There is no politics or background or religion or any moral reason on this planet that makes what’s happening ok. If you think so I think that’s appalling. Each individual needs to do something to say NO to this slaughter, aside from what beliefs you hold about who the ‘good and bad guys’ are.

Oh how lovely that the best you can do is be “whimsical” about the horror befalling innocent civilians tonight.

well I suppose it just doesn’t mean enough to you for you to be serious.

Ignore him
He made his feelings on palestinians quite clear last night. And it wasn't pleasant how he views them

Namedmyself · 27/10/2023 21:21

@SomeCatFromJapan so what about the Palestinian civilian deaths- most of them children?

Where is the flag for them and all the other unjust deaths caused by wars

Daftmum47 · 27/10/2023 21:36

That projection was done in solidarity to Israeli civilians who had just suffered an appalling mass atrocity.

As a politician with access to the highest calibre information and intelligence, he should have given more thought to the decades-long mistreatment of Palestinians, caused by the settlement agreed by the British state and the zionists in the Balfour Declaration; and also the likely reaction of Netanyahu, who was a known quantity.

He rashly made himself a hostage to future outcomes and placed this country on the side of a warmongering colonial state, that’s now committing the most horrific war crimes as we type.

You're right, that is an entirely unrelated note, and it sounds like quite an unpleasant insinuation.

Daftmum47 · 27/10/2023 21:53

No, I have just been trying to get my head round various metrics, as well as the history, as a means to understand what’s going on.

Eg: Israel, smaller than the Scottish Highlands; Gaza the same size of the Isle of Jura.

16 - 18 million Jews or part-Jews world wide, 7 million of whom are in Israel, and a slightly smaller number in the US.

How can such a small country, smaller than the Scottish highlands, bring about WW3?

It is your insinuation that is unpleasant @SomeCatFromJapan and I deplore that.

ChickHenLittle · 27/10/2023 21:54

Yes, the actions of the Israeli government are barbaric. Indefensible. It is the government of Israel and the IDF who deserve condemnation, not Jews.

Yes agreed

Has it occurred to you that you're being rather unpleasant by entirely discounting the role of Hamas/Gazans in the current conflict?

That really wasn't the issue with the post I'm question.

CluelessPadme · 27/10/2023 23:13

On a practical note @Zzbutton what are you asking people here on Mumsnet to do? What is your action plan to stop this insanity? If there’s something particular you’re asking for it would help if you could be specific; most people here are of course aware and sympathetic

Zzbutton · 27/10/2023 23:19

@CluelessPadme for a start let our governments know any way we can by protests, letters, emails and the internet that we do not support what is happening. Let our voices be heard by whatever means we personally have access to.

Serbia has a smaller population than that yet a gunshot from one of its nationalists brought about WW1.

Amazing what a single nudge can do when enough dominos are arranged just so.

" Hundreds of people were arrested when police broke up a large demonstration of mostly Jewish New Yorkers who had taken over the main hall of Grand Central station in protest of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, police and organisers said.
The New York Police Department said at least 200 people had been arrested, while protest organisers put the number at more than 300, Agence France-Presse reports.
Photos from the scene showed long lines of young people standing in handcuffs and wearing black sweatshirts with the words “Not in our name” and “Cease fire now” printed in white.
NYPD officers arrest protesters in Grand Central Station, New York City.
The sit-in was called by the group Jewish Voice for Peace-New York City, which said thousands of its members had attended the protest, blocking the main concourse of the city’s central rail station.
Pictures showed the terminal packed with protesters who held up banners reading “Palestinians should be free” and “Mourn the dead, fight like hell for the living”.
Thousands of Jews and allies at the sit-in calling for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire.
Organisers called the peaceful sit-in “the largest civil disobedience New York City has seen in 20 years”.
Rabbis launched the event by lighting Shabbat candles and reciting the Jewish prayer for the dead, known as the kaddish. "

I read what you wrote, perhaps you should too. If you don't appreciate me deploying the same passive aggressive approach back at you then maybe you shouldn't be using it.

Israel have choices and are a democratically elected government, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect higher standards from them that I do terrorists. Expecting more of Hamas would be pointless.

Edited

It wasn’t passive aggressive. It was genuinely pointing out that you seemed to be arguing Israel should not counter attack. And you confirmed that you were saying that in a subsequent post.

It’s perfectly normal in debates to point out to people where their arguments actually lead.

You clearly have not honestly read what I said if you have interpreted ( distorted) my statement that I don’t know what the solution is but that I object to Hamas not being held to any responsibility for the ensuing death and destruction, as me supporting said death and destruction. That’s clearly an entirely unsupported, to put it politely, conclusion to draw of what I said.

thedevilsgift · 28/10/2023 09:10

FOJN · 27/10/2023 20:26

They were about to normalise relations with Saudi. Hamas were determined to stop that, it's worked. With the exception of Iran and it's proxies all the Arab nations initially condemned Hamas. Israel had them all on side. Erdogan offered to be an intermediary in negotiations and now he's describing Hamas as mujahideen! The situation in Gaza is losing Israel support.

The difference is that Israel was previously operating under the belief that they could co-exist with Hamas. On Oct 7th Hamas have shown quite categorically that the Israeli government were wrong. That’s quite the game changer.

In previous posts you seem to be arguing that Israel’s priority should be to garner public sympathy. Here you seem to think words of condemnation should be Israel’s goal. But words of sympathy or condemnation will not keep Israel safe.

I have no idea what will.

" The US ended up looking quite badly isolated when only 12 countries joined Washington and Israel at the UN general assembly in opposing a motion call for a sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities. One hour after Israel had extended its offensive in Gaza, Jordan’s motion was passed in New York by 120 to 14 with 45 countries abstaining.
The outcome was remarkable for showing the limited direct support for the world’s greatest superpower, with even France, Spain and UK refusing to join Washington in voting against the motion. "

The picture that Sunak tweeted of the huge Israeli flag projected on not Downing Street now makes me sick.

That projection was done in solidarity to Israeli civilians who had just suffered an appalling mass atrocity.

Quite.

I refuse to lose sight of one side that is suffering. The appalling suffering and death to civilians in Israel and Palestine is appalling. To feel sickened by an show of solidarity and sympathy to the citizen’s of a country that suffered such appalling and deliberate depravity is, well I’m genuinely lost for words. There had been no counter attack then. There was just an appalling terrorist attack.
The level of dehumanization of ‘one side’ by being sickened by an empathetic display in the immediate aftermath of a terrorist, depraved attack, that is something I refuse to do and will never condone.

What? Guns against STONES? I'm disgusted, in the truest sense of the word, that this is being allowed to happen. Shame on Sunak and Biden mot only for allowing this to happen, but for actively supporting it. Shameful.

The IDF have traditionally used live ammunition against stone throwers - the stone throwers have been children as young 5. Reports can be found back in 2015.

I believe it had eased up a bit recently but they’ve resumed. The sky report show’s teenagers but generally it tends to be young primary age school kids because obviously all the teenagers are in prison.

Israel-Hamas war: As protesters throwing stones are shot by Israeli snipers, this is part of 'normal' life for the West Bank

In the West Bank in the past week and a half alone, over 60 people have been shot dead by Israeli marksmen, and more than 1,300 have been wounded; it's barely reported.

Do you think people in NYC would be hacked to pieces if they showed they were against Hamas

I didn't see any celebration...?

You didn't mention that in your post either, you seemed to think people would be "hacked to pieces". I haven't heard of any injuries at any of the vigils held in the UK for the victims of the Hamas attack.
