TTC for first baby thread !

Hello - I thought I’d start a TTC thread specifically for those of us who are trying for our first babies. I’ve joined other threads before but find it difficult connecting to others who may already have babies as I think ttc for your first is a whole other ball game as no other children and first time.

Any others? 🩷

For those who are at the referral stage sorry I can’t fully remember who has said what in the thread but I agree it wildly varies from each ICB.

Our experience was that we got referred from the GP to gynae first. Our GP had barely completed any investigations (they were beyond useless) so we had to do all that. Before we were ‘allowed’ a fertility referral we needed 2x semen analysis (cos the first showed male factor so they wanted to check it wasn’t a fluke), day 3 and day 21 blood tests and AMH, we both had to confirm no STIs, up to date smear, internal scan and a hycosy to check tubes were unblocked.

Then depending on the result of all that the gynae will make a suggestion like maybe they will suggest ovulation medication or IUI as a starting point but for us we got referred for ICSI.

The main wait for us was the hycosy (16 weeks ended up being 20 in the end) and then the referral from the gynae to our fertility clinic and initial appointment think we waited about 4/5 weeks.

Like I said though this is for Leeds, each ICB is different and have different processes so I would call up the gynae and ask for the process so you have peace of mind - the GPs literally know nothing. The whole thing is so frustrating but when you’re finally with the clinic it all moves quite fast (or at least in our case it did I think because we are quite a bog standard case).

If you’re thinking you’re about to embark on any process I would highly recommend listening to the IVF BFF podcast and the BFN podcast. Both super informative and funny.

Thank you so much @Jadjaz this was such a helpful and informative post!!! I feel a bit clearer about the process now. Honestly no one has told us anything, you’re just left in the dark with it all which I think is so bad for anxiety when it comes to fertility and trying for a baby.

You’re so welcome. The anxiety is awful and the waiting is brutal there have been many tears over the last year for me but now I have a whole new set of anxieties to contend with yey!

I think I saw you post somewhere you’re down south. My scenario (and I think why we had to jump through the gynae hoop) is because our clinic is private and takes NHs funded patients so they wanted to know the ‘full picture’ beforehand so we didn’t interfere with private patients - suppose they only have a limited amount of slots.

So if you’re looking into a private clinic who takes NHS funded patients I would maybe ask them what do you need to have ‘completed beforehand’ before they will accept a referral and how long the waitlist is for NHs patients so you don’t face any delays. For anything you might not have had done you could always then look at seeing how much it would cost privately (we did one of the SAs privately because the waiting list was laughable) x.x

I might message you privately if ok!

I’ve just finished watching All Her Fault on Sky which I enjoyed! Now watching Not That Into You s2

I’ve seen All Her Fault is good!! I’m just watching Parenthood on Netflix. Apparently it was on TV but I didn’t see it then, so catching up! Very addictive

Brunch123 · 14/11/2025 22:09

@cobalt123 was wondering how you were getting on since our cycles seem to be very similar!

Been asked today by my SIL when we’re having children, I never know what to say! I just said probably next year! What are people saying to family and friends about TTC, if anything?

GladDenimGoose · 15/11/2025 10:13

Period due tomorrow and tested BFN this morning so I think I'm out. Feeling pretty disheartened 😞

Marvelftw · 15/11/2025 10:20

Sorry to hear that @GladDenimGoose How many cycles have you been trying?

cobalt123 · 15/11/2025 11:19

@Brunch123hey! Yeh are you heading into the tww now too then?

stupidly im symptom spotting already 😂

People don’t ask me the when are you having kids question anymore 😂. I’m nearly 40 and was in an another very long term relationship that didn’t work out about 4 years ago. They used to ask me before that relationship ended without knowing he was a complete commitment phobe. I’ve now finally met the one but we’ve not been together that long. I don’t think people would assume we would be trying to have kids so soon or also perhaps don’t want to ask in case it’s too late and we can’t etc etc. So the pressure is off externally. We both really want kids though and thought better not to delay too long given our age.

GladDenimGoose · 15/11/2025 11:53

@Marvelftw this was only our third cycle so I also feel guilty for being sad as I know a lot of people try for much longer

Marvelftw · 15/11/2025 12:10

@GladDenimGoose still early days :)

Brunch123 · 15/11/2025 12:49

@cobalt123 I’ve not ovulated yet think I will tomorrow!
it’s so hard isn’t it to not symptom spot!! The TWW just seems to go on forever aswell!
That’s good the pressure is off from other people though - it’s just the pressure we put on ourselves to manage!

LittleRedB · 15/11/2025 12:59

Hey! I'm in my first month TTC and have been overly obsessed over the last week post "expected" ovulation according to Flo and PreMom.
My ovulation was either 6 or 7 days ago and I've been negative testing with the boots strips yesterday.

I think I'm reading way too much into it as I've previously been pregnant unexpectedly when I was younger and sadly wasn't in a position to keep. I'm 28 now, had my copper IUD removed on the 1st November, so just a waiting game!

I was really out of breath yesterday which caught me off guard as I've not experienced that before but again could be anything!

Any suggestions for making the time go quicker? AF is due in 8 days (Sunday 23rd)

SunshineRose12 · 16/11/2025 08:41

Morning ladies,
sorry for the radio silence from me, but just trying to keep my head out of total TTC obsession! Just finished my fertile week (at least I think it was based on my very non scientific tracking of my discharge - sorry TMI!). My cycles are all over the place, but going going to try and wait till 1 December, and if no period by then, I’ll test 😬

I’m finding this very hard, as there are quite a few things I wouldn’t do whilst pregnant, so I feel like I can’t plan anything at the moment. Meant to be going on a spa day next week, but was panicking about committing - just in case - I was pregnant. Husband has talked me into going, as I really do want to go, but I can’t help worrying about what if….

Only parents know we’re trying to conceive, they are too polite to ask about it, but I can see everyone paying attention whenever I’m offered a glass of wine 😂

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend

jw97 · 17/11/2025 07:30

I’m almost at the end of the tww and have a very faint line on my easy@home tests…praying it progresses 🤞 AF due today/tomorrow but absolutely no sign so far 😬

@Brunch123I sometimes get asked by people who apparently don’t know better, and since we got married in the summer and I’m 28, I just brush it off with saying something about how we’d probably like to have them but we just got married so kind of still just enjoying this stage! They stop asking then. My husband seems to get asked a lot more by friends/acquaintances than I do. Wish people wouldn’t

GladDenimGoose · 17/11/2025 10:25

AF came yesterday (painfully as well) so going into cycle 4 now. I'm away with work for a couple of nights right in the middle of my fertile period so might take it easy this month.

@jw97 a faint line is promising! I hope it progresses ok for you!

Sorry that this month isn’t the one, and that AF is particularly bad. It’s frustrating when work schedules get in the way too when it’s such a small window!
Thank you, fingers crossed for you too 🤞🏼

Brunch123 · 17/11/2025 12:27

I don’t think I have ovulated this month so think I’m out already! I’ve never ovulated this late before and not noticed any EWCM like I usually do so think it’s more likely I won’t! It should make the 2WW easier though going in with no expectations!

@jw97 how exciting!! Are you testing again tomorrow?

Maybe a break for one month won’t do any harm, might even help by taking the pressure off.

Yes I’m going to see how the line progresses and then end of this week do a digital test - they are expensive so don’t want to waste too early!😂

Brunch123 · 17/11/2025 16:46

@jw97 well I did say that I wanted to take a break this month, so it’s taken it out of my hands I guess so your right will probably do me good!
I am keeping all the fingers and toes crossed for you, lovely having a positive in this thread!

We put so much pressure on ourselves and other people don’t help!

Thank you so much! Fingers crossed! I will update ☺️

rrrrrreatt · 18/11/2025 10:59

My period came yesterday so we’ve not conceived this month. I’m still getting nauseous, never became ill so no idea what’s causing it!

I’ve got a routine GP appointment today and have accidentally booked on the same day as the baby clinic. Probably not what I needed today, the waiting room’s full of cute babies and toddlers!

HopefulK · 18/11/2025 14:52

Af due tomorrow for me and definitely feels like it’s coming so I’m out. Got a little bit of brown spotting too which I sometimes get the day before. I’ve read this can be due to low progesterone but when I had my day 21 test my progesterone was 95 which is super high so never sure about that 🧐

jw97 · 19/11/2025 07:30

I got my BFP this morning🥹 did 2 separate clear blue tests to be sure 😅 fingers crossed for everyone on this thread!! 🤍
