Tips on how to not test before missed period

I tested early on my two pregnancies before and had two successful pregnancies then I had an early miscarriage and a chemical miscarriage last year and I was trying my hardest not to test early because of the heartbreak I experienced from the last two times. I’ve been trying this month and hoping I get a positive next month but I don’t know how I am going to stop myself from testing early, I worry so much after having the miscarriages anyone else finding it hard not to test so early x

Thanks, I'll get some today! Need to go for DSs vitamins anyway x

EMC2022 · 18/05/2025 10:05

Congratulations @Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate. That's test looked plenty dark enough given neither of those tests are designed to pick up early pregnancy and are used from period onwards!

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 18/05/2025 10:30

Ah thank you @EMC2022! Just been and got the boots ones, so have 4 different ones for tomorrow, including one digital! X

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 18/05/2025 18:40

Well, didn't need the extra tests, just started bleeding 😞

LaTable · 18/05/2025 18:47

Nooooo! Ugh, big bleed or hopeful implantation?
I'm so sorry @Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate, that's absolute shit

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 18/05/2025 18:52

No, big red bleed! At least we know we both work still, even if it hasn't stuck this time!

LaTable · 18/05/2025 18:56

I meam silver linings, not that it's much comfort when you're going through it.
how long had you been ttc?
I'm so sad for you, it really is horrible to go through any early miscarriage

ClearUP · 18/05/2025 19:00

Missed the quote.

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 18/05/2025 19:01

No, it isn't. I've had a CP before, back in 2023 and the hormones afterwards weren't great! Hopefully this time it's not too bad as I think this is a little earlier. After the one in 2023 we stopped trying, until January this year we decided we wanted to start again. So I know not long!

Thinking about testing and how it has changed overtime. I feel it was so much easier and less stressful in my day!

No option to test that early. This came with the benefit that we had no idea of chemical or early miscarriage, so so much less heartache.
I was so surprised and also worried when my DiL announced she was 1 day pregnant, so relieved it all turned out.

We also didn't let anyone know about a pregnancy until 12 weeks and certainly didn't buy anything for the baby as that would be tempting fate.

Lack of early testing also meant less tracking too. Just waiting for symptoms. I was so busy and unfocused that when I did test and go to the GP I was 20 weeks pregnant!

That was delightful, a safe, viable and very short pregnancy.

curliegirlie · 18/05/2025 19:54

I am so sorry to read your update @Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate 🥺

It's a tricky question whether we're "better off" with or without the tests as sensitive as they are nowadays. Whilst they lead to heartbreak when things go wrong, they also give hope that things can go right. Without early testing I wouldn't have known about 2 of the pregnancies I had in the last three years (one early MC of indeterminate date - I guess before 5 weeks, 1 CP when I was just a day late), and might not have known about the most recent one I lost at 6 weeks. So I would have thought it was 3 years of absolutely nothing, which I think would have felt even more helpless and grim. And knowing about losses mean that things can be done that help, e.g. proscribing progesterone etc.

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 18/05/2025 20:03

Oh yes, I'd rather know! I'd missed my period, it should have arrived anywhere between Weds and Fri, and I tested Saturday with the positive. Well, it's a new cycle now. I'd rather it happen now, too, than further down the line. I hadn't told anyone, except shown my husband the faint lines!

LaTable · 18/05/2025 20:45

I think as much as good as "saving heartache" is, there is so much more that benefits it.
Like @curliegirlie said, people are now perscribed medications that help get and keep pregnant that otherwise would have been told they couldn't have children all thanks to knowing they have had multiple mcs and not just late/irregular periods
There are also so many tests that are newer and more used these days for early detection of abnormalities that can be treated, given information for prep post birth or in the unfortunatecases of tfmr, there are treatments for those who suffer with issues within the first trimester and onwards (thinking hg, low iron ect)
So ye, as stressful and sad as it is knowing about chemicals and early mc that "could have been" I'd absolutely want to know for sure and not just wonder for the rest of my life "was that just an odd heavy period with a weird lump in it or was that actually my baby I passed and can mourn?"
Also to be honest, it just gives me more appreciation for my children who did make it.
Pregnancy is a freaking miracle and I wouldn't want to take away from that just because we only ever knew about the pregnancies that made it. I think that is half the reason why is so heartbreaking these days - because it was seen as easy and simple for those who didn't know any better

Aaannnyyyyway, yes @Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate I totally understand where you're coming from qith the at least you're on to the next cycle. It's bitter sweet but like we said with @curliegirlie, perhaps it won't take long if you continue straight away to get a bfp?
How is hubby taking it?

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 18/05/2025 20:59

I feel blessed to have my little lad, I know some people don't get that chance so I'm fortunate. Would just love to give him a sibling!

Hubby has been liking things on Instagram from when we announced DSs pregnancy and gender, so I think he may be a little bothered, even though he wouldn't say it. But he's obviously gone back to find the posts.

EMC2022 · 19/05/2025 21:15

@Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate I'm so sorry. A CP can bring a bit of heartache for what "should have been". Hope you and your DH are doing okay.

curliegirlie · 20/05/2025 07:55

I think all your well wishes may have had an effect! 10dpo today (and so much darker than yesterday's! I was absolutely convinced it was a particularly stark indent!)

Your positive outlook on a new cycle is so nice to hear @Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate

All good with me and little one, I can feel it wiggling more and more lately, but still got 6 long weeks until my 20 (22) week scan.
Told the kids the other week and they are actually so thrilled about it which shocked me from my eldest!
Also, bloat has now gone fully and I'm starting to feel a slight swelling/start of a bump. I guess the 6 years between successful pregnancies reset my uterus in is expanding capacity because its like I'm expecting my 1st all over again. Haha

How are you and your little bump getting along? @Laria19

Laria19 · 20/05/2025 17:10

All good here 😊 6 and a half weeks until my anatomy scan. Ah my belly has definitely popped maybe because I’ve had my kids close in age so I show quicker 😅 @LaTable
