Tips on how to not test before missed period

I tested early on my two pregnancies before and had two successful pregnancies then I had an early miscarriage and a chemical miscarriage last year and I was trying my hardest not to test early because of the heartbreak I experienced from the last two times. I’ve been trying this month and hoping I get a positive next month but I don’t know how I am going to stop myself from testing early, I worry so much after having the miscarriages anyone else finding it hard not to test so early x

Well I gave in and tested the evening before my period was due - negative. However that was Tuesday and it’s now Thursday and I’m now a day late. I’ve tested three times and I’m negative on them all but I’m never, ever late - my periods are incredibly regular. I’m also feeling really quite pregnant, which would be so cruel if I’m not.

The last time this happened was October and I finally tested positive two days late. That pregnancy lasted a month or two. At the time I did wonder if the late positive was indicative of a pregnancy that never quite got going properly … But I’m second guessing myself a bit now. I’ve never tracked ovulation in my life so I don’t know if I have a 14 day luteal phase or not. I’m also in my late thirties and and I have read that the luteal phase can get shorter as you get into perimenopause. So basically, I am just confusing myself completely but I suppose it’s just possible that I could test positive eventually and it’s possible that wouldn’t necessarily be a bad sign.

Saying you're never ever late is just like begging for your period to just be late 🤣

How are things for you @Laria19 ?
@curlygirly ?

Monday afternoon for me! You've got a few weeks still, correct?
I've got about a 6 hour round trip with the two girls tomorrow to see family that are in the country so that will keep be busy.

Absolutely feeling the morning sickness now, almost threw up today trying to eat soup that I was so looking forward to 😅 apparently all I can stomach is cake and sweets so that going to be great for my waistline 🙈🙈🙈

How is everybody else?
And bfp's or has af turned up?

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 22/03/2025 18:13

I had a negative on Thursday (8dpo ish) and this morning (10 ish) so wondering if I'm out. TMI, but we did BD when I had EWCM (which was present about a week after AF), and apparently due on 26th... sorry, I'm thinking out loud really trying not to discount myself too much 🤣

LaTable · 22/03/2025 18:57

@Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate never out until af turns up!
I personally love the thinking out loud, it's all a helpful distraction 🤣

EMC2022 · 22/03/2025 21:08

All negative here too at 9dpo. I have been so nauseous today so was so sure that might be a sign as I rarely feel nauseous in general.

I will test tomorrow again. My previous 2 pregnancies I had fairly obvious BFP at 10dpo so I think I will have given up slight hope if negative tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about the morning sickness @LaTable. And glad to hear all is going well with you too @Laria19.

Hopefully we see some BFP soon in the group.

Thistimearound · 23/03/2025 06:40

I‘m now 4 days late. Last tested (negative) on Friday morning. I guess I have no idea when I ovulated.

Laria19 · 23/03/2025 09:50

@LaTable Yes my app is just over a week away. Aww sorry to hear about the sickness I haven’t been to bad just going the toilet a lot and very tired 🥱

Thanks, trying to keep this in mind! I know I'm lucky that my DC was conceived first time, and my CP in 2023 was too, so doubting I could be so lucky again this time round! Glad all is well with you 😊 x

EMC2022 · 23/03/2025 17:11

@LaTable negative again with FMU unfortunately. Also that was the last early response test i had so probably won't be able to test again until Tues/Wed. Probably better off, then I would have a finite result 😂

The one thing I like about testing early is my hope slowly dwindles each day and by the time AF comes I'm in an acceptance stage so feeling positive again that we just go again if it didn't work out this month.

Thistimearound · 23/03/2025 18:43

I’ve never been late without being pregnant. Tested again this morning - negative yet again.

Honestly, I have no clue. I’m late 30s and worried I just started too late … also pregnancy and miscarriage that took up about 3 months a few months ago may have stolen a few months that I needed. I suppose time will tell.. at the moment I’m just hoping for a period and to start a new cycle.

curliegirlie · 23/03/2025 22:00

Sorry for being AWOL. Still feeling very raw...and now testing OPKs like a madwoman. I just want to get back to where I was, at the same time feeling that my chances are miniscule 😩. I usually ovulate CD15 or 16 but at the moment the OPKs are as negative as you can get. Which possibly means my ovulation day is going to hit midweek or something when we're knackered. I don't know what to expect from this cycle. My BFN came a week after the MC, which was a lot sooner than last time. Last time that first post-MC cycle was 30 days and I have no idea whether I ovulated or not, as I bought the OPKs late into the cycle. But maybe, as I tested negative sooner I might have a better chance of a more normal cycle this time round 🤷‍♀️.

LaTable · 24/03/2025 02:04

Those negatives are such a bummer. But at least you're all still on with a shot if af hasn't turned up.

@EMC2022 silver lining for testing early I suppose! But I'm still routing for you.

@Thistimearound do you normally use opks? I think even though you're late 30s you're absolutely still in the game. There are tons just trying for their first in late 30s!
How old is your son?

@curlygirlie absolutely no need to apologise, sounds like we've all been through at least a cp so we all get needing to take time.
It's so hard grieving the loss while simultaneously ttc too.
Testing negative so soon after is surely a good sign!
Hopefully any day now with those opks. Mine normally go from eff all to positive without warning, maybe the mc will throw a curve ball like that?

Also envy all you ladies with cycles under 30 days 😅😅 I'm a 32-38 day kind of girl and it makes ttc torture haha

EMC2022 · 24/03/2025 06:53

@LaTable I totally agree. I was a lovely 28 days after having my DS (was 35 days before him). I stayed at the lovely 28 days for 2 years and just as we started TTC they started lengthening out again.

After the CP I am currently on CD35 and AF isn't due till CD39. I feel like I should be getting to try again right now, rather than still waiting for AF 😂

curliegirlie · 24/03/2025 11:20

@LaTable I used to have horrendously irregular cycles a decade ago and even after starting Levothyroxine they were over 30 days long. It's just been this past 3 years that they've been more usually 28 or 29 days long, so another reason why it's frustrating that it took so long. But yes, I definitely remember the days of jealousy over people's standard two week wait when I was taking forever to ovulate! My longest cycle pre-Levothyroxine was 146 days!

My OPKs also tend to go up and down very quickly nowadays- it means I basically regard anything PreMom puts much above 0.2 a peak! It's rare that I catch it go above 0.5!

LaTable · 24/03/2025 12:14

I disregard all numbers on premom otherwise I would never have gotten a peak 😅

Jeeze, 148 days is what, shy of 5 months? That's mad! That's pcos or endo related surely? Or just whacked hormones 🙈
At least they are (touch wood) more regular now!

curliegirlie · 24/03/2025 14:03

It was an underactive thyroid. Because of that MIA period I went to the GP before the 12 month mark and they did the day 21 test, which showed my TSH - thyroid stimulating hormone - level was 6 (then 12 a week or so later; needs to be below 2.5 for TTC). Once I started on Levothyroxine my cycles got a lot more sensible!

LaTable · 24/03/2025 16:25

Soooo I had my scan. Saw and heart a little hb. But also now spotting so it has not reduced my anxiety in the slightest but at least now I've got a billion prescriptions for bloods and scans and such gaaahhh

curliegirlie · 24/03/2025 18:32

Ahh, good news about the heartbeat. Try not to panic about the spotting. Is it light? What colour is it?
