People falling pregnant first month!?

I feel like this is more common than we're led to believe

Among my friends, all late 20s early 30s, about 9 of them conceived first month and 3 others month 2 after saying they think they hadn't time their ovulation dates right. So, accounting for the ovulation dating mistake, it's really still the first 'proper' try.

My best friend also just fell pregnant first month. She feels unprepared, said she was expecting it to take 6 months or so, as that's what lots of relatives told her, so she started trying earlier to account for that.

It can be deflating if you're the only one that's been trying for a while!

I fell pregnant on the first proper try, and I mean 'proper try' as in tracking my cycle correctly and not guessing. I find it difficult to tell if I'm in the mood or not as I don't have the highest libido, so tracking works for me. I unfortunately miscarried that one very early. I've been pregnant about 4 more times with natural attempts and IVF ICSI and none have stuck around. It'll be 2 years once February comes around and I turned 36 four days ago. It's a lottery really.

I agree with the lottery analogy. I don’t think it’s fair what a PP said about healthy people conceiving quickly. There are a lot of very healthy people doing all the right things and not conceiving for extended periods. Equally many people with poor diet and lifestyle choices who get pregnant unintentionally. Life is not fair!

Who knows the truth OP. People exaggerate or might not count the months before actively trying. Took me ten months to conceive my second, four to conceive the first.

I got pregnant the first month with both my first and second pregnancy. My daughter we had sex twice the first month and bam I was pregnant. With my son we had sex once first month and bam I was pregnant again, even though I was still breastfeeding. We were really shocked.

I fell pregnant both times I tried on the first try. Everyone is different, there are a million factors at play. I think it's possible that it is more common as you said, but a lot of women won't necessarily make it known because other women struggle to conceive and don't want to be seen as bragging or being insensitive.

@CurlyWurly1991 sorry if I caused offence, I meant healthy from a reproductive POV (so no endo, PCOS, low sperm count etc).

Happened to us. Was so prepared with plans for monitoring ovulation etc then shocked it happened straight away. It was twins but sadly miscarried at 8 weeks. Conceived again after 4 months.

I'm another one who'd been told my fertility wasn't great so was a bit careless and got pregnant. Meanwhile of 2 friends with the same condition one took 5 rounds of IVF and the other took surgery. It's so unpredictable.

I fell pregnant on the first month 5 out of 6 times aged 36, 37, 38, 40 and 41. Staying that way was more difficult though. I’m grateful it didn’t take a long time to conceive.

Among my friends it’s all the way along the spectrum, from first month ttc to several years.

@NervyBee i guess that’s where the term ‘unexplained infertility’ comes in. Lots of people struggle to conceive or maintain a pregnancy without an identified cause despite all of those conditions being ruled out. NHS advice is it is ‘normal’ for couples to take 1 or 2 years to conceive so while I agree that there are many who do conceive first try, and of course unintentionally including on the pill etc, for those that don’t there isn’t always a clear reason beyond simple luck of the draw.

It took me 7 months, this pregnancy ended in miscarriage and I fell pregnant the first month following

After 10 years infertility, one late mc at 22 weeks I literally looked at the moon decided I was ovulating and got pregnant first try - on that occasion. Baby is almost 4!

Sometimes it happens first time, some times it takes forever. Sometimes after taking forever it happens first time.

First month for me at 34 with PCOS no regular cycle, having been told previously that I would need intervention to get pregnant and to come back when I wanted to have a baby. Got married, came off the pill so I could give my body a break before going to the doctor, properly trying etc. I wasn't tracking anything other than period dates.
Didn't even realise I read pregnant until ten weeks, because I just didn't believe it would happen.
I was happy but taken aback we had a big adventure holiday planned for when now DS would be a month old! My SIL came off the pill at the same time (wanted to wait until after our wedding) and DN is two weeks younger than DS.
I don't know if it's true but someone told me that if you've been on the pill, the first month off is more likely due to hormone surges? That may well just be a myth....

I think there is some truth to there being increased fertility after coming off the pill. After my failed transfer, my nurse recommended that I track a few days earlier in the first natural try after the failed FET as sometimes just having those extra hormones in your system can kick things into a higher gear for some women. So I tested from CD11. It didn't happen like that for me that time and my ovulation occurred around the normal time for me.

I had a horrible month after stopping the pill and I’m sure I didn’t even ovulate as I was so all over the place. Nothing the month after that despite lots of sex at the right time. Following month hardly had sex at all at the right time because I was away with work on and off a lot. I was convinced it wouldn’t happen that month but felt a bit funny on a work trip in the lead up to my period being due. Did a test on the day my period was due and got a strong positive almost immediately. My poor partner was in bed after coming off night shift because I thought it would be negative again! I’m 35 so was very surprised.

My mum got pregnant with me first month at 33. My partners mum was trying for years before getting lucky at 30. One friend pregnant first month at 40, another friend second month at 35 but a couple of others were over 6 months trying and under 30. I’ve got friends who have had to go through IVF in their 20s too due to unexplained infertility.

A few people I know who fell pregnant 'first month' are talking about when they started tracking ovulation etc - they were having unprotected sex before this though.

I fell pregnant literally the first month coming off the pill, didn't expect it at all.

  • Just wanted some opinions I am ttc I normally have regular periods 28 day cycle they are always very heavy & very painful this month I got sore boobs quite earlier than I normally do before period and also my who breast was sore it’s normally just underneath on the 12th of Nov I had sudden brown spotting my period is due the 22nd of November it then stopped after a few days 2/3 I then had brown spotting on the 21st & very sharp pains in ovary area but not tummy pains which are normally extreme then today on the 22nd I would still call it spotting but more redder than brown now my boobs are tiny but sure but not as & haven’t been for a few days what’s your thoughts x

dc2 first month
dc 3 first month

but I thought that was rare, I know a lot of people who took 6 months to a few years and about 3 months seems normal in my friendship group

I was very lucky to conceive first month for my babies. I was 38 when my youngest was born.

I've seen a bunch of people on here be catty and rude to anyone who brings up that it took them hardly any time to conceive. They get accused of bragging and intentionally trying to hurt women who struggle.

Might be a part of why women who conceive quickly don't tend to talk about it.

With my first two I conceived instantly - with the third it actually took a month!

We used to say that my late OH only had to smile at me and we would get out the baby clothes. We were very lucky - but it did of course cause its own problems as we had to go for belt and braces when it came to contraception.

If there’s no known fertility issues then it really is the luck of the draw for most people. A woman’s chance of conceiving is about 20% each month- which is why in medicine they mention statistics based on a woman’s chance of getting pregnant within a 12 month period. Some will get pregnant on the 1st month and others on the 12th (or longer), it doesn’t necessarily mean one is more fertile than the other.
