People falling pregnant first month!?

I feel like this is more common than we're led to believe

Among my friends, all late 20s early 30s, about 9 of them conceived first month and 3 others month 2 after saying they think they hadn't time their ovulation dates right. So, accounting for the ovulation dating mistake, it's really still the first 'proper' try.

My best friend also just fell pregnant first month. She feels unprepared, said she was expecting it to take 6 months or so, as that's what lots of relatives told her, so she started trying earlier to account for that.

It can be deflating if you're the only one that's been trying for a while!

I should also say, he’s very much loved and wanted. Just a bit of a surprise!

Subsequent pregnancies were also first month eye off the ball babies.

BecauseTheWorld · 22/11/2023 15:28

I did both times whilst every other woman in my family had issues with conception and miscarriage. We’d actually banked on it taking years not a month 🤨

Colinswheels · 22/11/2023 15:34

My first was a surprise after having unprotected sex with my DH once aged 30, wasn't trying but it was a happy accident. Then I suffered secondary infertility and eventually got pregnant a second time via donor IVF so I've experienced both sides.

Three pregnancies here. 33, 35, 38 ish

first month, third month, first month.

I didn’t expect the last time to take one month. I actually cried from the shock 😆(Trying for second baby but third pregnancy.) I never felt ready in the 3 years of having our first to try again and thought well it’ll take ages so it’s now or never. I was mentally prepared it’d take 6-12 months cus of my age. I swore that I was perimenopausal, actually. Was convinced my hormones were all over the shop for various reasons (random short cycles, mood etc).

Can’t complain though, of course! Got used to the idea pretty fast.

14 months and not even a hint of a second line 🫠🙃

Hoping to be referred to the fertility clinic for further investigations soon but that will be at least a year wait.. likely more..

Have friends who conceived without trying and are constantly asking us when we'll be having a baby and another friend who has a child and pregnant again who winges about being pregnant constantly.

Slowly losing the will to live 🙃🤣

NervyBee · 22/11/2023 16:18

Ah, sorry to those who have miscarried and those of us who are still ttc 🩷

Yes, I really do think in the majority of healthy people, it happens very quickly. I have endometriosis which is complicating things.

Yes to PPs saying they were in shock and there's no support for conceiving much quicker than expected! Very true. I do think people (old relatives imo) tend to exaggerate the need to try earlier, as it seems months of ttc are normally caused by health problems and majority of people can afford to leave it longer.

Yes, a lot of people may not tell the truth. A colleague announced her pregnancy at work today and over lunch told me the baby was a happy accident and they hadn't been trying! I suppose most babies are accidents, so this conception must be easy for most people eh 🥲

@TheGoddessFreyja the 'when are you having a baby' questions are just the worst! Hope you and your partner get seen by fertility clinic soon and all goes well xx

Thank you lovely. I think until you actually TTC and its been months those types of sayings are so insensitive. now I've been through it I can hand on heart say that would never be uttered out of my mouth to anyone.

I just don't think people think. We are taught as soon as you have unprotected sex you will get pregnant, but not taught about infertility and the small window and chance that it can actually happen. I read something the other day and apparently its only like a 20% chance each cycle.. but how come so many people fall pregnant first try then? 🤣

Hope all goes well for you too sweets. We will get our darling little babies eventually, it will make it all the sweeter when it happens 🥰🩷 lots of love to you xx

Echobelly · 22/11/2023 16:39

I do think there's a tendency to 'over problematise' conception. I hear about some women absolutely jumping through hoops to 'improve their chance of conceiving' when it really doesn't seem necessary.

In my case I conceived oldest literally first attempt. 2nd took 4-5 months I think as it seemed to be a while before my cycle normalised after coming off the pill that time.

LimeOrangeLemon · 22/11/2023 16:44

Based purely on observation, not data, I feel like lots of couples get pregnant quickly, and some couples struggle, and there aren't so many in between. So the 6 months quoted in your OP may be the average, but the average doesn't actually apply to many people - most are either much quicker or much slower and the two extremes balance each other out. Disclaimer: this may be complete nonsense!

SwordToFlamethrower · 22/11/2023 16:50

My second child was conceived 2 weeks after I had my implant removed, as in, from removal to positive test was two weeks.

Third child was 6 years and 6 rounds of ivf.

NinNinJin · 22/11/2023 16:50

I got pregnant first month. And had a miscarriage at 11 weeks. Didn't help much.

TripleDaisySummer · 22/11/2023 16:53

First took 5 months which felt like forever - second we had sex twice DH was out country for next couple of months so know when I conceived.

I've read on here a GP would never comment on potential fertility problems but I had one who did and told me due to menstrual issues I had I would likely have issues conceiving - led to us deciding to try few years earlier than ideal just in case we did encounter issues we'd have time on our side. Also made me anxious to try sooner for second - DH was humoring trying at all then as knew he'd be away as we didn't think it would happen that fast.

So second pg happening straight away did show we had no issues - which did mean we were more relaxed trying for third - which I think took two or three months.

Isitisit · 22/11/2023 16:54

I got pregnant first month, had a miscarriage.

A year later and not a hint of a bfp since.

MummyMumMumMummy · 22/11/2023 16:55

Out of all of my friends and family, only my SIL got pregnant on the first try, with both children too.

it took 7 months of ovulation tracking for me to get pregnant at 21, and again another 7 months of ovulation tracking at 24.
it took my closest friend over 12 months, and my other friend around 4 months.

TripleDaisySummer · 22/11/2023 16:55

I think as it seemed to be a while before my cycle normalised after coming off the pill that time.

I do wonder if that why first took slightly longer - I'd come off pill that I hadn't been keen to go on but was all that GP was offering for menstrual issues I had.

gotomomo · 22/11/2023 16:59

I got pregnant by accident the first time and the first month the second, I think it just a "it depends " situation

Haydug · 22/11/2023 17:01

I did fall pregnant first time. I was using ovulation testing so I knew when I was ovulating. It did surprise me as the chance is supposed to be so slim each time. We thought it would take at least 3 months, as that's supposedly common.

rainbowtea23 · 22/11/2023 17:06

I’ve been both sides. First took 9 years to conceive and I thought it was a one off and I’d never have another one. DC2 first try. Shocked was an understatement.

Crzy · 22/11/2023 17:12

Happened to me too, although tried for 2 years in a previous relationship with no luck other than a few mc! Got pregnant first month off pill but sadly miscarried, much to my surprise I fell pregnant again less than 2 weeks after and am now nearly 32 weeks Grin definitely do think it’s commonly assumed it’ll take ages and to start trying earlier than you want baby as it won’t be instant whereas for some it definitely is. Do think I was suddenly very fertile after coming off pill tho

user1483387154 · 22/11/2023 17:19

I got pregnant 3 days after coming off the pill. I had expected it to take months as was 39 years old and had low egg reserve.

Same here, fell pregnant in the first month of trying with both my babies. I credit the ovulation strips. For my second baby, we even only had sex once that cycle and it did the trick thanks to the ovulation strips helping us time it properly.

Felt mildly bad for my husband - I get incredibly low libido postpartum. He was excited when I said I wanted to try for another baby so soon after the first one, as he thought it would lead to more action. ''Twas not to be! 🤣

Kittylala · 22/11/2023 17:20

I've always used an app so I know when exactly which days I'm fertile. First go age 34 and second age 39.

MoonIightDreamer · 22/11/2023 17:28

Lucky them. Its taken me 18 years and ivf to fall pregnant

CurlyWurly1991 · 22/11/2023 18:03

theres no way of knowing until you try. some people struggle to conceive their first then second onwards happens much sooner. here we conceived first try with the first, second has taken 6 months so far. clearly the main difference is that we are older.
