Thanks for the lovely welcome hester. I was diagnosed with pco after a year of trying to get pg with no luck. So then did the clomid route for about a year with no luck. Then did pergonal for about 3 cycles with no luck. Had 2 failed cycles of IVF and just gave up after that.

My marriage then failed and it was with a new partner (also now an ex) that I had my dd (she's now 5, btw). I remember being really ill and being told it was bowel colic and IBS before someone testing to see if I was pg. I was absolutely shocked when I got them news. I then had to tell my partner that I was pg after telling him when we first got together that I probably couldn't have kids. I made an appointment to see my gp and asked how it had happened after everything I'd been through and he said to me that "sometimes certain tissue types are just incompatible". Not sure I believe him but something worked. So you're right, there is a lot that is still unknown about fertility.

Not sure I'd do IVF again but would consider clomid if it comes to that. Just trying not to get too stressed out about trying but as you can see, it's only my first month and already I know what day I'm on and am thinking about when I can test.

hester · 30/12/2004 16:53

I used to work in fertility clinics (in non-clinical roles) and I remember that 'incompatibility' was a commonly-cited cause of couples not getting pg. Often they could and did get pg with other people, just couldn't with each other. My friend and her dh had a whole load of problems that made them look a very poor prospect indeed on paper, but put them together and they seemed to overcome it. Maybe they just had two miraculous pieces of luck, or maybe they're actually more fertile than they'd look to a doctor, but fertility is as fertility does, isn't it? There are plenty of women out there who are quite subfertile but have got lucky a couple of times and so assume nothing's wrong - and in a way, there isn't. Ditto women whose fertility is quite good but have just been unlucky...

Oh lord, I'm rambling. Sparkly, you will soon learn that I write incredibly long posts and they're rarely worth reading all the way through! I think the point I was leading up to is just to wish you good luck and hope that you and your current dp have great compatibility.

There are a few women on this thread who have been ttc for a long while (me among them), and others who have PCOS and other fertility challenges. We understand all about the perils of going crazy-obsessive, and we will try to keep you calm with lots of wine and chocolate!

Ooh, and fastasleep - that was me with the shoes! And jedds! Aintcha jealous? Aintcha, aintcha? You may have youth on your side but we have the footwear!

BeckiF · 30/12/2004 17:00

Incompatability sounds awful scary doesn't it? Hope that's not our case, I couldn't bear another obstacle in the way.

hester · 30/12/2004 17:08

There's a test they can do to test the compatibility between your cm and his sperm, Becki - they put them together under a microscope and watch how they get on! There's probably a more scientific explanation but that's pretty much it.

sparkly · 30/12/2004 17:55

Wine and chocolate sounds good to me. Having a few girlfriends over tonight for that very thing -plus pasta - just to prove I can cook.

I agree beckif that incompatibility is not a nice thought. That said, the whole time I was with my husband and we were trying it was never mentioned, it was only when I did get pg and questioned why that I got that explanation.

As for obsessing about the signs - my back had the unmistakable twinge today that means my period is about 10 days away so not that hopeful despite frequent efforts. But, that said, when I was pg with my dd I did have what I thought was a period hence the dr not testing me.

For those of you who have been trying for a long time, I can totally understand. I spent years and years like that. In some ways I feel bad being on here given I've been lucky to have my dd. I can remember all too well the feelings when someone I knew got pg - it was horrible. So if I go on too much tell me to shutup!

Canadianmom · 30/12/2004 19:18

Welcome sparkly! I doubt that you will ever be told to shut-up as we all have our own issues and can ramble endlessly. This seems to be the place to be heard without being judged. With all the great advice and support we should have you on an anti-natal thread before you know it!
Hester: Glad the tricky timing worked out for you! Feeling envious about the shopping but I need to avoid the shops or I will empty the accounts and we can't eat shoes.
Looks as though many of you will be testing as I am looking for that 'O'. I love reading about other successes so lets hope the Christmas baby dust is still flying.

munnzieb · 30/12/2004 19:35

BeckiF · 30/12/2004 20:30

Why, why, WHY did I take a test today (7dpo apparently) and then get upset that it was a BFN .... I just can't help setting myself up for these upsets. I'm still not sure if I HAVE ovulated although FF says I have (for the 2nd time this cycle)

marinda · 30/12/2004 21:17

Hi Becki

Sorry about the test, I know how S* you must be feeling as I have done the same many times !
Read this book today by Robert Winston (of child of our time fame)and he sheds much dobt on timing of ovulation kits. He says the chance of pg is greatly increased if you bd dance 15+ time a month at least once a day in fertile period. I think i have really been doing it all wrong as I have waiting for big "o" to appear and apparently if you do this it is easy to miss as the tests can be very inaccutate. He sys to work out approximate time and then bd as much as you can. I think I shall be altering my bd habits in the light of this ! May not be useful to you I don't know.

Thanks Hester , Jeddah for your support - sometimes I just feel I should give up - but I take what you said about Sept/Oct birthdays Hester- makes mw feel more positive !!

CD4 for me so not much excitement - but I have a short cycle - so will be bd like mad soon - hope my DH can take it!

Tania2 · 30/12/2004 22:02

pooka · 30/12/2004 22:37

Right. This is a wierd one. Took pregnancy test day before Christmas Eve. BFN.
Still no AF (Day 34 of approx 35 day cycle, so yes, the other one was much too early). Just taken HPC because have thrush and canestan cannot be used when pregnant or TTC. And have a very very very faint 2nd line. It is visible to the naked eye, mine and DH's. Whsat's going on? It is alot lighter. Hardly a BFP but.......
Anyone got any advice. Should I use different tests in the morning (used first response, but have clearblue but no pee left ).

pooka · 30/12/2004 23:05

OK. Am now thinking that I've completely imagined it and am probably being really stupid. Will post when have done more tests, but am trying not to get too excited.

sparkly · 31/12/2004 09:24

Tania2, I just don't think I could cope with IVF again. It was too invasive and I just remember barely coping with everything at the time. I think it's great and I know people who it has worked for but I don't think I could put myself through all that again. I say that now but who knows if I don't conceive in the next year I may change my mind. Good luck to you.

pooka · 31/12/2004 09:25

Well. Tried Clearblue and a big cross appeared in the window.
How shocked am I? Very!
Still feel quite strange as is so early on. Fingers crossed though for a September (virgo - eek) baby and babydust to everyone posting.

sparkly · 31/12/2004 09:25

pooka - have you tested again? Fingers crossed for you.

sparkly · 31/12/2004 09:26

pooka - posts crossed! Congratulations!!!! That's wonderful news! My dd is a September baby - works well being the oldest in the class!

pooka · 31/12/2004 10:01

Thanks Sparkly! Everyone in mine and DH's family is born in June, July, December or January, so an autumn baby would be a novelty.

morningpaper · 31/12/2004 10:04

AF here today. But at least it's on time - better than having a late cycle and getting all worked up.

Feeling pretty miserable though.

jeddah · 31/12/2004 10:31

Morning paper...keep going girl with your head down! it will be our turn soon!

Pooka what lovely news to end the year with, I am so pleased and A LITTLE BIT JELOUS!

BeckiF · 31/12/2004 11:28

Congrats Pooka

jeddah · 31/12/2004 11:52

hiya beckif how are you feeling today?

pooka · 31/12/2004 12:17

Thanks all
Still feeling pretty doubtful about it all, so will be lurking on this thread for a fair while I imagine, and hope to hear good news for you all in 2005. Good luck everyone

Fastasleep · 31/12/2004 13:16

Not here for long but! Pooka! Blimey, this is the luckiest thread in the world! Well done!!
